While the assignment consists of two distinct patches they should be integrated or ‘stitched together’ to form a coherent piece: a patchwork. Two ways of doing this are:

Using ‘signposting’ to guide the read as to what is in each patch and how they relate to each other. You can do this by giving each patch a short introduction and conclusion.

By carrying themes through the patches; e.g. one quite straightforward way to do this is to relate the discussion in both patches to the particular service user group you chose to write about in throughout the patchwork text. You can also, where appropriate, cross-reference to points you made and or will make in the other patch (e.g. ‘As I discussed in Patch One…..’).

The points below give general guidance for Patch One. We will discuss the assignment in the taught sessions and the guidance below is supplementary, not an alternative, to that. If you do have any questions about the assignment please do discuss them with your module tutor.

Patches One and Two are linked in that Patch One is a more theoretical discussion of how the well-being of service users and/or carers is affected by social inequalities and Patch Two is concerned with the social work practice response

As a starting point you should choose a specific service user or carers group to write about. You then need to define and discuss three things:

What well-being is, particularly as it relates to the service user (or carers) group you have chosen to discuss.

What social inequalities in health are, the forms and extent they take and especially their causes.

What a life course perspective is and how it can be used to help understand the well-being of your chosen service user or carers groups.

This assignment should linked to show how a life course perspective can shed light on service users’ well-being, especially the ways in which they are affected by social inequalities in health. This assignment should:

I found the Economic Interactive Tutorial, “Cost Concepts” by author Samuel L. Baker (1985-2000) very useful, because it introduces and defines the economics concepts of total cost, fixed cost, variable cost, and marginal cost.  Also, the tutorial provides example charts and graphs of each concept.  


Moreover, according to my search I found this tutorial video, “Maximizing Profit Practice – Micro 3.9” by author Jacob Clifford (2014), very useful for this module because the video shows a step by step calculation of each column: output (OP), variable cost (VC), fixed cost (FC), total cost (TC), and marginal cost (MC).

Also, the video talks about what kind of formula used to calculate each column.  For example, to calculate the TC column used formula: TC = VC + FC.  I found this formula was useful, because after completing the column TC, this helps calculate the MC column using formula:

This tutorial is useful. It gives detailed descriptions of concepts in this class. It uses an example of home care to explain concepts such as marginal cost, variable cost, fixed cost, and total cost. The tutorial also uses diagrams to illustrate various concepts. The tutorial also has questions to check if the user has understood calculations and concepts.

I prefer video tutorials. This tutorial is short but gives a detailed explanation of different ideas. The video shows how to calculate the total cost, marginal cost, average variable cost, and average total cost. The video also explains what these concepts entail.



The Pearson lesson was useful for me because it focused on the principles that I was struggling with. I was having a hard time understanding the utility of marginal cost (MC). I was having a hard time understanding why a business would bother operating if the average cost exceeded the price. It turns out that if the average variable cost is less than the price, total revenue would exceed total variable cost and operating at a loss could make sense, though is probably not sustainable.


I’ve found to be a valuable (free) resource for most of my MBA courses. I used the Marginal Benefit and Marginal Cost section of the microeconomics chapter to help me through module two of this course. Perhaps others will find it useful. 

BONUS: The Motley Fool is another good resource, and proved useful for my understanding of module two. It helped me understand why the marginal cost is horizontal, i.e., doesn’t slope northward like total and variable costs.

About a 2/3 of your project grade will depend on this design and simulation portion. The second part of the project is IC layout. Grading depends on whether you pass LVS and DRC, and the quality of your layout (ask yourself if the layout “looks” good). About a 1/3 of project grading will depend on this layout portion.
