In the Theaetetus, Plato offers an image of the philosopher modeled around Thales

In the Theaetetus, Plato offers an image of the philosopher modeled around Thales.

Choose one of the prompts:

1. In the Theaetetus, Plato offers an image of the philosopher modeled around Thales. Thales, while being skilled and knowledgeable in many domains, appears completely oblivious of the circumstances of life. Such dichotomy between life and thought appears to inform both the philosophical tradition and some satirical works, as Aristophanes’ play The Clouds. Is such distinction still present in our intellectual practice and does it appear productive?

2. The first philosophers, the pre-Socratic or natural philosophers, were interested in finding in Nature the first principles for the entirety of human experience and for the existence of the universe. Plato operates a displacement of such first principles, which cannot be found in nature anymore but outside of it, in the realm of pure ideas. Adriana Cavarero, in her feminist reading of Plato, considers this displacement and reads the laughter of the young Thracian slave as a form of resistance or contestation of it. How can we understand such critique of the foundation of the philosophical tradition and of Western culture? What does this critique allow us to think, and how does it inform our understanding of traditional philosophical text?

3. Parmenides ideas of being and not being seems to negate human experience altogether. Between being and non-being there is, indeed, no space left for becoming. Parmenides’ teaching is very important for Plato and we can trace his influential thoughts in Platonic texts. However, Plato’s philosophy is not quite as radical. Plato is interested in maintaining the world of experience and tries to describe it with analogies and allegories. Moreover, it is important for Plato to consider the relationship between the world of ideas and human experience. What are the characteristics of this middle world in which humanity dwells? Is it a convincing and useful position to think about ourselves as a mixture of body and soul, of being and not-being? What kind of implication does this distinction carry with itself?

4. Could we read the Cave Allegory in Plato’s Republic as the point of convergence of Plato’s metaphysics and politics? What is the role of education in such narration? Can we learn to contemplate ideas? Wasn’t educating in matters of life and wisdom the trade of the Sophists, Socrates’ enemies? Is the idea of reminiscence, as it is described in the Phaedo, a convincing doctrine?

5. Socrates while facing his trial defends himself against the accusations of corrupting the youth and of disrespecting the gods. Socrates’ defends himself by showing that his contribution to the city is worth reward rather than punishment. What is Socrates argument? Can we conclude that, indeed, in order to be really happy we have to examine our lives and ourselves?

6. Aristotle’s philosophical method shifts from an interest in abstract notions of justice and virtue into a more empirical approach. According to Aristotle we need to observe the reality around us. What are the strengths and the limits of basing a political doctrine on mere observation?

7. Aristotle defines humans as political animals because of their capacity to speak. What is the role of speech in his analysis, and why is it related to a natural dimension? Should what nature offers to our gazes, to our capacity of understanding, and of observing, dictate our lives and political commitments? 8. Contract theorists like Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau base their idea of civil society in analysis of human nature. Each philosopher considers the role of Nature as dictating the necessary steps for creating the best possible society. How can we describe the differences between the three thinkers in respect to this point? What are the limitations and the strengths of their positions? Can we accept their philosophies and all the implications they carry, in our society? 9. What are the implications of Locke’s philosophical positions in the history of the United States? Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz considers that a religious, cultish dimension informs the relationship between this country and its constitution. Is such dimension problematic? How can we understand the creation of a founding myth and its use in politics in light of Dunbar-Ortiz critique?
