Towards the start of the play, Macbeth, was perceived as a noble person who led his soldiers to victory. In Act 1 scene II, King Duncan asks a wounded Sergeant about the battle with the Irish, the Sergeant responds by saying they have won the battle due the bravery of both Macbeth and Banquo. Here noble Macbeth is seen as brave general who the King wants to now make him Thane of Cawdor. In this scene Shakespeare sets the stage for a tragic hero by initially depicting Macbeth as a noble and superior character in the play.

Macbeth is significantly influenced by the prophecies that foretell the future and ue to his overpowering ambition for power he is unable to keep the superstition from corrupting him. The “weird sisters” bring a sense of corruption and evil to the play. Their dialogue is reads in a completely different rhythm than the other character. In the first scene of the play the chant “fair is foul, and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air” (1 . 1). This quote which ends off the first scene leaves an eerie mood to come give the audience a sense that evil is to come.

The evil and corruption that the “weird sisters” bring to the play helps lead to Macbeth’s ambition nd greed, which aids to his demise as a tragic hero. In Act 1 Scene Ill, Macbeth and Banquo are confronted by the three witches who proclaim the prophecy that Macbeth was to be the Thane of Cawdor and be the King thereafter. Once Macbeth hears sight of the fact he has the potential to become Thane of Cawdor and King he was surprised to hear this and was in disbelieve as he says: ” But how of Cawdor? The thane of Cawdor lives… and to be king stands not within the prospect of belief. ” (1. 3).

Later in the scene Ross enters and he names Macbeth Thane of Cawdor ust as the witches had predicted. From this point onwards Macbeth changes as a character. This scene is the mark where his ambition now takes over as he feels the rest of the prophecy must come true and he will do what he can to make it happen. Thereafter he relies of the prophecy brought to him by the witches to foretell the future. Ultimately, Macbeth now will use superstition as a mark to make decisions on his life. As Lady Macbeth hears of the prophecy and the chance for her husband to become King she pushes him to act.

She convinces Macbeth to act on the prophecy o become King and not wait for it to happen. Lady Macbeth proves to be very ambitious women. As Macbeth believed he had to kill Duncan he was hesitant and felt it was not right. Lady Macbeth repeatedly questions Macbeth’s manhood. She goes on to say that she kill Duncan herself: “you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, she says that she is not able to kill Duncan when he was sleeping becomes it reminded of her father. Leading up to Duncan’s death Lady Macbeth dominated Macbeth convincing him to not back off and complete the deed. After the murder of

Duncan, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s relationship was forever changed. As they become King and Queen their ambition shifts to remaining on the throne and through their paranoid behavior decide to murder anyone who has a chance of taking that from theme. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth start the play off as a loving couple who show affection and go to each other for different advice. After the murder of Duncan they lose their close relationship. The goodness of having a devoted relationship is lost due to Macbeth obsession to go gain power. Lady Macbeth begins to become mad and slowly destroys her.

Macbeth begins to lose his companion as his ambition to remain as King overrides his attention to his relationship with his wife. The many murders that were com mitted keep Macbeth as king destroyed Lady Macbeth with propelling her to have visions and sleepwalk and eventually commit suicide. As Macbeth heard of the news that his wife had died he merely shrugged it off and is solely concerned with preparing for war with Macduff. His paranoia and ambition to remain as King overwhelmed him enough to not take as much caution and time to prevent his wife’s suicide or at least show grief hat his companion had died.

This tragic flaw of selfish behavior to remain as King dominated everything good in his life. It completely destroys him and leads to eventual death as tragic hero. The witches did instill the prophecies in Macbeth and Lady Macbeth which did help convince him to conduct in such acts of greed; although it was ultimately Macbeth and his tragic flaw of overwhelming ambition for power that drowned out his nobility as a tragic hero. The witches did not state that Macbeth needed to murder Duncan to become King, but Macbeth saw it as the astest way to attain it.

The witches’ prophecies foretold that Macbeth would initially become the Thane of Cawdor, but he would have been awarded Thane due to his victorious prior feats. As for Lady Macbeth who did manipulate him to go through with the killing of Duncan himself, it was originally his idea to do so. The witches and Lady Macbeth were indeed strong forces in the demise of Macbeth, although it was more importantly his impatient desire for total power that overwhelmed his preliminary noble traits. As Macbeth relied on superstition to fuel his ambitions and eep from ending.

He allows himself to place his aspiration on superstition to remain King how reasonable it may or not be. Macbeth possesses the rise and fall nature that comes with being a tragic hero. He enters as noble general and ends the play corrupted and thereafter deceased. His emotional relationship with his wife began as a strong bond and was destroyed by their incapacity to cope with power and ambition. Macbeth’s tragic flaw of overwhelming ambition, coupled with the influence of the prophecies and the manipulation of his wife lead to a depiction of a tragic hero.
