Kilgore College History Impact of Television on Society Discussion.

Your textbook reading discusses the dramatic increase in the numbers of people watching television in 1950s America. It didn’t take long for experts to become concerned about the impact television made on American society. For an example read the following 1955 U.S. Senate report which examined whether or not television shows were causing a spike in the juvenile crime rate in 1950s America: http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/6559. Read the report and see what the committee concluded. Much like today, Americans half a century ago were concerned about the impact the new invention was making on their young people. Of course, today we Americans watch far more television than Americans did in the 1950s.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:(1) Based on your textbook reading assignment, what changes in American society, culture, and politics in the 1950s may have provoked these concerns about the impact of television on society?(2) What did the authors of the 1955 U.S. Senate report conclude about the effects of television on the American people?(3) Do you think television today makes a more positive or negative impact on American society OVERALL? Explain your answer.

It is important that you cover all the topics identified in the assignment. Covering the topic does not mean mentioning the topic BUT presenting an explanation from the context of ethics and the readings for this class I am a stickler for good organization in everything. I do not want to have to dig for your answers. For instance, if an assignment asks you to provide three examples of something, I suggest that you number them 1-3 so I can find them easily. I also expect that when you submit something as a narrative, you pay attention to how you organize your thoughts: use paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences; and change paragraphs whenever you introduce a new idea. Also, if there are multiple parts to an assignment, use sub-heads within the paper to organize them. To get maximum points you need to follow the requirements listed for this assignments 1) look at the word/page limits 2) review and follow APA rules 3) create subheadings to identify the key sections you are presenting and 4) Free from typographical and sentence construction errors. The Role of the Financial Manager Essay

Whether or not Chief Financial Officers can make good Chief Executive Officers is difficult to define. Recent trends in business suggest that more CFOs are willing to land in the CEO’s chair. Simultaneously, more companies choose former CFOs to become their CEOs, hoping that the latter will improve their financial and strategic performance. However, not everything is easy with the CFOs who want to become CEOs. Financial experience may add rigor to future CEOs’ decisions and achievements, but finance departments are not always the best place to train Chief Executive Officers. Only CFOs who broaden their outlook, reconsider business issues from multiple perspectives, and develop excellent relations with people will have a chance to excel as chief executives. More Chief Financial Officers want to become CEOs. They have sufficient education and experience to manage financial affairs. They possess a perfect understanding of the financial processes affecting firms’ strategic performance. U.S. and international businesses know numerous examples of successful CFO-CEO transformations. In 1985, D. Wayne Calloway became PepsiCo’s President (Picker, 1989). That was the time when cash flows in PepsiCo were so low that the company had to borrow money, in order to pay dividends (Picker, 1989). In less than four years, PepsiCo would become one of the most profitable food manufacturing giants (Picker, 1989). The knowledge and financial experience of the new CEO became the foundation of the company’s success in the food manufacturing industry. Other companies followed PepsiCo’s example. In 2005, after the 2000-2001 energy crisis in California, the $11 billion investor-owned PG

Family Social Institution

term paper help EXPLAIN THE MAIN WAYS IN WHICH THE CONCEPT OF THE FAMILY HAS CHANGED OVER TIME AND ACROSS CULTURES Family is regarded as a major social institution by many sociologists; it is a place where much of a person’s social activities occur. The concept of the family is considered as a social unit or a group of kin connected by blood, marriage or adoption, living in the same residence and can be described as nuclear (a family structure made of parents and their children) or extended (a family structure made up of three generations for example grandparents, parents and children). The extended family is associated with the pre- industrial society; parents were mainly responsible for the well-being and education of their children. This type of family unit was the main source of production and due to extended kinship; families used to own for example large agricultural land or farms and would trade for other resources like clothes with other families. The nuclear family on the other hand is considered by sociologists to be the typical type of family structure in an industrial society. Because it consists of fewer members than the extended family it makes it easier for them to relocate to industrial areas where their labour and skills are in popular demand. Graham Allan and Graham Crow argued that there was no longer a clear family cycle thorough which most people pass. They said, ‘individuals and families are now more able to exercise choice and personal volition over domestic and familial arrangements than previously, their option no longer being constrained by social convention and /or economic need. {Haralambos and Holborn (2004) pg 496} The main ways in which the concept of the family has changed over time and across cultures, is evident in both pre- industrialisation and industrialisation societies. In the past fifty years, family life has become increasingly diverse. High earnings and less responsibility to other family members have attracted extended families to split up. Families in the pre-industrial society had an important economic function in society but have lost its purpose as a production unit. However in the industrial society economic progress is taking place but the concept of the family is going through significant changes in its structure. A majority of women are employed, so fewer women are staying home to look after the family needs. Societal changes are believed to highly have contributed to the reduction of mainly the nuclear family. Divorce rates are very high across all cultures and a replacement of lone-parent, childless, remarried, homosexual, foster and adoptive families have been established. Breaking down of marriages, and anti-social behaviour is increasingly destroying families. People are increasingly cohabiting, in various industrial nations. Family life is no longer a picture of harmony and happiness. Socialists say that greater individualism with modern society has also had its contribution to the changes of the family structure. The transformation that is taking place in the traditional concept of family in diverse cultures is a big problem and some psychologists argue that it needs to be addressed, for any hope of retaining the family institution, especially the nuclear family. According to Murdock, “the nuclear family is the basic form of family. He sees all other family forms as extensions of the nuclear family”. {Harlambros M.
