Theoretical Perspectives and Deviant Groups

* Conflict Theories say that definitions of deviance are devised by the powerful to repress and exploit the powerless or underclass.* Differential Association/Neutralization focus on the social and psychological processes by which deviant behavior is learned, internalized, and transmitted. This exercise allows you the opportunity to demonstrate how much you know about each of the above perspectives!    Instructions:1. Find someone you know (an informant) that engages in behavior, activity, or lifestyle that is generally considered to be deviant by the predominant norms of society and culture; i.e., illegal drug users, nudists, gays and lesbians, prostitutes, members of religious cults, Hell’s Angels, Ku Klux Klan members, and so on. Please be advised that in the event you know of no one legally “deviant”, any stigmatized individual will suffice (i.e., the obese, the alcoholic). For COVID-19 safety reasons, you should conduct phone interviews, NOT in-person interviews. I realize that there are some methodological shortcomings in using this form of interview, but our current times dictate that we do so!2. Make a list of questions that you might ask from the point of view of each of the perspectives. There must be a minimum of nine questions total; three each from the three theoretical viewpoints under investigation. For example, using anomie theory you might want to ask, “What are the goals and values of the members of the group?” AND/OR “Do you accept or reject the dominant culture’s values and goals regarding a particular behavior?”There are a great many questions that you can develop using each theory as a basis. Take great care in devising your questions because it will determine the types of things you look for in your research. (IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be certain when writing up your assignment to indicate which questions correspond to which theoretical perspective. In other words, defend why a particular question fits the theoretical    perspective at hand.) If a concept fits with a particular theorist, then state this as such!Upon interview, obtain as much information about the group’s norms, values, and beliefs as possible. Try to see the situation from the point of view of someone who is a member of the group (remember “role-taking?”). Your goal is to try and determine what it is like to the members of that group to be in that group. Be sure to take detailed notes about what your respondent shares.3. In your summary, discuss which sociological theory (theories) of deviance you think are the most relevant for understanding your group and why.

Application of Restorative Justice to Juvenile and Adult Crimes

Have you ever learned about a sentence given for a specific crime and questioned whether it would propel the offender further into a life of crime rather than rehabilitate him or her? If so, you are not alone. There is a significant “decarceration” movement in the United States that aims to end mass incarceration, particularly for those offenders who have committed nonviolent crimes. Using a restorative justice approach is one viable alternative to incarceration and other harsh punishments.
For this Assignment, you identify a local crime committed by a juvenile and a local crime committed by an adult for which a punitive approach was used. Then you consider how a restorative justice approach could have been more effective instead.
Write a 1,500-word paper that includes the following:
Juvenile Justice System (500 words)
Identify one well-publicized crime committed by a juvenile in your community for which a restorative justice approach would have been more appropriate than the punitive approach that was used. Explain why.
Explain how you would apply a restorative justice approach to the case. Be sure to include the following:Strategies to ensure that the offender provides accountability to the victim and the community
Programs and services to rehabilitate the offender

Adult Justice System (500 words)
Identify one well-publicized crime committed by an adult in your community for which a restorative justice approach would have been more appropriate than the punitive approach that was used. Explain why.
Explain how you would apply a restorative justice approach to the case. Be sure to include the following:Strategies to ensure that the offender provides accountability to the victim and the community
Programs and services to rehabilitate the offender

Conclusion (500 words)
Describe challenges you would encounter when implementing a restorative justice approach in the juvenile and adult cases you addressed. Then explain how you would overcome the challenges.
Explain the degree to which the application of a restorative justice approach is similar or different in the juvenile and adult justice systems.
Explain the benefits of restorative justice in the juvenile and adult cases compared to the punitive approach that was used.
Be sure to reference the course readings to support your responses.

This is the link of the ebook version: https://www.vianolavie.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/388/2019/02/INNOVATORS-by-Walter-Isaacson-Tulane-Copy.pdf Throughout the semester, students will read 1 chapter of the book, The Innovators Chapter 11 ( The Web), and write one paper for this chapter. The paper should be single-spaced, 2-page (excluding cover page and references), and typed in Times New Roman in font size 12. The paper should have a title, and consists of at least two sections: 1) A brief narrative of how an IS/IT (Information system and Information Technology) is realized, initiated, designed, and implemented in terms of what/when/where/how this happened, and key character players involved in the series of events. And, 2) Aha! Moment: Key observations/lessons/implications you have learned from the reading from the perspective of business IS. 1. Please keep a balance of the two sections: Half to half: Story Summary vs. Aha! Moment. For the second section of the paper, we are trying our best to stick with the stories and characters and dig deeper at the following aspects to make the reading relevant to the real IS business world, • Observations/lessons/implications you have learned from the reading can be further enhanced by the appropriate resources (e.g., the textbook materials). • You may want to provide some explanations of the concepts, practice, and theories of business IS using any other resources. • Observations/lessons/implications you have learned from the reading should integrate personal observations and experience, and business cases to illustrate the contexts, content, and/or technical configurations. • The plain easy business language will be strongly preferred to explain concepts, practice, and theories of business IS that is understandable to IT professionals and business users
