Sociological Imagination and Research Methods
Sociologists look beyond the individual and their immediate environment for explanations of why people act the way they do and why social phenomena exist. As you read in Conley, Chapter 1, C. Wright Mills’s concept of the sociological imagination helps us to connect personal troubles, or individual biographies and experiences, with the larger social forces that shape and influence them.

Read the following article on how the format and content of course syllabi have changed in recent years, then contribute your ideas in discussion on the topic. Develop your posts in paragraphs, supporting your thoughts with specific references to material in the Conley reading, Chapters 1 and 2.

President Lyndon Baines Johnson launched the “war on poverty” in his 1964 State of the Union Address (an audio recording and text transcript). “This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America. I urge this Congress and all Americans to join with me in that effort,” stated President Johnson. “It will not be a short or easy struggle, no single weapon or strategy will suffice, but we shall not rest until that war is won. The richest Nation on earth can afford to win it. We cannot afford to lose it.”

The 50th anniversary (January 4, 2014) of the war on poverty occasioned an outpouring of commentary and debate–which continues to the present–over the government’s responsibility and ability to create effective solutions to poverty. On one side of the debate (let’s call it the “pro side”) are those who consider the war a qualified success: that anti-poverty programs and policies have prevented the poverty rate from climbing higher and that conditions have improved for many Americans (see, for example, New York Times: 50 Years Later War on Poverty a Mixed Bag). This side includes many progressives and liberals, like the authors of our textbook, Robert and Jeanette Lauer (see their conclusion to the chapter on poverty).

On the other side (the “con side”) are many neo-liberals, conservatives, libertarians, and others who think that the war-on-poverty solutions largely failed and who believe in a more limited role for government and a larger role for other institutions, especially the marketplace.
