Increasing Penalties for Criminals Term Paper

In today’s society, community members have tried to implement numerous ways of reducing crime rates. Even though the community is fully engaging in activities aimed at reducing crime rates, the rates of crimes may be on the increase if any of the implemented programs are not effective. The most critical point is to understand the underlying issues. For instance, if people employ a certain prevention strategy based on reliable data from police reports or investigation, then society may be able to implement a reliable crime prevention program that can bring social change. One of the most reliable crime prevention programs is the increased penalty. Increasing penalties or having a more severe penalty, such as capital punishment can deter many criminals from committing a crime. By providing such a form of punishment, helps to deter other potential criminals who would want to engage in similar behavior. Generally, increasing penalties help in fighting crime in that, it discourages others who may want to engage in similar activity. The concept of deterrence can be classified into two major categories namely, specific and general deterrence (Roszak, 2000). Specific deterrence emphasizes the individual in question (Roszak, 2000). The main aim of specific deterrence is to discourage the criminal in question from future criminal activity by making such a person understand the consequences involved (Roszak, 2000). On the other hand, general deterrence also known as indirect deterrence puts much emphasis on general crime prevention criteria by making examples of specific deviants (Roszak, 2000). The criminal in question receives a punishment not being the focus of the behavioral change, but rather he/she is being punished for the sake of the public. In this case, the criminal is punished to deter the society members (public) from getting involved in similar activities in the future (Roszak, 2000). The most common example of general deterrence is death punishment. For instance, in a society where an individual commits a certain crime (like rape), and the consequence is the death penalty, then all community members will be fear the consequences. In such a case, this form of punishment will deter other community members (public) from committing such a crime in the future. Providing death punishment is increased punishment.
