” Once you have done that, following these directions:*** 1) Pick 6 of your favorite songs and talk about them similarly to the sample. Talk about things you like, dislike – and have reasons to support what you are typing. 2) Use time-coding. This means when you are at a point of the song that you really like/dislike – tell us where it is in the song so that we know exactly the moment you are talking about (for example at 2:22 of “Old Town Road” I liked the bass drop…) This will make it easier for everyone to follow what you are commenting about. 3) After you are done with your six-song review – give me an overall review of the entire album as a whole. If you love it give the album 5 stars. If you hate it – give it 1 star. Be sure to give a reason why you rated it the way you did. Additionally, since we are learning about a new genre each week, I would like you to explain what you learned about the genre and what characteristics set it apart from other popular genres. 4) Respond to another student’s review using at least 100 words. I want this to be an opportunity for everyone in the class to communicate about music and hopefully have quality discussions about whatever album we are listening to that week. You can write as many responses to as many different students as you would like – but you must at least do ONE. This week we will be reviewing “The Low-End Theory” by A Tribe Called Quest (released in 1991). I will go ahead and place a slight “Parental Advisory” sticker on this assignment. There might be some language on this record that you might find offensive but I guarantee you that you have heard these words before. This album is an excellent representation the genre of Rap/Hip-Hop/Jazz and many of the artists (including Tribe) in this genre use street slang, coarse language, and talk about themes that might make you uncomfortable. What you must understand is that the rap genre represents, in many cases, the difficulty of growing up in neighborhoods that are dangerous, where many of the themes discussed in rap music are/were a reality to the artists speaking about them. Instead of focusing on something you might find shocking or uncomfortable about this record, consider the ways that artists like A Tribe Called Quest have been an inspiration to other people growing up in similar circumstances around the world. Additionally, this particular rap album fuses hip-hop with jazz, and even features Ron Carter (legendary bass player for Miles Davis, and many others) on upright bass for the track “Verses from the Abstract.” This is an important feature that Tribe wanted to call attention to since rap is very much improvisatory like jazz improvisation. Both genres of music (rap and jazz) are deeply rooted within the black community, and a fusion of both genres, like you will hear in the record, pays tribute to the artists that came before, while boldly looking ahead to new musical avenues. I look forward to reading your reviews and hearing your responses to the complex rhyme schemes and wordsmith-like vocabulary that the members of Tribe use in this landmark Rap album. = Email me with any questions – have a wonderful week!
