This assignment is an introduction to observing and analyzing behavior/development. It has 2 parts: 1. Watch this video During the video- Complete the Observation part of the Running Record, record only what you see happening, not what you “think” you are seeing (no bias). You might have to watch the video several times. Focus on only one of the boys. Do not write the running record on all of them, just choose one and write down only what he is doing and saying in the video. 2. Write a Running Record. Write the running record according to the method discussed previously. Setting- List the name, age, date, setting. (actual name is not necessary but an alias will make it easier when writing about the child and you can make an educated guess about the age of the child) (1-2 sentences long). Observation- This section gets completed when you are watching the video. Make sure you make an unbiased observation and think critically about what you are seeing. During the video, observe the preschooler and record a running narrative of him/her. Do this while watching the video. Be as descriptive and objective as possible. Write down exact actions, behaviors, and language as they occur in time. Everything he/she does must be recorded (as much as possible). This section must be recorded as objectively as possible. You should not include your judgments, this occurs in the comments section. (this section should be at least one page long). Comments/Analysis- When you have completed the observation, write your comments about the child. These will be your judgments concerning his/her development. What do you think is going on? (1/2 to 1 page). *The Running Record can be written as a narrative or bulleted form or as a chart.
