I am arguing that “Dumbo” is a book that brings forth many politics and aesthetics of anthropomorphism. I have a couple of points I want to expand upon, such as:

Anthropomorphism in the book and movie
Focus on the movie, with the occasional reference to one or more of the book versions of “Dumbo.” There is a lot going on in the movie, including some problematic racial politics so that to do justice to the movie. Need to look at anthropomorphism in the movie through several lenses rather than one, tailoring back to the main argument. Research material needs to be connected to the actual text. May use Google Scholar, JSTOR, Project Muse to find secondary sources.

 Why do people commit crime? This question has challenged researchers for centuries. The three main bodies of criminological thought suggest that sociological, psychological and/or biological factors are to blame. Within each of these 3 vast fields, however, reside numerous theoretical explanations for criminal behavior. More interdisciplinary approaches to criminological thought suggest that the study of motives for criminal behavior involve input from multiple schools of thought. Sociological explanations involve societal factors as the cause of crime. The impacts of poverty, peer pressure, social structure, power differentials, and other social impacts are proposed to influence the likelihood that one will engage in crime. Changing criminal behavior requires changing the society in which an individual lives. Psychological explanations look more toward the inner mental processes of the individual who commits crime. One’s development, from infancy throughout life, is proposed to influence one’s likelihood of engaging in crime. Earlier biological explanations of crime were primitive by today’s standards. For instance, early researchers examined body types to assess propensity for criminal behavior. The insufficiency of early biological explanations and lack of scientific knowledge of biological issues led researchers to largely abandon the study of biological explanations of crime for some time. Recently, however, as medical science has progressed, researchers are revisiting the impact of biological factors on criminal behavior. With the technology to closely examine and take measurements of a living brain over time, researchers are again focusing on the relationship between biology and crime, particularly on brain activities and body chemistry. The concept of “free will” is of great significance to criminal justice. Our society holds individuals accountable for a crime if prosecutors prove they knowingly engaged in illegal activity. However, the term “knowingly” has been the subject of much debate. Sometimes one’s intent to commit a crime is difficult to prove, because intentions are not always blatantly obvious. Legal scholars and others often speculate about intent, leading to much controversy in the courts. As discussed in the article “Neuroscience and the Law,” the implications of studying the brain can help alleviate some of this controversy, yet simultaneously generate new concerns. The ethical and legal implications of understanding the relationship between the brain and human behavior are notable. For instance, understanding how deficiencies in the brain impact violent tendencies will assist the courts as they attempt to define terms such as “knowingly” and “intent”, yet from a crime prevention perspective, would it be ethical to closely monitor those with similar deficiencies even though they haven’t broken the law? In other words, if we know, based on the examination of one’s brain, that an individual is predisposed to violence, should we cautiously monitor his or her behavior? Strong arguments could be made that violent tendencies do not necessarily result in criminal behavior. Many boxers and football players have made a living from violence. Furthermore, identifying and labeling individuals as “likely to engage in violence” may perpetuate their violent tendencies. On the other hand, wouldn’t such information provide a viable crime prevention tool?
