Nursing Culture

Culture can be seen as both structural and dynamic. Dynamic in sense which cultures emerge in a complex interaction of the human behavior, and structural in the sense that these interactions produce specific structures or patterns, which again, influences the interactions themselves; nursing has always been a heavily dominated female profession, even at the 21st century. The nursing culture has been demanding an analysis which has taken stereotypical conception, models, and myths into account, as it influences strongly the way the nursing culture has been evolving and taking shape. Invisible and visible power has closely been associated to the everyday nursing practice. The power can be identified as a capacity or a relation. Traditionally, nurses were subservient to the administration and physicians and were regarded as assistants and handmaidens. Even today, the nursing profession remains to be the largest group when it comes to health care profession; it has remained to be relatively powerless (Henderson & Fletcher, 2015).

In the recent past, nursing has been focusing on illness and it has adopted a nursing and medicine language which has perpetuated and complemented the medical work. It has been experiencing a refreshing and disentitling transformation, as seen in most academic circles. Nursing culture has been experiencing huge paradigm shifts and struggles to consistently demonstrate such shifts in its practical arena. To be accepted as true professionals, nursing has established roles as scientists, scholars, theorists, and artist; in articulating their uniqueness in the body of knowledge, together with exhibiting their abilities of activeness and power in the roles they play as teachers, health promoters and client advocates.

Language and Behaviors

In nursing, effective communication is crucial to health care as clinical skill. Language is the basis of the nursing culture and it is critical when it comes to the nursing behavior. It is also essential for the development of the nursing culture as it allows the nurse experiences to be cumulative thus giving the nurses the capacity to share their understanding together with developing common future perceptions. It provides a complex, shared, goal oriented behaviors.

Attitudes and Beliefs

Nurses are responsible to providing their clients with the highest quality care. They are always confronted with complex concerns in their profession. Ethical codes are the fundamental guidelines in the complex roles in patient care, research, education and management of the healthcare systems. The codes give an outline about how the nurses should ethically behave and ways of handling barriers and challenges when encountered. Such ethics may include providing care to patients with respect to the human rights, socio-cultural traditions, beliefs and values of the client (Jeffreys, 2015).

Values and Interest

Based on the humanistic nature in the nursing profession, the nursing common values should be shaped in a way which they protect human dignity and respect to the clients. Ethical knowledge is essential in nursing culture especially when conducting appropriate functions in situation management and providing proper and safe ethical care in the today’s dynamic world.

Education and Trainings

Healthcare professionals especially nurses must keep up to date with the latest advances and knowledge concerning the health care. The continuing education gives effectiveness in improving the patient outcomes, healthcare, and also the community health as a whole. The trainings and certification involved ensures that there is;

Validation of individual competence and practice,

Provision of new knowledge together with skill acquisition,

Identification of performance gaps,

Improvement in the patient outcome, and

Generation of professional satisfaction and identity in preventing burnout.

Tools and Equipment used

Tools are invaluable aspect in nursing, ranging from simple to most sophisticated machines, which may require advanced training to operate. This will depend on the nursing specialty and the varying tasks concerned with each. The exits no one list of the equipments which a nurse is supposed to use, however, there are similar groupings of the equipments used in daily basis by the nurses. All that will depend on the level of responsibility and the kind of facility they work in.

Interactions with others

Lack of team work and communication may be the leading factor for errors occurring in the nursing profession. Such errors result to severe injuries to the clients leading to even unexpected patient deaths. Team work as part of interactions with others in the nursing profession is encouraged as nurses are able to share responsibilities, work together in making of decisions and problem solving in formulating and carrying out plans in regard to the patient care.

Healthy nursing culture empowers the stakeholders to identify with the team and their efforts as integral to the team’s success. Creating caring culture in nursing offers a way and resources to clinical leaders to work effectively with their staff and take a positive step towards the provision of better nursing care (Trobec & Starcic, 2015).
