Discourse And Relationship Between Language Structure And Agency Psychology Essay

Discourse can be defined as “forms of language use, usually spoken language or ways of speaking, whether public or private speech” (van Dijk, 1997:2) studies of discourse have traditionally investigated the relationship between language, structure and agency. Approaches included under discourse studies, look to the study of spoken language are known as Conversational analysis, discourse analysis, discursive psychology and critical discourse analysis, each one fashioned by the different pioneers, different theoretical and methodological perspectives, through the varying disciplines of philosophy, anthropology to sociology and psychology. The notion of which has been the subject of much debate. As Lakoff (2001) states: “each area has developed its own language, as nations will, intelligible to those within other areas of linguistics and even adjoining principalities. These boundaries are guarded jealousy and justified zealously. (Schiffrin, Tannen, Ehernberger Hamilton, 2003 :200) By looking at the methodology of the various approaches and the arguments within them will let us see if “things are more open in the social sciences” (Edwards, Hepburn, Potter, 2009) or if the different approaches guard their boundaries ‘Zealously’ (Lakoff 2001) Conversation analysis emerged through ethnomethodology under the influence of Garfinkel and Goffman, who both sought to investigate how people understand and manage everyday life. Enthnomethodology takes a robust view of talk, as it put forward the idea that people actively accomplish social phenomenon. Conversation analysis seeks to look at the ‘traditional sociological enquiry’ (Woofit, 2009) The term conversation analysis was pioneered through the work of Harvey Sacks in the 1960’s in association with Emanuel Schegloff and Gail Jefferson. M3.2 Engage: Immortal LifeWatch the video on ethical data collection (Links to an external site.) and read the following about Henrietta Lacks:Henrietta’s Dance (Links to an external site.)Review of Rebecca Skloot, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Links to an external site.)Taking the Least of You (Links to an external site.)ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONSFirst, let’s start with a question based on your opinion. Consider this: “Most Americans have their tissue on file somewhere. In 1999 the RAND Corporation published a report that more than 307 million tissue samples from more than 178 million people were stored in the United States. This number, the report said, was increasing by more than 20 million samples each year. These samples come from routine medical tests, operations, clinical trials and research donations.” (See the New York Times article) What do you think the repercussions would be if scientists were required to inform and get consent? Would restricting this impede scientific advancements and perhaps harm the public good? After reading and viewing the materials on Henrietta Lacks, answer the following questions: At the time of the incident (prior to the Belmont Report), was there an ethical breach in the medical care that Henrietta Lacks received? Was there an ethical breach by the researchers who received Henrietta Lacks cells? If this happened today: What kind of “harm” may have been done to Henrietta or her family by the researchers (intentionally or unintentionally)? Is there an ethical consequence for the Lacks family that we should be concerned about? Identify other examples, beyond those in the video, of how data is being collected and used and the potential ethical standards that may be violated. How do you recommend that these situations are handled?
