The Knight Navy Seals are most known for their fearlessness and their heroic actions. In the Canterbury Tales the character known as the knight was described as truthful, honorable, generous and courteous. Those are also qualities you would find in a Navy Seal. The perfect example of how the two relate would be when Chaucer states, “he had done nobly in his sovereign’s war and ridden into battle, no man more.. ” Both the knight and Navy Seals are most known for their great triumphs during numerous amount of fights and battles. ? More and more, now-a-days, you come across a young adult who randomly pops up in the spotlight without doing anything to actually become famous. You later find out the are some huge superstars son or daughter. For example, Paris Hilton was only on any producers radar because of how rich her daddy was. In the Canterbury Tales the squire, also known as the knights son, hadn’t really done much to be so popular but because of his fathers accomplishments he was very well known. “Courteous he was, lowly and serviceable, and carved to serve his father at the table. This is a perfect example of how the squire and Paris, alike, were both flirtatious and wild on the streets but when it came down to being in their parents presence, they were on their best behavior.? The Prioress When a new President is elected, the citizens expect the new political figure to be most intelligent and hold a positive image. The same expectations are held for a high rank religious figure. In the Canterbury tales, the nun was suppose to be a do-good no matter what type of person. When in reality her priorities were focused mainly on her her precious dogs and her elegant clothing.
When reading about the many negative qualities of the nun only one kind of person comes to mind. A “fake bum” who in reality has a nice car and makes a fairly good living but is so greedy that they dress up as homeless people and beg for money on the side of the street as if they need it. “And she had little dogs she would be feeding with roasted flesh, or milk, or fine white bread. ” No animal, even in the 21st century, should be treated that well. The nun, along with the fake bum on the street, should be using their extra money to help the less fortunate.?
The Monk Reading the description of the monk reminds me of a vegetarian that claims they can still eat fish and still call themselves a vegetarian. The monk claims to be pure and wholesome, yet his favorite hobby is hunting. “He did not rate that text at a plucked hen which says that hunters are not holy men. ” The monk paid no mind to the fact that hunting was not something he should be participating in. All he cared about was the fact that he got good quality meant and furs out of it. ? The Friar
I often hear stories about teenagers being caught with illicit drugs and instead of being arrested and penalized, the police officer negotiates with the teen. This negotiation often includes the teen handing over the drug to the police officer personally and getting off the hook with a clean record. The friar is “licensed” to hear confessions, the only difference in this particular friar’s method is that normally to be forgiven of all sins you would have to pray, but in his case if you pay him off or bride him you are free to go and easily forgiven. Sweetly he heard his penitents at shrift with pleasant absolutions, for a gift. ” This quote is justifying that the friar, along with police officers who accept drugs as bribes, are purely greedy and have no care for the wellbeing of society. Even though their job title is mainly focused on restoring the wellbeing of society. ? The Merchant Charles Ponzi is most well known for his devious yet brilliant schemes. So brilliant, in fact, that these types of schemes were later names after him and “ponzi schemes”. The merchant in the Canterbury Tales was most well known as a ‘shrewd trader’. He was expert at currency exchange. The estimable Merchant so had set his wits to work, none knew he was in debt, he was so stately in negotiation. ” This just goes to show you how manipulative and cunning Charles Ponzi and the merchant really were, although they had their own financial troubles that were deeply hidden they got by purely on whit and illegal trades.? The Clerk If you aspire to be your class valedictorian you need to put in extensive amounts of time and energy. I have never heard of even an honors student who claims they didn’t need to try or study at all to reach their academic goals.
The clerk spend all of his time and money on books and reading and learning. “Whatever money from his friends he took, he spent on learning or another book…His only care was study, and indeed, he never spoke a word more than was need. ” No matter what the consequence or situation at hand studying was always first in the clerk’s mind. ? The Franklin Donald Trump has clearly become accustom to his ’high roller’ lifestyle. He has an endless supply of money therefore he has an endless array of thing he can buy and do. The Franklin enjoys life’s many amenities simply because he can.
He has large amounts of land and money therefore he has no boundaries. “He loved a morning sop of cake and wine, he lived for pleasure and had always done. ” The Franklin and Donald trump, both, live for fun and pleasure in a spontaneous fashion because they can afford it and not have to worry about debt or going broke. ? The Cook Gordon Ramsey is very well known for his keen, unique way of running a kitchen and cooking amazing food. He creates both sweet and savory creations of only the highest quality. “he could roast and seethe and boil and fry, make good thick soup and make a tasty pie. This goes to show you that the cook was very diverse in his culinary abilities and would stop at nothing to make high quality food.? The Skipper Captain Jack Sparrow is a shameless, cruel, battle hungry pirate. He will easily slay any sad soul who decides to stand in his way. The skipper is known for his advanced fighting skills and his shameless way of murdering anyone who challenges him. “If, when he fought, the enemy vessel sank, he sent the prisoners home; they walked the plank. ” The skipper, like Jack Sparrow, had no remorse for the lives he took whether they were innocent or deserving.
All they cared about was victory and celebrating.? The Doctor Steve Jobs is notorious for his brilliant, fruitful mind. He was possibly one of the most brilliant men to live. In the Canterbury tales, the doctor is not only a skilled physician, he also has a knack fro astronomy. “For, being grounded in astronomy, he watched his patience favorable star, and by his natural magic knew what are” This doctor was no ordinary doctor, he linked healing with the sky and stars to guide his medicinal miracles onto a whole new level.
This is almost has amazing as Steve Jobs creating gadgets such as an iPhone or even an iPod. ? The Wife of Bath Elizabeth Taylor was married and divorced eight times yet she was still wealthy and abundantly successful. The wife of bath, although divorced five times, still dressed nicely and appeared worthy of nice things. “Her kerchiefs were of finely woven ground; I dared have sworn they weighed a good ten pound,.. ” Any kerchief that could possibly weigh ten pounds is an expesive item in my mind.? The parson is known as being very devout and loyal to his followers no matter at what cost. When I read about someone as wholesome as he I think of Jesus. Jesus, although very poor, never gave up and always stayed loyal to his followers. “Yet he was rich in holy thought and work. ” The parson was very poor but his strong religious beliefs kept his wealthy in belief and worship.? The Pardoner Walking through the streets of New York City you pass a countless number of vendors attempting to sell you ‘name brand’ items for only a fraction of the store price.
The manciple buys fake religious artifacts and uses his con-artist skills to sell them to the rich folks for bundles more then they are actually worth. “Now isn’t it a marvel of God’s grace that an illiterate fellow can outpace the wisdom of a heap of learned men? ” The manciple was uneducated and still managed to out smart some of the most keen, educated minds the town had to offer.? The Miller A bodybuilder that is on steroids will naturally have some sort of emotion and personality balance issues due to the drugs being pumped through their system.
If a huge body builder walked up to you and told you to give them you lunch money I highly doubt you would think twice before giving it to them simply due to their huge stature. The miller was no different. He was huge and menacing. “A great stout fellow big in brawn and bone. He did well out of them, for he could go and win the ram at any wrestling show. ” Needless to say this guy was huge and he took full advantage of his size by stealing extra bags of grain knowing no one in their right mind would try to stop him.? DiscussionThere are many ways for people to come into contact with our government. One of the most common ways is to during a “police stop.” Police stops are simply an action taken by the police to stop the flow of traffic or a vehicle in order to investigate something that appears out of place that may affect public safety.
The mantra of the police is “to serve and protect” the public from harm. Among their many duties, police officers are responsible for deterring or stopping crime, keeping the peace, apprehending criminals, managing and controlling the flow of traffic, and investigating crime.
The police officers do this by patrolling the neighborhoods and business areas that they are assigned to. They continuously scan and observe what is happening in their environment and investigate when things appear to be “out of place.” Examples of things that may appear out of place include, but are not limited to: a speeding car in a school zone when children are in school; a group of people loitering around a business, bank or home; someone wearing dark clothing with a hoodie walking on a dark street at night; a group of cars racing down a street at night; a car weaving in and out of traffic; or a car running a red light. These are all situations that require further investigations by the police. Traffic stops are one of the most common types of police stops. Most police stops are for legitimate reasons. They are not personal, the officer is just trying to do his or her job.
Protecting the public is a very dangerous and high stress job. Police officers, like firefighters, paramedics and soldiers in the combat zones often see the worst that humanity has to offer everyday. Police officers are injured or killed on the job every year. It has become a more dangerous profession these past few years with public opinion talking about defunding the police. And yet police officers go out and to their job every day. To serve and to protect, not knowing if today will be the day they get their ticket punched and don’t make it home.
Being a police officer is a high stress job with the threat of death or injury just around the corner. It is surprising that not more officers have PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Perhaps they do, but it is being underreported.
We, the public, want the police protection but some of us don’t want to show them any respect. Police officers are humans and they have feelings too. Remember that in a POLICE STOP the officer’s FIRST PRIORITY is to protect themselves from getting shot, killed or injured. They are on a heightened alert for any perceived threat or danger to their physical well-being. Anything you can do to lessen their “very real” concerns about their personal health and safety will go a long way towards ensuring your personal safety.
How you act during a police stop goes a long way towards determining how you experience the situation. Remember, the police have a duty and responsibility to stop and investigate something that appears to be out of place. It’s not personal, its’ their job.

Overview of the LawLaws regulate the flow of goods and services throughout a society. Laws determine the direction and flow of the goods and determines who can take advantage of this flow before others. For example, a patent is a licensed monopoly. The federal government (i.e.,g USPTO – United States Patent and Trademark Office) grant license monopolies to inventors to commercialize their inventions before anyone else can profit from the invention. The theory being that it takes time and money to create the invention and the inventor should be able to recapture the fruits of his/her investment before the invention becomes freely accessible to everyone.
Drug companies rely on patents to protect their markets and to bring in huge profits. While they have a monopoly on the manufacture and sale of the drug, they can charge higher prices. The drug company may try to apply for additional patents to create a technology moat or fortress around its core patented technologies to extend the life of the patent to keep competitors out, or it may try to find new uses for its drug(s).
As the patent is nearing the end of its life cycle, the drug company begin to lower its prices to compete with the generic drugs in the same market space after the patent’s usefulness has ended. The drug company may move onto the next “big thing” and leave the market to its competitors to pick up the scrapes of what is left. For many large multinational companies, a small market or a niche market does not produce the profit margins that they require to keep expending resources in a certain area. Generally, if the niche market size is less than $1 billion, major multinationals will pull out of the market space. It’s too small for them.
This creates business opportunities for the niche market players in the space. When the demand for the product is limited and the profit margins are too small, competitors will leave the market place.
The number of players leaving the market place may create a vacuum for a bit player to make a lot of money. Remember, in the capitalist market system, supply and demand is supposed to reign supreme. The government has regulated the flow of goods and services by implementing laws for the big Pharma players have but has neglected the small players and the fringe markets.
When the market is down to 1-2 players, they can pretty charge what they want based on what the market will bear.
Here are two examples of how drug companies were able to identify a niche market where there was a high demand for its product, they were the only manufacturer, the need for the product was great, the market for the market was very small, less than 2% of the entire US population used the product, and the profit margins were thin. Reading Assignment Read the articles below on how some pharmaceutical companies are changing the social and economic dynamics of the generic marketplace. These companies are buying up the right to manufacture and sell generic drugs (whose patent protection have long since lapsed) that have small niche markets. They are repackaging the drug and selling it for a higher price. In one case, a drug that cost $1.00 to manufacture and sold for $13.50 was rebranded and sold for $750.
