Loss of data in any organization can have devastating effects. Thus, it is necessary to ensure that there is a disaster recovery strategy available. With such a plan, the businesses IT infrastructure can be recovered or protected thus preventing the business with unnecessary financial loss. A disaster recovery plan guides the organization to follow a system during and after the disaster. If an organization does not have a well-laid plan to prevent the impact of such attacks, the normal functioning may be affected. The organization may also face financial losses which may be attributed to direct or indirect impact on the data or information lost. It is the role of the IT department to formulate a plan based on the available infrastructure and needs of the organization (IOVAN, S., & IVANUS, 2013).

Steps an organization should take to resume normal activities after an attack

After an attack, it is necessary for the management to take the necessary steps to minimize the effects of the attack to the organization. There should be a plan which can help the company to function efficiently after the attack. The strategy is the reason many business has developed a disaster recovery plan to help them in such cases. The first step should be collecting information so that the vulnerabilities can be outlined. The collection of informationwill assist in accessing the risks involved thus creating the necessary infrastructure to prevent any further damages. After the attack, the organization should recheck its onsite and offsite recovery and backup plan so that any future attacks or loss of information can be prevented. After assessing the level of the attacks, the management should come up with an improved disaster recovery plan. The plan should be based on the current attacks such that data cannot be lost through the same means in the future(IOVAN, S., & IVANUS, 2013).

Also, the disaster recovery plan should identify any other possible means in which the information can be lost. This should be accompanied by a mitigation plan to avoid any other related attacks. Testing of the new strategy should also take place to determine its effectiveness if such activity takes place in the future. The last step should be monitoring and maintaining the system; this should be done through updates and reviews to prevent any future attacks. The management should periodically inspect the disaster recovery plan and document any changes which might be made. Such changes ensures that the system is updated against any future attacks thus creating a safe platform for security the organization’s information system (IOVAN, S., & IVANUS, 2013).

Mitigating the risk of data loss.

For an organization to mitigate the risk of data loss in its operations, it is significant to have a working disaster recovery plan. The plan should be updated to avoid any attacks and at the same time ensure that the organizational structure is up to date. The disaster recovery plan cannot be successful if the organization does not have a full understanding of its system. The nature of the IT infrastructure used should provide guidance on the requirements of the system. If the management monitors any changes in the system, it can be easy for the organization to prevent any risk of an attack. Thus, the system to be upgraded regularly to prevent loss of organizational data. The process requires a lot of research which can make it easy to identify the possible areas which the system can be attacked (Snedaker, 2013). 

Minimizingthe impact of disaster on personnel after a disaster

In every disaster, the human safety should be prioritized, it is the duty of the management to ensure that there is an active plan for it employees. The business should have a working business continuity plan which provides a recovery strategy for all the workers. The plan prevents against any attack either physically or mentally to the employees. Also, it provides a system in which employee data and information can be recovered in the long run. The crisis management plan also provides room for recovery especially if it had an impact on the workforce. The business continuity planning process thus equips the employees with knowledge and capability to deal or prepare for any crisis. Therefore, it is crucial for the organization to create an inclusive disaster recovery plan so that the different parts of the business can be catered for (Nollau, 2009).

On the other hand, the two organizations did not provide a proper back-up plan for their laptops and desktops. This amounted to a bigger loss of information which the companies could not retrieve which affected their recovery plan. Also, the two organizations did not have a managed services provider who would help in the recovery process. Although these services are a bit expensive, they create value to the organization’s data. For the two organizations, this would have helped in recovering the lost data after the attack (Nollau, 2009).
