Assignment: Essay #3 Critical Thinking writing prompt: 8-10 pages (no less than 8 full typed pages MLA format)

In this essay you will ‘think outside the box’ by reversing the ‘monster’ perspective. You will consider the ‘creature’ NOT as the monster but Victor Frankenstein as the true monster in this novel. You will become a ‘lawyer’ to defend the creature (this is your “role”). Your essay needs to convince the ‘judge and jury’ (your professor) of Victor’s guilt (being the TRUE monster) and the creature as an unwilling VICTIM of his creator (Victor).

You need to focus on two parts: 1) defending the creature (your client) against Victor’s victimization of his creation; and 2) focus on placing the burden of guilt on Victor being the true monster. You must find all the evidence from the text elements (character, traits, background, events, ‘witness’ statements, etc.) to support your final summation argument. You must prove by convincing the judge and jury that your client (although not an innocent) is a victim of Victor AND prove by convincing the judge and jury that Victor is the true monster. Explain your reasoning with evidence from the text. You can ONLY gather evidence from the text (no outside sources).

Remember your role when writing the essay. This is different from the other essays: you will use first person if you choose to be the lawyer when writing. You will use third person if you prefer to be a ‘courtroom journalist’ and not the actual lawyer. If you choose to be the reporter, the essay does not change any aspects of the prompt because you are ‘reporting’ the lawyer’s final summation argument. The only difference is that you will write in the third person not the first person. Do NOT give me a book report or an essay that does not touch on the role of a courtroom summation (final/closing argument). This is a fun project, but still critical thinking and formality is needed.

NOTE: you do not need to use present tense as you are playing a role in a courtroom that discusses the events that have already passed. Therefore, you must write in the past when discussing evidence. When discussing motives or stating who is what (monster or victim), then use the present tense as they are (supposedly) in the courtroom at this time in front of you! Do NOT go with the ending of the novel that Victor is not in the courtroom (he is!).

The Risk Paper must be based upon an article that you find in the newspaper, a magazine, or from any reliable source from the internet. The article must be attached or the link must be listed on the cover sheet.
