These responses are designed to help you work through the class material in order to be ready to participate in class discussions. Because this class is heavily front-loaded, you will want to read strategically (there are multiple chapters in most of the Discussion prep assignments).
How/when/what to submit:
You’ll need to read the assigned reading (read strategically – focusing on the things that are new to you and/or that you think apply to you personally as a speaker) and post your thoughts to canvas no later than the deadline listed in canvas.
What to write about:
These responses are open-ended so you can write about whatever you want or need to, but earnest effort to produce an academic examination of the text or material is expected. For example, your discussion prep could detail your reaction to the text, address some problematic or puzzling aspect of the text, discuss an aspect of the reading that you found particularly interesting, and/or simply relate the reading to previous information or experiences you have encountered. If, after the reading, you were left with more questions than answers, then discuss those – maybe try searching out additional information from other texts or online.
At a minimum, your response should identify what you read in the text (and where you found it in the text), show that you understood it (or are able to ask educated questions about it), and show that you can apply this new knowledge to a public speaking situation (for example, “in high school I gave a speech and ____ happened” or “I can see this applying to speeches I might have to give in the workplace because _____” or any other way you can connect what you read to “the real world”)..
You do not necessarily need to summarize the work for us (or provide unnecessary definitions), but if it helps your response, then include them. Even if we read the same thing you did, we don’t know your take on it. So, one of your chief responsibilities is to explain your thinking to us clearly, concisely, and convincingly (i.e. use examples, be as brief as possible without compromising the integrity of your thoughts, and use quotes/examples from the reading(s) to strengthen or clarify your position).
Response length & grading:
These are submitted as discussion posts so you might want to write and save them in a word processing program like MS word first and then copy-paste into Canvas to submit (that way you don’t have to worry about any technical issues).
These don’t need to be novels but they do need to be thorough. Make sure your response is 100-150 words per chapter in the assignment (so 1 well-formed paragraph per chapter). If there are multiple chapters in a reading assignment, you should address each chapter individually (you can do this by responding 2 each chapter individually in one post or make a separate post for each chapter).
Each individual Discussion prep assignment is worth zero points according to canvas because it will receive either a complete or incomplete grade. Complete/Incomplete grading means that if your response meets all of the criteria above, you will earn a complete grade for an individual Discussion prep assignment. Most of the essay assignments are centered around a thesis statement, which you may remember from the lesson is a personal, debatable claim that should appear in a single statement at the end of your introduction paragraph (please underline them). Then, each of your body paragraphs is constructed to serve as support in proving your thesis.
Your introduction will provide a brief synopsis of the story and then smoothly transition into the last sentence of your introduction—the thesis statement. Next, you will develop at least three body paragraphs, each dedicated to one example (such as a scene) in your chosen medium that serves as support for your thesis claim. Finally, you will compile a conclusion paragraph that synthesizes your findings.
Creating the thesis statement:
Is your argument focused and meaningful in a way that it also offers a clear-cut, but debatable point of view, which a reader might either agree or disagree with? Avoid claims that are too obvious to the readers—offer them a new idea! Remember, a thesis also serves as a map for your essay, providing a promise of subtopics you will discuss in your body paragraphs in the order in which they appear in your essay.
Sample thesis statement: In The Midnight’s Shadow, Charles Bellingham begins as a lonely, self-loathing candle maker, but after he meets Miss Charmaine, begins working for the king, and takes an understudy, he transforms into a confident man who sees the townspeople and the kingdom as a friendly and prosperous community.
Developing the body paragraphs:
The way you present your supporting evidence is just as important as the evidence itself. When you create a body paragraph with the goal of supporting a claim in your thesis, you want to include a balance of research and/or examples with original material. In other words, original material refers to discussions you develop that help explain the connection between your research and/or examples and your thesis claim. You don’t want to assume that your research and/or examples are enough to prove your thesis—you want to inform your reader how and why cited material serves the purpose you intend.
Therefore, begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that affirms your opinion. A topic sentence for the first body paragraph in a paper with the thesis from above might say, “Miss Charmaine, ever so charming in her ways, bumps into a scowling Mr. Bellingham, only to annoy him further, but as he slowly raises his gaze to evaluate the source of this unpleasantry, he is rather surprised to see a such a lovely creature affectionately maintaining his stare, eliciting an intrigue that serves as the first defining moment in Charles’ positive transformation.” Next, follow up the topic sentence with more about this scene that serves as the defining moment. Then, spend significant time explaining how the events you just discussed prove your thesis. Finally, end the paragraph with a concluding sentence that synthesizes your efforts.
Compiling the conclusion:
Lastly, compile a conclusion paragraph that summarizes your findings in a new manner, using fresh language and perspective. Make sure to work in a restatement of your thesis statement (but not a repetitive version) as well as any other relevant ideas you present in the essay. You want your conclusion to read like new information but without actually presenting new arguments. In sum, synthesize instead of summarize.

He criticized the old mercantilist system and stressed that only new principles could help nations prosper. Thus, Adam Smith believes that the mercantilist system cannot fit in the society of the 18th century. According to the mercantilist system, the major way to accumulate wealth is to accumulate gold and ensure balanced trade. Another principle of this system is exporting. The mercantilist system heavily relies on exporting goods and products to other countries. Mercantilists think that this can contribute to the development of industries and other sectors of the economy as gold is accumulated. However, Adam Smith claims that these principles will lead to deterioration of economy as gold does not mean much if people do not produce goods (Kucukaksoy 110). The philosopher also emphasizes that export hurts the development of the country as people within the country do not get the goods they produce (Smith 166). Moreover, the philosopher notes that the country needs materials and goods to produce other products. For instance, if the country produces cotton, there should be factories producing clothes. Hence, people will have jobs and have money to buy the products they produce. It is also necessary to add that the mercantilist system is based on significant governmental control. It is believed that there should be centralized power that can allocate funds and distribute goods. However, Adam Smith stresses that the economy should be uncontrolled as it is governed by natural laws. It is possible to state that the physiocratic system can be regarded as a complete contrast to the mercantilist system. Adam Smith is a devout supporter of the physiocratic system. He thinks that this economic system can help countries achieve real wealth. First of all, it is important to add that, according to Adam Smith, real wealth is the country’s land and people who produce goods (Smith 168). The philosopher believes that natural resources are the greatest wealth of any country, and it is crucial to manage them properly. As has been mentioned above, Smith opposed the idea of export. According to the physiocratic system, it is necessary to invest in and develop the economy of the country rather than export goods (Smith 170). Development of the economy leads to an increase in jobs and wealth of people. Finally, according to the physiocratic system, governmental control cannot be applied to the development of the economy. Adam Smith stresses that there is natural law, and the economy follows this law. Any control can interfere in the natural course of development of the economy, and it will have negative effects (Smith 171). One of the principles of natural law can illustrate the effectiveness of the system. Thus, it is natural that a person will grow plants if he/she knows that he/she will get the crop. Otherwise, people will not work hard and will not try to get better results as they will not get the results of their labor. However, governmental control often means that the country takes all the results, and people have almost nothing. Of course, this situation leads to deterioration of the economy as people do not work hard enough, do not produce goods, and do not benefit from the country’s wealth (natural resources). In conclusion, it is possible to note that Adam Smith supported the physiocratic system, which he associated with progress and prosperity. Globalisation and technological changes have also opened new avenues to Mauritians which were previously unavailable to them. It is becoming a society where women are coming out of the private spheres of the home into the public sphere of the economy and politics. Nevertheless while having adapted to the new economic opportunities, there has been an increase in the participation of women in the formal wage. The proportions of women in workforce in Mauritius from year 2009-2012 have increased considerably from 18,500 to 191,600 (Economic Social Indicators, statistics Mauritius). Women have benefited significantly from the upgrading of their economic status but at the same time have succumbed to stresses and strains of coping with their new roles in the ‘new age’ society. Moreover, The White Paper on Women in Development emphasises on the increasing employment of women in the labour market and the greater sense of individuality and how freedom felt by women themselves have brought about positive development. Such being the case, it is too much of a glorification to say that this reflects the changing roles of women in the Mauritian society. 1.2 Woman’s triple role within the family Women play a very crucial role within the family and the society. They are the pillar of the house and they accordingly contribute in sustaining the family. Thus, women are associated with the triple role of productive (work outside the home), reproductive which is related to household tasks associated with children and family and community management. Goods and services are increasingly being bought and consumed – houses, cars, furniture and education. Hence, the highly materialistic world demands that both husband and wife go out to work. The controversy is that women would then contribute to the family budget while men would not contribute to the household work. The result is that less time is spent in the family. At times, children are unattended and social problems crop up leading to instability and turbulence in the family. 1.4 Changing status of women across times The main thing today is that there has been a gradual improvement in the status of women. They have indeed achieved more political equality with men and they have equal rights in education. Most types of job are suitable for women today. Equal opportunity act has helped discard discrimination. The ‘Economic Miracle’ of Mauritius is largely dependent on the growth of the manufacturing sector which was introduced in 1970s. It has been the main engine of economic development in Mauritius and has absorbed large numbers of unemployed labour. The traditional women who were uneducated represented a fundamental pool of labour for the industrialists. The new ‘economic leverage’ has welcomed the earning of second salary amidst the family. Everyone at all levels of society is becoming aware of the stress families face these days so as to struggle to balance their responsibilities at home and at work. This is evidenced from the fact that too often families have to choose between the demands of work and family, elderly parents and relatives. In Mauritius the two demographic trends in the increase participation rates for working mothers and dual-career couples have a profound effect on the spheres of work and family. It is generally recognized that the extensive pressure arising from work environment and from family environment can produce high-levels of work-family conflict for many employees. In brief, development is good for any country but at the same time it has added extra burden on women particularly balancing the conflicting demands of family life and career. 1.5 Functionalist perspectives on work and family According to functionalist, families are living in a post modern way of living which is very good for the society as they prefer not to have children because of their career and some prefer to stay-single and they are going according to the needs of the society. P and B Bergers argue that the bourgeois family already teaches children what the society want for instance, strict moral values and value economic success. E.Leach (1996) argues that the Nuclear family is stressed. They are exploited by the capitalist and they are alienated; they work because they have no choice. Family are nowadays privatized, they do not want people to know what is happening in their yard. 1.6 Problem statement It is principally through the family that social values and knowledge are transmitted from generation to generation and hence this reinforces the social fabrics. Like any other country, the Mauritian’s Government is playing a fundamental role in trying to maintain the balance between work and family life. If the family is stable, this will have a direct impact on the society and hence on the country. On one hand, the family life in Mauritius is being eroded in the face of the demands of work and increasingly long hours in at work. Practically, many members of the Mauritian family return home after work at different times and the traditional family meals that were customary in the past, are now reserved for weekends. Many parents strive to find time to spend with their children during the working week. The twin pressures of work and family life are raising stress levels within the home and creating much pressure. Parents are struggling to fit all their chores into shorter time frames because of lack of time. Due, to the constraint of time imposed by work schedule, various social problems have cropped up. Infact there is increasing divorce rate (0.47 per 1000 people) and going by this, it is assumed that children are having recourse to drug, alcohol and cigarette smoking. On the other hand, despite the so called equality of sexes advocated by feminists, it is seen that the responsibility of looking after the family relies mostly on women. Hence, housework and looking after children remain predominantly “women’s work”. Women’s works have been marginalised throughout the history. Women are more likely to concentrate on their work than family.
