Cofea is used and loved by many and used for edible consumption. But what is it about this plant that makes it so desirable? The special ingredient cofea contains Is caffeine.Cofea starts out as a seed that is planted in a preferably tropical climate, which then turns into a full cofea tree that can take 3-4 years (National Coffee Association of USA). Once the Cofea is a tree, the tree bears fruit. Cofea is harvested and picked by “selective picking “either by hand or a harvesting machine (National Coffee Association of USA). There are two different methods after the Cofea is picked. The dry method which is considered the “age-old method” as the Cofea is spread out on a large surface to dry naturally by the sun (National Coffee Association of USA). The wet method consists of using a pulp machine to separate the skin from the cofea bean. The lighter beans will float to the top and the heavier ones sink to the bottom and then transported into water-filled fermentation tanks (National Coffee Association of USA). “Cofea will remain in these tanks for anywhere from 12 to 48 hours to remove the slick layer of mucilage (called the parenchyma) that is still attached to the parchment. While resting in the tanks, naturally occurring enzymes will cause this layer to dissolve” (National Coffee Association of USA).This product is traced back to 100s of years to the forests of the Ethiopian plateau. There are multiple commercial farms for this plant especially in Central and South America (National Coffee Association of USA). The caffeine in Cofea helps people boost their energy. Although Cofea is used for our own beneficial reasons, it can also be used medicinally to help prevent many diseases as I will discuss two of them.The first major health benefits to drinking cofea is protection against type 2 diabetes” (Nordqvist, 2019). In 2014, researchers who gathered data on over 48,000 people found that those who increased their coffee consumption by at least one cup per day over 4 years had an 11% lower risk of type 2 diabetes than those who did not increase their intake” (Nordqvist, 2019).Research conducted on the benefits of cofea continued and reviewed people who were drinking 1 cup of cofea a day and smoking, helped control movement in those who have Parkinson’s disease (Nordqvist, 2019).Tea can be used as a substitute for cofea as it has caffeine as well. Apple cider vinegar can act as an energy booster as well with similar capabilities as cofea (McDonald, 2018)I really love cofea and when I was in Nicaragua, I visited a cofea field. More specifically the use of Cannabidiol or commonly known as CBD (Grinspoon, 2018).Cannabis sativa is commonly used as a recreational drug, but does have some medicinal properties. The use of medicinal marijuana and CBD has shown to alleviate or reduce chronic pain, reduce stress or anxiety and even reduce the occurrence of epilepsy seizures (Patel, 2018). This specific use is very important in my opinion as my younger sister has epilepsy and has been using CBD oil for the past two years to help reduce episodes. My mother also uses CBD for chronic back pain after falling at work. Now, Cannabidiol (CBD) does not get you “high” or produce hallucinogenic/psychoactive type feelings. The part of the Cannabis sativa that produces this phenomenon is called THC or tetrahydrocannabinol (Holland, 2019). This naturally occurring cannabinoid actually activates specific receptors in your brain and produces that “high” that some may desire. CBD actually does the complete opposite by blocking those same receptors in turn cancelling out any kind of high, or intoxication (Holland, 2019).Extraction of CBD from C. sativa or hemp plant is actually a pretty complex group of different processes where “carbon dioxide, steam distillation, and solvent extraction” (CBD Awareness Project, 2019). The main form of extraction using carbon dioxide involves a set of three pressurized chambers. The first chamber is pressurized and contains a combination of liquid and gas form of carbon dioxide, the second chamber contains the hemp or marijuana plant, and the third chamber is empty and is where the remaining Co2 and CBD oil product is deposited. It begins with chamber one pumping Co2 into chamber two with the plant. The pressurized Co2 breaks down the plant in the chamber, separating the plant from its oil. Finally, the remaining Co2 and oil extract are pumped into chamber three where the gas evaporates and all that remains is the pure CBD oil extract (CBD Awareness Project, 2019). There are many commercial marijuana plant fields across the United States, with a large majority being in the state of Colorado where the recreational use of marijuana is legal.
