Concept Explication: Media Influence

Concept Explication: Media Influence.

Your primary task is to identify as many different verbal/theoretical/conceptual and operational/empirical definitions given to the concept (media influence) by researchers in the field. Additionally, you are required to make analytical distinctions between the various definitions as well as identify commonalities among them. Finally, you should offer recommendations as to how the concept should be defined in order for it to be useful to scholars and/or communication practitioners. Key concept: Media Influence The assignment involves two essential research skills: literature search and analytical thinking. When you do the literature search, keep in mind that you are looking for variety of meanings associated with your chosen concept, not an exhaustive listing of all research articles using the concept in essentially the same way. It is sufficient to cite one or two references for each use of a concept. Once you have collected various definitions, try to construct conceptual groupings of meanings, or to define boundaries between different meanings associated with your concept. Look for differences in the unit of analysis, or in the level of abstraction, or in the use to which the concept is put. Is the concept assumed to be understood without definition, or do some authors attempt to define it? Is it a variable, or could it be defined as a variable? Does it have operational manifestations that are in opposition to its theoretical/conceptual definitions? Educate yourself about it. As a refresher, here I provide an example of how the concept of democracy is explicated or operationalized. In order to measure the very abstract, complex concept of democracy, the Economist magazine has devised the Democracy Index that is comprised of five dimensions including 1. the nature of electoral processes, 2. functioning of government, 3. political participation, 4. democratic political culture, and 5. civil liberties. Then, each dimension is measured using a series of indicators (e.g., free press, freedom of expression, and independent judiciary are indicators of civil liberties, while voter turnout is an effective indicator of political participation), which are then summed and scaled to create a composite scale varying from 0 to 10. According to the Economist’s Democracy Index, the most democratic countries include Norway and Sweden, while North Korea is the least democratic country in the world. • The assignment must be prepared in APA style and must be about 3 pages (doublespaced,12 point font) or 1,000 words, excluding reference page. • Neither title page nor abstract is needed. • Your reference list must contain at least 7 JOURNAL ARTICLES AND/OR BOOK CHAPTERS. I must be able to access sources. **Template** Concept Explication: Media Influence MMC4420: Mass Communications Research Your Name Date (Page 1) Conceptual/Theoretical Definitions * Present/discuss about 3-4 different conceptual (i.e., literal, verbal, theoretical) definitions given to your concept. Identify multiple dimensions of your concept as well. (1-1.5 pages) Operational Definitions * Present/discuss about 5-7 different operational definitions (i.e., measures, indicators, indices, specific survey questions, experimental manipulation, etc.) given to your concept. (1 page) Comparison and Recommendations * Discuss briefly similarities and differences found among various theoretical/operational definitions you’ve found, and suggest what specific definitions and/or measures would be the most valid and useful for your course research projects. ***** Your body text (excluding references) must not exceed three and a half pages. Therefore, please be concise and succinct in your writing. ***** References * List all the sources you’ve discussed in your body text, following the APA style guidelines.

Logistics

Logistics.

Show and explain the derivations, analysis and how you obtained the responses/answers. a. In trip calculation, it is observed that a Wal-Mart store driver successfully made a total of 120 trips in a given period of time. During field calculation, it is shown that the calculated number of trips is actually 144. What is the value of the adjustment factor? b. It is shown that the population of New York City, NY is much greater than that of Irvington, NJ. Employment opportunities, malls, social activities and tourist sites in New York City are therefore more than that in Irvington. If attractiveness for New York and Irvington are therefore 1,600 and 160 respectively and if the calculated impedance of migration is known to be 1.57, based on Gravity-Based model, estimate in demands, the number of people who travel between Irvington, NJ and New York City per week. c. Elasticity can be defined as percentage change in demand for a 1% change in decision attribute. For linear aggregate demand, what is the mathematical representation/formula for this statement? You must define the parameters you choose to use for this answer. d. In the City of Joplin, due to weather devastation and hurricane effects, the cost of parking in the local Square has increased by 15%. This change has not only reduced the number of vehicles that travel to the Square by 10%, but it has also forced the inhabitants of Joplin to use buses. Bus trips have therefore increased to 25%. With respect to the cost of parking in the local Square, determine the elasticity of vehicle traffic. e. In your own words, describe the meaning of average cost. You normally buy a crate of wine for $75. One crate has 8 bottles of wine. After a month, the store clerk informs you that the same crate of wine now costs $82. However, there are 10 bottles in a crate. To the nearest cent, determine the average cost of the crate from last month to now. f. In your own words, describe the meaning of marginal cost. You normally buy a crate of wine for $75. One crate has 8 bottles of wine. After a month, the store clerk informs you that the same crate of wine now costs $82. However, there are 10 bottles in a crate. To the nearest cent, determine the marginal cost for one additional bottle of wine now. g. In your own words, describe the meaning of unit travel. When traveling on a Greyhound bus, without intervention or obstruction, it is important to determine the unit travel time. If you leave Cleveland in a bus full of 30 passengers and arrive Cincinnati in 4 hours, what will be the average unit travel time in person minutes?

In your final case study, you will analyze five Google technologies that are current under research and development, including the self-driving automobile and four other technologies of your choice. The last chapter of your textbook discusses the search and advertising technologies of Google. While Google is best known for their search and advertising technologies, they also have a multi-billion dollar research and development department that works on cutting edge technologies ranging from self-driving automobiles to renewable energy. For your final case study, you will research 4 technologies (in addition to the self-driving automobile) that Google is currently developing, other than the search, advertising, and Gmail features that we are already familiar with. Google technologies currently in research and development include: 1. Self-driving automobile 2. Project Wing (a drone delivery project) 3. Google Fiber 4. Smart Contact Lenses 5. Google Glass 6. Project Loon (providing Internet service via balloon) 7. Home Automation and Smart Thermostats (Google Nest) 8. Renewable Energy and Sustainability Solutions (Advanced Wind Energy, and several others) Spend some time Googling and searching online and you will likely discover several other technologies currently being developed by Google. Here are a couple links to get you started in your research into Google — Google’s Self-Driving Cars: http://reason.com/archives/2014/07/28/the-moral-case-for-self-drivin/print http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2015/09/self-driving-cars-could-save-300000-lives-per-decade-in-america/407956/ http://www.computerworld.com/article/2486635/emerging-technology/self-driving-cars-could-save-more-than-21-700-lives-450b-a-year.html Google’s Project Wing: http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/28/6080369/googles-project-wing-is-a-secret-drone-based-delivery-system Google Fiber: https://fiber.google.com/about/ Research at Google: http://research.google.com/ Questions for Discussion: 1. In addition to the self-driving automobile (which everyone will analyze), which other four Google technologies would you like to research for your Final Case Studies? 2. Share one interesting finding with the class about each of the five technologies you will be researching (your four chosen technologies plus the self-driving automobile). 3.
