She is seen as one who is well educated, The play has a variety of characters with the main ones being Vivian Bearing who reflects on the toll cancer treatment takes on her and significant events in her life. Dr. Jason Posner who is a fellow clinician, Dr. Kelekian who is an oncologist leading research scientist and Susie Monahan, a nurse who advocates for Vivian’s condition.

In the beginning of the play Dr. Kelekian, , informs Dr. Bearing that she has a terminal case of ovarian cancer with his recommendation, Bearing decides to pursue an experimental treatment, one that won’t save her life, but one that will further scientific knowledge. Persuaded by her love of knowledge, she agrees to the painful large dosage of chemotherapy. This clearly show autonomy in her part, which is defined as having the freedom to make choices about issues that affect one’s life (xxxxxxx). She is fully aware of the side effects the ancer treatment, the length of chemotherapy treatment (8 months), and signing the informed consent should she agree to the proposed treatment as illustrated by Dr. Kelekian in their conversation in the beginning of the play (11). Being ill and hospitalization puts Vivian in a position of inferiority, stripping her of the personal and professional status she had in her earlier years. This is evident in the play in her conversation with the x-ray technician. In this scene even though she can still walk without assistance, she is carried from one test to another in a wheelchair.

Throughout the play it is evident that she is confined to one room, she is isolated later due to her compromised immune system, which is in contrast to her former freedom as a student, a teacher, and a scholar. Her autonomy, her dignity are reduced to complying with the many tests and procedures required by the doctors as evident on the scene where Susie has an order for an ultrasound test done due to concerns of bowel obstruction. Vivian wishes to have the test done later but Susie is adamant to get the test done now which clearly show restriction to her autonomy to make the decision. (pgs. 6 – 20). Later in the play autonomy is clearly illustrated as Susie the nurse note that Vivians illness is getting worse due to expected side effects of chemotherapy and as Vivian’s advocate she decides to inquire from Vivian what her wishes would be should her heart stop. They discuss status as a full code or a do not resuscitate. Susie makes the choices clear noting that doctors prefer the former because “they … always want to know more things. ” Vivian’s immediate response is “I always want to know more things” (68), but this is followed by her decision against resuscitation.
