The title will be whatever the argument is about

Instructor’s Instructions:

This assignment is about the tragedy on Everest, and you’re going to focus your attention on what caused the tragedy. Many people at the time debated and argued about who might have been at fault. For example, did the guides make poor decisions and cause the tragedy in some way? Is mountain climbing just an inherently dangerous hobby? Did everyone accept the risk? Did the weather cause the tragedy? Did the environment of the mountain itself cause the tragedy? Who or what is to blame?

Argument Synthesis Process

You MUST follow each of the following steps to create an effective argument synthesis. You’ll use each of these steps, typically in the introduction – body – conclusion format, to present and argue a point.

Consider Your Purpose — Your purpose usually emerges as a response to an issue or problem, another person’s opinion, or something you learn while researching. If you don’t know what you want to say, consider the following:

Do you see a problem or issue that needs to be addressed or addressed differently?

Do you agree or disagree strongly with a particular point of view? Why?

Do you find a particular perspective shocking? Why?

Formulate a Thesis (Claim) — Your thesis must address your purpose in a debatable manner.

An argument thesis consists of a CLAIM about a TOPIC.

Do not use “I think,” “I believe,” or “in my opinion” to present this or any other claim. Avoid “I” statements in most research based work.

Find and Apply Your Evidence — Once you decide what you’re arguing, research a bit, and find evidence to support your position. You’ve probably needed to research a bit to even have an opinion, so you should have some background. Some key points:

Establish background information FIRST: who, what, when, where, why. Use credible sources to do so.

Understand that evidence often needs to be found through careful study. For example, if you want to understand how legal drug use influences violence in society, you may have to really dig into criminal reports, talk to doctors and police sources, etc. The information you want may not have been readily supplied by someone else. This is called using PRIMARY sources. Primary sources require you to interpret them.

How you use the information is up to you, but you will need to show your reader how it applies to what you are claiming.

Develop an Effective Organizational Plan — How you present your argument and support it with evidence often dictates how well your audience understands your intentions. A clear organization is key. You may need to use an organizational strategy like an outline, an idea map, or note cards. Although you may be familiar with organizing a paper chronologically, by importance, or emotional impact, not all arguments fit neatly in those categories. Sometimes you must include background information, definitions, or recount historical events. Carefully determine how and when this information is included.

Voices of Diversity: Gender and Sexuality

Discussion: Voices of Diversity: Gender and SexualityGrowing up, did you see positive and well-rounded portrayals of people like you on TV and in books? Are you typically referred to by the appropriate pronouns? Do you need to conceal aspects of your identity in the workplace out of fear? If you are a cisgender person who is heterosexual, you may not have thought much about the everyday challenges of the LGBTQ community. Many of the privileges you take for granted may not be available to them.
As a profession, social work embraces diversity and strives to ensure equal rights for all through allyship and advocacy. One way to become a better ally is to understand the barriers in place for marginalized populations such as LGBTQ people. For this Discussion, you take that step by engaging in several activities designed to illuminate the LGBTQ experience.
To Prepare
View the Voices of Diversity: Gender and Sexuality video showing Social Work faculty sharing perspectives and experiences related to gender and sexuality.
Reflect on the video, identifying ideas, experiences, or statements that resonate with you.
Review the Learning Resources on practice with women and the LGBTQ population and on allyship.
Access and complete the Privilege for Sale activity in the Learning Resources.
Write a post in which you:
Analyze what you learned from the Voices of Diversity video regarding perspectives and experiences of gender and sexuality. What idea, experience, or statement resonated with you the most, and why?
Then, describe your approach to the Privilege for Sale activity and any challenges you encountered in selecting privileges. Describe at least one insight you gained from the activity.
Apply your learning to social work practice with the LGBTQ population and to allyship.
