The validity of Thucydides’ arguments in explaining the actions of Athens in the war Essay

The History compiled by Thucydides as the former Athenian general who was accused of losing some of the battles and exiled from his native country remains the main source of historical records on the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens accompanied with their allies. Though the manner of the presentation the historical data by Thucydides is affected by his Athenian background, his attempts to make his works objective allow the modern historians to evaluate the validity of the arguments provided by the various sides in the Mutilenian debate and the Melian dialogue regardless of the author’s personal views of them. The Mytilenian debate taking place in Athens in 427 BC was focused on choosing the punishment for the revolt in the city-state of Mytilene located on the island of Lesbos. The two contradicting argumentation lines discussed by Thucydides were presented by Cleon who insisted on putting all the Mytilenian adult male population to death and Diodotus who claimed that it would be unwise and offered softer measures (Freeman 1999, 206). Though the Diodotus’ offer was supported by the Athenians, the final remark made by Thucydides concerning the Mytilenians’ escape demonstrates that the historian did not entirely agree with the final solution (Thucydides 2011, 10). Regardless of Thucydides’ claim that his representation of the historical data was unbiased due to his exile, certain moment in his works unveil his prior involvement into the events and a definite position concerning the Athens choices and implemented war strategies. The historian provides a detailed description of the Cleon’s argumentation line (Bolotin 1987, 22). The main arguments outlined by Cleon included the criticism of the debate in general which resulted in the delay of the punishment for the revolt. Moreover, this speaker claimed that the minor procrastination was to the benefit of the guilty party (Thucydides 2011, 6). Another Cleon’s argument concerned the underlying causes of the Mytilenian revolt. Cleon noted that it was not even a revolt but rather planned aggression which had to be punished respectively (Freeman 1999, 206). Cleon continued that the soft punishment of the Mytilenian population will result in negative implications from the side of the rest of the Athenians’ allies. Cleon’s argument was that the failure to punish the planned and aggressive revolt can cause the growth of revolts in other allies which would not be afraid to doubt the authority of Athens. In general, summing Cleon’s major arguments up, it can be stated that the speaker’s main claim is that the death penalty is the only possible punishment for the revolt of the ally (Bury

Module 1 – SLPNATIONAL RESPONSE FRAMEWORK (NRF) AND NATIONAL INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (NIMS)NATIONAL RESPONSE FRAMEWORK (NRF)NATIONAL INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (NIMS) GeneralThe intent of SLPs 1-4 is for you to implement the topics and materials learnt in the course to a “real life” scenario relating to a terrorist attack on U.S. soil in a major city sports arena. Each module’s Session Long Project builds upon the other, so you will add the modular sections within one document like chapters in a book. You will prepare your “plan” to address your own selected city’s characteristics and capabilities (e.g., if you are from California, you can present a plan for the Staples Center Sports Arena, Dodger Stadium, or the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles; or if you are from the Oakland/San Francisco area, the 49ers’ Stadium in San Jose or The Raiders Stadium Complex in Oakland).Follow the general scenario and additional information and updates provided in each Module.YOU are the Emergency Manager (EM) for your City (of choice) and from this capacity and role you will address the SLP tasks.Scenario General Description Date – August 1, yyyyThe Threat – Intelligence agencies have intercepted (from a credible source) a terrorist organization’s communication regarding a general coordinated plan to use improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to detonate bombs at a major USA city’s sports arena during an event at an arena holding about 10,000 spectators:Three to five suicide bombers strategically pre-position themselves around the arena. They detonate their bombs and self-destruct in order to guarantee mass panic and chaotic evacuation of the arena. One or two large vehicle bombs (LVB) are placed in a parking facility near the entertainment complex. Finally, expecting mass casualties, the adversary agents will detonate an additional series of devices in the lobby of the nearest hospital emergency room (ER).Timeline – The communication states only a general timeline for the attack to be executed within the month of September. No specific date is identified.Planning ConsiderationsKey Implications – Casualties (about 100 fatalities and 500 serious injuries) will result at all incident sites and will include civilians, emergency personnel, and the suicide bombers. The LVB detonation outside the venue will result in the largest number of fatalities and injuries due to the population density expected.NOTE – Life in the city will not be disrupted and all planned public events are not to be cancelled at this time.Module 1 SLP – NRF/NIMS – Assignment (You are the City EM)Choose a city and venue. Profile the venue including number of people it will hold, who owns it, and who provides security and traffic control during events (Private Security or Local Law Enforcement). Use the venue’s web-site as a reference.Include your venue’s schedule of events for the selected month (at least one per week).Profile the closest hospital, including Trauma Level, number of beds, who owns the hospital, and who provides security for the facility. If the closest hospital is not a Level I Trauma Center, do the same profiling for the closest hospital that is a Level I Trauma Center.Present maps/charts and photos of the locale, venue, and nearest hospital(s).Using your selected city/county websites, profile the Law Enforcement Agencies responsible for responding to the venue and selected hospital(s). Do the same for Fire Departments and EMS services. Describe or list the special response teams each agency has – SWAT, Bomb Squads, Tactical EMS, etc.Based on the NRF Guiding Principles—(a) engaged partnership; (b) tiered response; (c) scalable, flexible, and adaptable operational capabilities; (d) unity of effort through unified command; and (e) readiness to act—describe and summarize how you would prepare for such an incident at the state/city level. Use the following NIMS Cycle to describe your preparedness activities for both the venue and hospital, as well as the local response agencies (see Point out the priorities in your plan.Image provided by Homeland Security Emergency Management Assignment ExpectationsLength: This SLP should be 3-5 pages, not counting the title page and references.References: At least two references should be included from academic sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles). Required readings are included. Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others. When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be enclosed in quotes. The references should be cited within the text and listed at the end of the assignment in the References section (preferably in APA format).Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to question.Grammar and Spelling: While no points are deducted for minor errors, assignments are expected to adhere to standard guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. 3-5 pages excluding cover, abstract, and reference pages Steven Jones recently returned from a week-long hiking trip out West.
During the last leg of the journey, Steven’s hiking boot became lodged
in an old branch, and he fell. The mishap caused a tear in the meniscus
of his right knee. The emergency room physician told him he would need
to see an orthopedic physician to get the meniscus repaired.Steven has high-deductible insurance. When he got home, he searched
the Internet to find orthopedic physicians in his community. The first
one he found was a 35-physician group with a banner reading, “Your bones
knit best with us.” Searching the site, Steven found information on the
partners, their research, and some educational materials—but little
else. The second group he found was called Macomb Orthopedic Group; it was
made up of 10 physicians. The Web site contained a profile about each
physician as well as price estimates for various procedures. The Web
page instructed him how to register and complete the paperwork by
downloading it from the site. It also explained how to submit his
insurance information so they could supply a written estimate of costs
for the procedure.Write a paper to address the following:Describe in detail the positioning strategy for each of these physician groups.Based on what you see here, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each of these groups? Explain your reasoning. The
second group also discusses a concept called “package pricing.” Explain
how this works, and include its advantages and disadvantages. What recommendations would you make for these groups as far as their Web presence? NOTE: You need to support your work with at least 4
academic or professional peer-reviewed sources that were published
within the past 5 years.

You are a new accountant at a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company. Your company wants to develop a new therapeutic drug and needs financing. The company’s executives want the accounting department to put together a report to present to potential investors. The executives want you to include scientific findings from the first phase of the clinical trials of the drug. Although the company has had a 20% success rate in the past, the executives want the findings from the clinical trials reported so potential investors can see that this product will be successful. Another argument is that, although there are no sales yet, the clinical trials prove that once the company receives the funds to get through the clinical testing, it will obtain government approval to make as well as sell the drug, which will make the investor happy.Explain the accounting information and the characteristics of qualitative accounting information. What are the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) that the company may violate by reporting the scientific findings to investors?Respond to two or more of your classmates’ postings in any of the following ways:Build on something your classmate saidExplain why and how you see things differentlyAsk a probing or clarifying questionShare an insight from having read your classmate’s postingOffer and support an opinionExpand on your classmate’s posting.Refer to the discussion grading rubric for more information on expectations of class discussions
