For the final paper, analyze a complex narrative using concepts discussed over the course of the semester.  You should organize your analysis around what makes this show important, innovative, or in some way worthy of critical attention. You may focus on one episode of a series or discuss several.  You may, if you choose, focus on a series pilot or finale.

Some possible concepts are: production style, important semiotic signs and oppositions, analysis of opening credits, analysis of narrative structure, treatment of character(s), strategies to engage viewers, operational aesthetic, the antihero in a drama or comedy, generic transformation, revision, or adaptation, and/or any transmedia elements. You don’t have to address all these concepts—decide which are most pertinent to your argument.

Organize your paper around the following:

Introduction: Describe the program you are analyzing. Give any pertinent background/production context. Identify generic influences. You will need to do outside research for this section.  State your argument/thesis here.  What is important about this show? Why are you choosing it for your analysis?

Body: Develop your argument by applying the specific analytic tools you have decided to use.  Reference assigned articles to explain and support your points.  For example, if you are writing a paper on the success (or failure) of the Dexter finale, you may want to refer to the articles on character identification, the antihero, narrative closure, and complex narrative. Cite these sources using APA or Chicago style (articles are all referenced on the syllabus). Define the concepts you use—assume someone is reading your paper who is encountering these ideas for the first time.  Support your points with specific examples from the show you are analyzing—watch the show or episode carefully to make observations that go beyond the obvious. Notice how this is done in many of the assigned readings for the course.

Conclusion: tie your argument together.   What does this say about importance of the show/television/culture.

This should be around 2100-2400 words (7-8 pages).
