Hey guys, I am currently at work and cannot get this assignment done. Here are some of the instructions. Please help me! Today, you will be examining a dissected squid (Illex illecebrosus), which belongs to the class Cephalopoda.Begin by examining the external anatomy. Cephalopods are large protostomes distinguished by their prehensile tentacles, which are an outgrowth of the head. Count the number of arms present on the squid. There should be eight short arms and two long arms. Other than length, do you notice any other differences between the short arms and the long arms? You should notice that the long arms, also called tentacles, have suction cups (suckers) only on the ends. These suckers have “teeth” present on the cups. The tentacles are used to capture food by striking out and grasping prey items. Once the tentacles capture the prey, the squid reels the prey in and holds it, using the eight short arms. The eight short arms also function to bring the prey item to the mouth.Apply it: Explain how the suction cup structure you observed earlier relates to these functions.Except for the chambered nautilus, cephalopods have a reduced internal shell (referred to as a pen). At this point in the dissection, we cannot see the pen. Given the lack of an external shell, the mantle is a mobile, stream-lined structure that covers the visceral mass. Examine the mantle of the squid that encloses the main part of the squid body. The mantle should be dotted with chromatophores, pigment containing cells. Chromatophores function as a mechanism of communication, for example, to attract mates or scare predators. See if you can locate the chromatophores, it may be difficult given the preservative. At the dorsal end of the mantle, you should see two fins. These fins allow the squid to maneuver through the water as they stabilize and propel the squid. Notice the hydrodynamic shape of the squid.Apply it: Explain how the hydrodynamic shape of the squid helps it maneuver in the water.Cephalopods are active swimmers that move with the contraction of muscles in the mantle. The muscular foot has been modified into a siphon that extends from the mantle cavity. Water can be taken into the mantle cavity and forcibly expelled through the siphon for movement; moreover, the siphon can also be used to dictate the direction of movement. The siphon also functions for waste removal. Position the squid so that the posterior side is facing up and we can search for a short, deflated, fleshy tube at the base of the head. This is the siphon. After water flows into the mantle, muscles close off the mantle so that water can only leave through the siphon. Then, as the muscles of the mantle wall contract, the water is squeezed out of the siphon at such a high force that it propels the squid. The siphon is very flexible. This flexibility allows the squid to propel in many directions. Now that we have examined the external anatomy of the squid, let’s look inside. First, we will position the squid so that you can get a closer look at the mouth. The mouth is located within the circle of arms, so we will need to pull apart the arms to reveal it. The mouth of a squid is really a beak, and, just like a bird’s beak, it has two halves. The beak functions to tear food into small pieces. The beak is wrapped in the buccal mass, a muscular encasing. The beak is hard and pointy. Within the beak, is the radula, a tongue-like, toothed structure that helps shred the food for easier digestion. Using forceps and the blunt probe, we can gently remove the buccal mass. Once removed, the buccal mass may have a long, thin tube attached. This is the esophagus, that connects to the stomach. If you do not see the esophagus attached to the buccal mass, then it is still inside the squid. Now, we will orient the squid so the posterior side is facing up. Starting at the siphon, we use scissors to carefully cut down the middle of the squid’s mantle until the center point at the end of the fins. We then spread the sides of the mantle and pin them open.Typically, the most noticeable internal structures of the squid are associated with the reproductive system. Gonads are located near the fins, either testes in males or ovaries in females. A male’s testes will contain sperm that appear white and cloudy, while a female’s ovaries will contain eggs that appear yellowish or clear and feel like Jell-O™.Now backtrack to the siphon. Do you notice the two large masses extending from the siphon? These are the siphon retractor muscles that aid in waste removal and jet propulsion. These structures are tough and firm compared to other organs of the squid.In addition to jet propulsion to escape from predators, squids use ink as a defense against predators. Ink is squirted through the siphon, just like waste and water, from the mantle cavity. Locate a structure that looks like a small silvery tube, or thin black line, near the intestine – this is the ink sac. Our external examination of the squid provided a snapshot of the digestive system. After the beak and radula tear and shred the food, it moves through the esophagus. If the esophagus was not removed when you removed buccal mass, you should see a thin tube running from the mouth region down the mantle cavity “through” the squid’s brain. Squids are considered intelligent invertebrates. Their brain consists of bundles of nerves that are fused together, just between the eyes. The brain is surrounded by cartilage.At the end of the esophagus, you should see the stomach, a small oval structure. Most food digestion occurs in this organ. Connected to the stomach is the cecum. If you are having difficulty locating the cecum, look closely near the gonads. The cecum receives digested food from the stomach. Waste products leave the cecum through the intestine, a long tube which ends at the anus. The anus of a squid runs into the siphon where waste is released.Now, explore the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. There should be feathery structures on each side of the mantle, these are the gills. The gills may appear white or a dark reddish-brown. Gills are the site of gas exchange, enabling squids to respire (i.e., breathe). As water enters the mantle, it bathes the gills with oxygen-rich water, allowing for up-take of oxygen into the bloodstream. Later, the deoxygenated water is removed via the siphon. Squids have three hearts: one responsible for pumping oxygenated blood from the gills to the body (systemic heart) and two located at the base of each set of gills responsible for returning deoxygenated blood from the body to the gills (branchial heart).

Ensuring they are increasing their fluid intake (including cranberry juice to help fight a UTI) and then closely monitoring them for the next 24-48 hours will tell what the next step is. The extra fluids may have helped the UTI resolve and saved the patient from being put on antibiotics. If the patient is still having symptoms a urine test can be ordered.
