Forensic evaluations are required in a variety of criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings in order to clarify psychological issues as they relate to legal issues. Forensic evaluations are distinct from clinical evaluations because the relationship is evaluator-evaluee instead of doctor-patient, which implies unique practical and ethical considerations. Different evaluations require distinct methodologies. This assignment is designed to familiarize you with some key categories of forensic evaluation and prompt you to study a particular methodology in more detail. These evaluations are very characteristic of the types performed by forensic psychologists.
Instructions
For your final paper in this course, you will submit a forensic evaluation. In this assignment, you will summarize four types of forensic evaluation and select one methodology to examine in more detail. You may choose this particular methodology from the following four types of forensic evaluations:
Competency to confess (that is, waive Miranda rights).
Sanity at the time of the offense charged (insanity).
Independent medical evaluation (IME) for psychological damages.
Juvenile court evaluation for amenability to treatment.
