The hardware stores who buy at small quantities will perform resale at a marked up price to end users such as plumbers, small contractors, and others. However, it is not beneficial to the manufacturers should they cheat. This is because the hardware stores have a significant buyer power towards the manufacturers. Should the end user go directly to the manufacturer, the manufacturer must charge higher than hardware shop selling price. This is because if they lower it, and should the hardware store finds out, the supplier might lose the hardware store as a customer. As mentioned earlier, hardware stores are the major buyers so a good relationship must be kept with them. With that said, the market described seems to be a monopolistic competition.
This is because there are many firms in the market, due to the low entry level, which makes the price competitive and the demand relatively elastic. There is product differentiation and some level of capital is required. Most importantly, firms are able to achieve some level of price control. The hardware stores control the price towards manufacturers and end users, but to an extent only. This is because if the hardware stores are also competing amongst themselves. With that, the price will not be too controlled by them.
The above mentioned scenario can be modelled as equilibrium between supply (manufacturer) and demand (hardware stores) (See Appendix V). This fixes the price at some level which benefits both parties at the equilibrium. Examples are either plastic materials (PP, PVC, ABS, etc. ) or conventional pipe materials (steel, ductile iron, concrete, etc. ). So it can be said that plastic pipes are actually the substitutes of conventional piping materials.
