There are a vast number of consequences to the lack of ability to speak publicly. However, there are a greater number of benefits to possessing this vital skill. The following is why Public Speaking is such a valuable skill.
Although there are several consequences to not being able to speak in a public setting, we will focus on what some believe are the most visible. When trying to voice one’s opinions publicly, some struggle with clearly and concisely getting their main ideas across to the listeners. Another consequence is stage fright, which is the most common and most feared cost of being unable to speak in public. With the lack of the ability to speak publicly certain opportunities may be forgone, especially in the professional job market.
Not conveying thoughts and ideas into words properly could cause the listeners to lose interest, misunderstand, or even completely not comprehend what the message may even be. It is incredibly important in any conversation to keep your listeners attention. Even worse, the listener could misinterpret the message and respond or feel differently than was intended by the speaker. Although the speaker may have the listeners’ attention, comprehension is not guaranteed. In order to ensure comprehension, the speaker must learn to speak at the listeners’ level.
Everyone has been there at some point in their life, frozen with fear and unable to speak clearly or even form the next sentence in their head. We all know and fear stage fright. According to Vijai P. Sharma, Ph. D in the 1996 article entitled 90 Percent of People Feel Stage Fright found on the Mind Publications web site, “ Ninety percent of people feel stage fright when they face the prospects of a public performance, such as public speech, a recital, a dance performance, or a stage acting. ” Being passed over for a job or promotion because of the inability to speak publicly is painful and unnecessary.
These opportunities are usually few and far between and too great of a loss to let them slip by due to the lack of this vital skill. “Yet survey after survey shows that presentation skills are crucial to success in the work place. The person with strong communication skills has a clear advantage over tongue-tied colleagues – especially in a competitive job market. ” Says Toastmaster International in a newsletter entitled Because Public Speaking Skills Aren’t Debatable. These consequences may be overcome with learning the ability to speak publicly, and with this new skill comes added benefits.
The ability to speak publicly has several benefits, however we will only discuss three. Along with getting better at speaking in front of an audience comes an increased confidence in one’s self therefore raising one’s self esteem. Learning the skill of public speaking increases the ability to organize and voice ideas and thoughts in a more fluid and effective manner. After the mastery of the skill of public speaking and presenting a speech to an audience correctly, the speaker will earn the respect and admiration of their peers and colleagues.
Lack of self confidence is at the core of nervousness in social situations. However, being able to hold your own in any conversation exudes confidence in one’s ability to speak. This confidence is gained through the study of public speaking and is not an innate ability. The process of perfecting your speaking abilities will derive a sense of accomplishment; simply pulling off a successful speech will raise your self esteem. One of the most difficult elements of speaking in public is organizing and voicing your thoughts or ideas.
The best way to keep your speech on track is to learn the organization and translation of thoughts into words through the study of public speaking. Understanding the nuances of organizing and translating those thoughts reduces the chances of misinterpretation of the message to be conveyed. Once the art of public speaking has been mastered, the respect and admiration of peers and colleagues is easily won. People look up to those who have the strength and courage to speak there minds efficaciously before an assemblage without the fear of reprisal.
This respect is reinforced through the further communication between speaker and audience by displaying aptitude of public speaking. Now that we have compared and contrasted the consequences to the benefits we can clearly see that the skill of public speaking is a necessity in our daily lives. The consequence of not having this skill is apparent in our day to day communication; however, they can be overcome through the study of public speaking. The vast benefits acquired through this study greatly outweigh the repercussions of not learning this valuable skill.
