The Impact of Globalisation in the UAE

UAE is the most globalised country in the Middle East because Abu Dhabi, emirates with huge oil wealth and Dubai with entrepreneurial skills was opened as commercial hub soon after gaining independence from British. Long before UAE had started opening up to free trade, free movement of labour and joint business ventures then the other countries in Middle East. So, when the trend of globalisation becomes clear in mid 1990s most of the Middle East countries are unprepared for the economic and political impact of globalization while UAE was all set for becoming globalised at least economically. It had never taken gobalisation as challenge but as opportunity from which they can have benefit. UAE was always prepared to do this without making any compromises with his values and tradition. (THE UAE – The Challenge Of Globalisation – Part 19., 2002) UAE has set an example for the world on handling challenges by maintaining political stability and social security. By adopting open economy policies, activating private sectors and attracting foreign investors helps him in globalization. UAE has worked hard to make its way for healthy business and investment environment. (Paulo, 2004) Introduction Today globalisation is a need of every country in the world, whether it is small or big, developed or developing country. Globalisation was started in 1980, but has taken pace with the technological advancement in the sectors of transport and communication and by investing through big developing countries and opening them for international trade and investment. Even the poor countries are also trying hard to utilize the opportunity of globalisation. They are making to world markets of manufactured products and services with their huge labour. (Viswanathan, 2008) With 32,278 square miles of area, consisting of 7 small emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al-Khaimah, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Qaiwain, and Fujairah, which together makes United Arab Emirates. These emirates were united as one federal state on 2 December, 1971. Abu Dhabi is the wealthiest member in the union because of its huge oil wealth and Dubai is second largest emirates being a commercial port. Being allied to the emirates like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the remaining five small emirates are enjoying political and economic benefits. UAE is considered to have autocratic government, in which one person possesses the power. There are less political reforms in the country than the economic ones because of existence of ‘sheikh’s dilemma’ in the country. UAE has foreign policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. They believe in peaceful resolution of disputes. UAE always supports for international institution like United Nation and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). (Stone) Globalisation and UAE In terms of population and its territory Middle East may not be a good region for investment, but having good natural resources of gas and oil make these countries to actively participate in globalisation. UAE was poor desert country but the discovery of oil changed its economy markedly. The effect of globalisation had made the resources of oil so important that investors rather consider the small territory and population of the UAE. Globalization is interdependence of world economy; it requires cooperation among economies of the countries. Some techniques like outsourcing and insourcing proves to be the best method for international collaboration. Today UAE, especially Dubai is attracting many foreign investors because it provides all the facilities for business development. UAE recognized the importance of being an open country that can offer something new to the investors. Thus, offshoring, which consist of shifting of production processes and services from one country to another also plays an important role in globalization and made direct impact on the countries. Dubai is offering considerable economic conditions and opportunities to foreign investors for doing business there. The vision of UAE is to create an open country for international business investment and to give their best for building better infrastructure. At first the economy of UAE was mostly dependent on natural resources, but now it is also concentrating on other sectors for developing profit. It has begun to search other sources of income such as tourism, real estate and international finances. Globalization also permits UAE to expand its market. Its economy is not only depending on foreign trade but also on import and export market. Its top most export partners are Japan, South Korea, Thailand and India; and main export goods are natural gas, crude petroleum and dried fish. The main importers countries are Germany, UK, Italy, France, United States, China, Japan and India; and main imported goods are equipment and chemicals for inner enterprises. Another success of UAE is the application of latest technologies. The market is cooperating with modern trends and applying new knowledge to production function. Compliance advance ideas in market helps in getting efficient work in sectors like production, management and entrepreneurship. (Effect of Globalization on United Arab Emirates Market) Challenges and Opportunities Present day situation does not give any other option then to join the globalization process along with other developing nations. However it may not be same for some developing countries. Globalization interrupts the culture and mentality of UAE people. If the country wants to attract tourist and foreign investors then it have to make compromises with its deep-rooted Islamic traditions, but the strong following of rules for both locals and foreigners results in losing most of the visitors and tourists. Therefore to enter the globalization UAE become a free country with broad views. This resulted in change not only culturally but also economically. Dubai can be best example as it is surrounded by conservative countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia but it is able to attract foreign investors by allowing company to work in tax free environment. Globalization is acculturation of many countries. So it is very difficult to preserves ones culture and traditions, therefore for the sake of globalization people in UAE have to abandon some rules and values of their customs. Another Challenge of globalization is financial instability; absence of financial control can also lead to economic instability. It is true that large countries are making profits from globalization but it is not confirmed in the case of small countries. Foreign investment helps in development of the country so it is important to have correct policy and logical use of the received money. Government should check whether the countries financial sector is getting full benefit from the investments or not. (Effect of Globalization on United Arab Emirates Market) The challenges of globalization can be met through the joint effort of both public and private sector. The public sector is actively participating in development of open economy process and adapting economic and social circumstances in compliance with the requirements. On other hand private sector is getting support by establishment of industrial area and free trade zone. Enhancement in the process of privatization is letting the market forces to remedy twists and turns timely by controlling economic life. Government should not only be responsible for the growth and development, private sector should also participate. Private sector can help by improving performance and productivity. They can merge small private enterprises to make large productive unit and can increase competition. Meanwhile, Government should work with social and business organization to achieve different goals. (Paulo, 2004) On the security end, UAE has signed many defense treaties with western powers like US, Britain, France and have strong defense relations with closer nations and number of other nations. With the time there is change in thinking of people in UAE, because of positive changes brought by Dubai in field of business development. Even it has become an example for other emirates. Younger generations of UAE are leading him and are the decision makers. Their inputs are making remarkable changes in the commercial and infrastructural sectors. The younger generation is directly related to ruling families. (THE UAE – The Challenge Of Globalisation – Part 19., 2002) Conclusion United Arab Emirates is greatly influenced by Globalization. It has actively participated in the process by providing favorable environment for business and foreign investment. They also have broaden their imports and export market with increase in the number of countries. This also helped UAE in development of infrastructure of the country. Some economic techniques like outsourcing, insourcing and offshoring helped him to develop good business relations with other countries which indirectly are influenced by the globalization. Globalization also leads to openness of country which can make negative impact as in terms of culture and tradition. Government need to manage the flow of foreign investment in order to have economic stability. (Effect of Globalization on United Arab Emirates Market) From 1990 to 2003 volume of trade has been increased and high and middle income countries had made their share in world trade, this became possible only because of globalization. Globalization cannot be taken as a solution to everything. It hardly provides any opportunities, countries who have taken advantage are flourishing who don’t are sinking. Countries with right mindset can produce equality of outcome with globalization. The low income countries need international assistance and support to participate in Globalization It demands the collective action of all the countries in the world. (Viswanathan, 2008)

1. Looking at the title page of Andreas Vesalius’ De humani corporis fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body, 1543) (page 43 in The Illustration from The Works of Andreas Vesalius of Brussels), what are the symbols following the Galenic anatomic tradition and what are those of breaking from such a tradition? In the following plates in The Illustration from The Works of Andreas Vesalius of Brussels, what are the examples of physiological features demonstrate that Vesalius was still under Galen’s influence? And why was that? Conversely, what are the anti-Galenic examples you can find in these plates?
2. The account of “Anatomical Examinations of the Body of Thomas Parr” first appeared in the work of Dr. Betts, entitled: “De Ortu et Natura Sanguinis,” (The Origin and Nature of Blood) 8vo, London, 1669. The manuscript was presented to Dr. Betts by Mr. Michael Harvey, nephew of the author, with whom Dr. Betts was “on terms of intimacy.” What was Harvey’s main point? What do you think the purpose of which Harvey wrote this? What was at stake for him in this text? What evidence in the text tells you this?
3. In “Anatomical Examinations of the Body of Thomas Parr,” what was the cause of death of Thomas Parr, according to Harvey? How did Harvey determine it anatomically? How did Harvey associate the anatomical evidence with social, environmental, and other factors presented in the text to explain that Parr had this death coming? In the text, what was the historical context at the time that allowed Harvey to proceed with his anatomical examinations of Parr’s corpse?
4. According to Andrews, what was the Confucius’s doctrine of preserving the body? How was Wang Qingren able to get around the Confucius prohibition of body mutilation? What scholarly traditions influenced Wang Qingren’s writing of Yi Lin Gai Cuo (Correcting the Errors of Medicine)? How did Wang conduct his anatomical studies (methods)? What were his methods different from those of the European anatomists (Andrea Vesalius, William Harvey, John Hunter, and so forth) Why is Wang Qingren important in the history of Chinese medicine?
5. According to Shin, what was the approach and sensibility that was specific to Korean physicians of the Joseon dynasty and different from the traditional Chinese medical anatomical representation? What was the basis of their understanding of human anatomy? What was the general attitude of Korean physicians toward dissection?

Study Chapter 6 (pages 190-195) of your text.
Select a topic from the list below and construct an argument. Warning: Please make sure you work on one of the issues listed — no other arguments will be accepted!
Make sure you fully understand what COMPLETENESS means (pages 186-7) OK, let me highlight a fundamentally important part of it:
You must look at and CONSIDER the opposing arguments (as every inductive argument must). It means that listing the counterarguments is not good enough; you have to say which premises you find true or strong (and why) and which ones you find false or weak (and why) — otherwise your argument would be one-sided. Obviously, accepting certain premises against our argument will not make it weaker since every issue is complex.

SAMPLE (tongue in cheek – sort of):

Issue: Is it OK to throw out the leftover fast food from my car after I finished my meal in the parking lot?
My conclusion: No, it is not OK
My premises (arguments/points/supporting evidence): 1. It looks disgusting and creates a mess for others. 2. It is hard to clean up after other vehicles drive over it and spread it around. 3. Cleaning up generates expenses, increasing the cost of the product. 4. It is unsanitary and attracts vermin, creating a health hazard.
Counterarguments/points/evidence I consider strong (but not stronger than my argument): 1. ‘I do not feel like getting out of my car and dispose of the leftovers properly.’ 2. ‘I don’t care, anyway (f. u.).’
Counterarguments/points/evidence I consider weak or false, and their refutation (why they are weak or false): 1. Some people say that food thrown away in the parking lot does not affect them at all. This claim is false; anyone can be affected negatively by rats and roaches, bacteria growing on rotten food, etc. (since no one is immune) so it is our common interest to keep those critters away as much as possible instead of feeding them. 2. Some people say that there are employees already whose job is to clean, so let them earn their salary. This is a weak argument because the less we mess up the place, the fewer people are needed to keep the parking lot clean. Also, the cost of cleanup may be reflected in the prices.
My conclusion restated: It is not OK to throw away leftover food in the parking lot.
Strong feelings or even high passion are not elements of critical thinking only reason is, as well as factual information. Morality, religion, value judgments, desires, wishes, preferences, tastes, likes, and dislikes do not make good subjects for critical arguments! Why? Because others may have other dislikes and likes, tastes, preferences, wishes, desires, value judgments, religion or morality, and the answer to the question regarding those, ‘why do they prefer what they prefer instead of what we prefer’ the answer is ‘just because’ — end of the story.

Issues to choose from:

Bullying is a problem in the USA and people tend to bully bullies as ‘punishment.’ Should bullies be bullied?
Should school uniforms be mandated?
Plastic bags are an enormously huge environmental problem and many countries (and cities) have banned them. Should they be banned in the US?
Music and art may seem like ‘useless’ subjects in school, but research shows that they are useful in the development of youth. Should they be mandated in school?
Should child beauty competitions be banned?

This past Summer I went to New Orleans on a family trip to experience food, entertainment, and the outdoors. Once

This past Summer I went to New Orleans on a family trip to experience food, entertainment, and the outdoors. Once. This past Summer I went to New Orleans on a family trip to experience food, entertainment, and the outdoors. Once we arrived we quickly found out that New Orleans has a vibrant tourism industry built around the issue of slavery. There are many tours to various landmarks within the city but the big excursion is to an actual former slave plantation that has been converted to a tourist attraction.  I immediately thought it was ridiculous that anyone would want to visit a place with such a horrible past but after a few days in New Orleans we decided to give this a try. We went out to the plantation that I have linked below. Upon arrival, you are welcomed and offered to sip on a mint julep “just like the old days” and to enjoy the scenery of the plantation on the veranda before the actual tour starts.  Once the tour started it became obvious that efforts were made to decry the horrors of slavery but also to shed light on the heroism of those early Americans (slaveowners) that made American what it is today.  And in this delicate balance of the violence of slavery, the heroism and hard work of plantation owners and nation-creation we end up in a very confusing place! Of course, this is a very complicated situation and no doubt my own race had to do with the dynamics of the interaction with staff and other visitors.  Being of Mexican descent with a family that “passes” as Anglo, as we engaged  the tour guide on thorny historical race issues, we could tell it was obviously confusing to him. The question is this; should this type of tourism be allowed and if so how should it be regulated? Look at the website and do some other browsing on neighboring plantations. All that you have read should prepare you to make a solid statement on slave tourism.   Argue why or why not this type of tourism should be allowed to exist.  Does it press the issue of making sure this type of racism never exists again or does it empower latent racism?  Be very specific for your reasons why or why not. You should quote language from the attached document to aid in making your point. You only have to read the first five pages of the Frederick Douglass speech. This should be no more than one page but should make references to either the readings or other material you have found. This is an exercise in historical interpretation. IMPORTANT!!! Submit this to me under the “Slavery Tourism” for a possible 100 points for the entire exercise.  Additionally, to get the maximum points, you should go to the discussion called Slavery Tourism that I am creating and post your one page there as well.   Then, after all have been posted, you should also POST a response to  another students posting.   This is meant for you to engage another student in their ideas. Be respectful, be courteous and most of all be clear what you are trying to say.  Agree or disagree with your fellow classmate, just be clear and make sure you give a short reason why.  Again, this is 10 percent of your grade!   Post it to me by THURSDAY MIDNIGHT, then post it in the discussion and engage at least one other student. Good luck. This is the plantation we visited: and please give your review on this.    In the winter of 2019, I visited the Boone Hall Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina. As I walked through the Boone house and listened to our tour guide, I noticed that she had not mentioned slavery at all. The only mention of slavery I had seen in Charleston was when I visited the slave quarters on my own accord. These small houses were located on the outskirts of the Boone Hall Plantation, in which the usual live tours were supplemented with television monitors and audio narration. After noticing the lack of slavery discussion from the other tours in Charleston, it seemed as if the people of Charleston wanted to forget their horrible past, desiring only to remember the good. Historical cities such as Charleston should be able to openly discuss their legacy because they would not be who they are without it. I believe that slavery tourism should still continue but should be done so with a holistic approach. Discussing the honest truth about slavery would help eliminate racism on a national scale. In contrast, avoiding the topic of slavery would have the opposite effect. Similarly, the holocaust is remembered and discussed to prevent future generations from repeating history. In addition, ignoring history and creating a new narrative for future generations means downplaying the events of the past which is extremely harmful. Frederick Douglass reminds us that our founding fathers “declared for liberty and independence” (Douglass). The same must be done for those oppressed by slavery, in the present and future. The events of slavery taught us that America was built on the foundations of liberty and justice for all, not only for those deemed worthy of it. Our founding fathers noted that “justice, liberty and humanity were ‘final;’ not slavery and oppression” (Douglass). The point of the slave tours is not only to show the privileged lifestyle that these slave owners lived but also to remind us that history is a trend that repeats itself if we are not wary. This past Summer I went to New Orleans on a family trip to experience food, entertainment, and the outdoors. Advantages and disadvantages of public and private companies

Advantages and disadvantages of public and private companies. Public companies have the advantage over private companies in access to capital to grow the business. But private companies can react more quickly to challenges and opportunities without going through exhaustive decision making processes. Advantages and disadvantages of public companies. Public company is able to raise funds and capital through the sale of its securities it is important historically. To ease of raising capital public companies may issue their securities as compensation for those that provide services to the companies, such as their directors, officers and employees. The basic advantage of public facilities is that the tax paid by the people is used in developing facilities for the people who paid the taxes. Public companies are typically established fair market value in the stock exchange where it is determined by price of security and sold where security is traded. The cost of being public is huge and the benefits are questionable if you are a microcap. A public company has to meet the requirement to publicly disclose much financial information which could be useful to competitors. Public companies spend more for certified public accountants and other bureaucratic paper work required of public companies by government regulation. Public companies need a huge capital to get the capital market for purchasing equipment and plant expansions. Because of security regulations public companies requires doing more of paperwork. Public companies have an additional cost for administrative overhead and personnel needed to meet regulatory requirement. It could be quite expensive for stockholders for mailings. Advantages and disadvantages of private companies Private companies are less expensive as it requires very less paper work and very limited shareholders. As it is the private companies information are secured, so that’s the way they are dealing more with government agency, because private companies works sensitive with government. The business is kept confidential as it is a private company which is less interacting with media or press. Shareholders have very less liability, as they have agreed upon business stability but the business is not disturbed by the death of shareholders. While private companies may also issue their securities as compensation for services, the recipient of those securities often have difficulty selling them on the open market. Private companies have high taxes, less dividends and the often deter small-medium sized business owners. Ans) 2 The small private companies are directed on the attentions to contral according to the commander theory it is excercised by the people. The power to deploy the resources are pointed by the persons or a group of persons. The person who has such power can command over this resources. By using commander notion we cannot appear into the reasonable interpretation of principle and functions of accounting without using false abstraction, such as the entity or fund. A sole proprietor is a commander. So the proprietor have control over the resources of their firm as they are emphasies by the ownership aspect. Control is an economic function whereas ownership have to work in the legal relationship. Profit is generated from the resources have ability to command over this resources by the proprietors. According to commander theory the supporters are undue and placed on the proprietor as owner rather than as manager. But in large companies shareholder have very less command over its resources as they are part of owners, managers have very limited control over resources. The focus of accounting for such companies affects the functions of accounting which is carried out for commanders. For the benefit of the people accounting records are maintain, financial statement are prepared and are analysed by people on and behalf of people. And financial statement reports by commander to commander. The commander of the firm undertakes accounting procedures, accept owner or entity or fund. In the balancesheet the report of which is showing the resources which is entrusted to the commander and control but does not own. Balancesheet is prepared on behalf of commander is a statement which shows the sources from hwere the commander has rececived resources and the application of those resources. In the accounting practice commander theory is not directly effected. Proprietary and entity theories appears on the oppostie view which is the notion of economic control, and the use of procedures related to propietrary and entity view are simaltaneouly emphasised by the commander theory. In determining the nature of asset and in determining what entities become paramount by the notion of ‘control’ which is included in consolidation account. The objective of financial objective is dependent for small enterprise which value upon to pursued decision making, practical and control. The bring the value in control and not easily measurable, and small business frequently taking action such as if the company needs more new capital for business but they will refuse to bring new stockholders. To access the financial infornmation from the external financing inevitably brings with it and arranged its over coming difficulties between those enterprise and the financiers concerned. The information of a report that of a small enterprise must required to support the debt financing. Financing and profit distribution decisions made in small enterprise might be strongly influnced by a desire to avoid such accountibility. Ans) Proprietary theory emphasies for the small business whereas entity theory for large business. Proprietary theory views the firm as an renewal of its owner’s but by keeping in mind as an accounting purpose the entity does not exist seperately from its owner’s. For this outlook it is supported by the various participant in the business sectors. In large companies shareholders who has very limited holdings but they are not seen as owner of the company but looks as an investors. So they believe that they are working for company and as an shareholders. For the benefit of the company they reinvest their dividends as belonging to the company. As from the owner’s perspective financial statement are prepared for the advantage of the owner’s. And for controlling shareholders assets of the company is seen as asset of company whereas liablities of company are viewed as a liabilities. As an wealth of the company increases with increases in revenue and decreases with more expenses. The proprietary theory affects the only in each sole company for increasing profit instead of entire companies. As per the entity theory they maintain financial statement under the joint financial statement as per the view of the business entity. For the accounting purpose legal entity are separately considered from owner. In the interest of the entity consolidated statement are intended to all parties of the entity. The person who are having ownership interest in the consolidated entity are considered separately and distinct as an controlling and non-controlling shareholders of the entity. No preference, no emphasis is given to any members of these entity group such as controlling shareholders non-controlling shareholders and consolidated entity. All profit or loss assets or liabilities equity are merged into one group of entity under the entity theory and they are united for one entity as not for separate controlling and non- controlling shareholders who are involved in the joint net income and the ownership of business group. If a company decides to transform itself into a public company from a private company their is no magic or formula which qualifies a private company to transform into a public company but the factors which determine a public company can hire plenty of shareholders from any market which can sells its product or services. And company should keep in mind a good regional and national market is in a boom situation you can transform into the public company. The best way to know that it is beneficial or not for company whether it should transform to public company is their management team can grow your company or not and their profit margin because it affects on the accounts of the company. Ans4) “Yes, I do agree with this statement. Proprietary view of accounting keeps in mind as an interest of all accounting concepts, procedures and rules are formulated to the owner’s. Owner’s of the company seeks to acheive their purpose and to maximise their profit or wealth. As per the proprietary view for the small business really control by their owner’s and generally are not necessary to prepare general-purpose financial statement for a business. General purpose financial statment is only prepared when it is needed by its users for its financial statement which is opposed to get those requirement of only a exacting group such as an management, creditors, investors or regulatory bodies. And this whole prupose of financial statement is based on GAAP (Generally accepted accounting principle). Small business does not require to prepare general purpose financial statement and they do not really make an extension of their owner’s because their profit will be maximise and will not be managed properly. On presenting accounting standards for small business entities they have their levels for satisfaction or dissatisfaction which are hurdles and burden on imposing the financial statement to the prepare’s and their standards become weaker. Small business entities cannot bear to maintain financial statement as it is costly and burdensome which casues the overall cost to continue to increase. Advantages and disadvantages of public and private companies
