Carl Sandburg – Chicago

American poet Carl Sandburg was also a novelist, folklorist and a historian. He was born on January 6, 1878 in Galesburg Illinois. He participated in the Spanish War. He moved to Chicago to work as a journalist and in 1914, his poetry was published in poetry magazine. He had well received free verse poetry and which focused on the American workers. He also collected folksongs in to books and he later wrote a bibliography about Abraham Lincoln which led him to wining Pulitzer Prize.

Carl Sandburg used multiple poetic elements in his written work “Chicago”. In the poem, he lists many qualities which the city of Chicago has, both aesthetic and industrial. He notes the works happening in Chicago and he explains the city as stormy, brawling and husky, showing that it was loud, big and busy and full of action.

After this, he goes ahead and addresses the city critics through providing answers to the concerns, admitting that Chicago has its problems; as people Call it “wicked”, “brutal” and “cruel” and agrees that in some ways, that is how the city is. Acknowledging that issues like murder, hunger, prostitution and a legal system which never works the way it is supposed to work, exists in Chicago.

Sandburg further ends up tackling the bad side Chicago must overcome and shares the things which he finds interesting about the City, saying that he would “sneer” at anybody who sneers at Chicago as it was alive and vibrant. He admires the people’s work and the magnificence of building the city. Characterizing Chicago as “ignorant” and “young”, and which shows that even if it is faulty, it is also emergent and a vibrant city something which is mature and healthy.

Sandburg finishes by describing Chicago in two ways; as a proud young city and as a commercial hub.

The time Sandburg wrote the poem on Chicago, it was 1914, the city had been established as a city in 1833, and this was about 70 years. This being quite young when compared to other world cities and that is why he describes it as a little man, being quite new although it existed for some time.

He uses metaphors to compare the city; Sandburg shows how the town possesses a lot of similar qualities as an adolescent young man, both active and vibrant, but both also having many flaws. However, Sandburg wants his readers to understand that in spite of the flaws, there is much to admire about how Chicago continue to grow.

Sandburg also focuses on commerce as a theme. The city was major as it was the Midwest center to the States in west. Chicago merchants and farmers transported their goods to the East and West through the rail road’s and any person going from West to east (or vice versa) have at least to stop at Chicago along their way.

Sandburg also acknowledges many types of staff who assisted the city in growing, he wants his readers to know how important the town is and as in the case of a lively modern economy.

In describing the poem, Sandburg relies on strategies of similes and metaphors. He uses the strategies in comparing the City of Chicago with a young man and in this manner, he can clearly state some of the qualities which the city posses. It is young and immature, but it is also vibrant and firm (Greene & Jack, 2015).

W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963):  Ahead of the Curve and An Intellectual of Changing Times

W.E.B. Du Bois was not merely one of the first African American intellectuals, but his theories of art and difference continue to shape culture to this day. Du Bois was interested in the idea of consciousness.  His notion of consciousness is more in keeping with what highly spiritual people today regard as the correct definition: to have a proper perspective with reality, to be mindful of all things, to concern oneself with proper action, to live in right relationship with all of life, and to create art is to be inspired by the divine.  Du Bois believed that society was broken when it did not aspire toward unity.  In his time (some would argue that even today) social problems went hand in hand with the color of one’s skin, and that also meant the opportunities for education and jobs—social mobility—were part and parcel of being Black in America in the early 20th century. 

Du Bois’ research taught him that white racism was the predominant reason for much of the Black American population’s social, economic, and political difficulties, hence, much of Du Bois’ work sought to help Black Americans deal with blatant and hidden racism.  Yet, it is Du Bois’ ideas about how Black art could become the uplifting force for all of society is what shines as well about this amazing scholar.

Du Bois has some similarities to Plato for both philosophers thought that the oral tradition is best.  Both scholars believed that it is difficult for anyone to know themselves, others, and the world simply by trusting their own perceptions.
