The prompt:

On July 5, 1852, former slave Frederick Douglass delivered a speech entitled “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro” at an event hosted by the Ladies Anti-Slavery Society of Rochester, New York, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Using your annotated copy of Douglass’s speech, write an essay in which you analyze the rhetorical strategies Frederick Douglass uses to achieve his purpose. Support your analysis wth specific references to the text.

The essay’s organization:

Introduction reflecting TAG, exigence, and thesis. Remember, “exigence” is the part of a rhetorical situation that inspires, stimulates, provokes, or prompts writers to create a text.

Three body paragraphs — each identified by a topic sentence. Pull textual evidence from the speech to support your assertion followed by insightful analysis of the Douglass’s purpose and impact on the audience members. Each body paragraph should have at least three properly embedded quotes for a minimum of nine quotes for the entire essay.

Conclusion should suggest greater understanding of Douglass’s speech and its historical implications — the broader perspective revealing a universal understanding. Do not merely rehash earlier material. Instead, address the gained knowledge revealed in the literary analysis

The rules:

Typewritten in Times New Roman in either 12 to 14 pitch font;

MLA formatted structure and citation (to be covered in class prior to the due date);

Title reflecting the chosen rhetorical aspect;

Proofread to avoid typographical errors, misspellings, awkward phrasing and nonsensical statements;

Use complete sentences with proper punctuation (avoid fragmented and/or comma splices);

Do NOT use first or second person pronoun references such as “I” “me” “my” “you” or “your” etc;

Body paragraphs with topic sentence which presents the paragraphs’ argument, not statements of fact or summary;

Evidence properly integrated into commentary; and

No plagiarism, period. This analysis will be uploaded to for authentication purposes. Analysis that is presented as student’s intellectual property but is instead plagiarized will result in a CH in the gradebook.
