Gender in Media

https://genderandsociety2013.wordpress.com/tag/carls-jr/

Gender refers to the relations between women and men, both material and perceptual. It is the socially constructed characteristics of both women and men such as roles, norms, and relationships and it tends to denote the cultural and social roles of both within a given society. Rather than purely being assigned by genetics, as sex difference is, individuals often develop their gender roles depending to their environments, the media, family interactions, education, and peers. In this commercial by fast-food restaurant Carl’s Jr, to promote their new Jalapeño Chicken Sandwich, the ad has portrayed a sexist, stereotypical analysis of both gender’s societal normative behavior, and also objectification of women in order to sell the product. The ad shows a very harsh, gender stereotypes because the woman’s positioning, as she leaves in patio allows the audience (the man) to stare at her from behind, and this shows how she is turned into an object of vision. A female body is used as an attention grabbing method to sell a burger, and this enforces the negative stereotype that women are “nags”.

In recent past, the media has been a huge influence in the manner which people grow and develop as humans, and this has increasingly become prevalent over the years. This is correct, as individuals often borrow a lot of values, morals, and beliefs from the medial which they are exposed to. Gender is subjective as it contains the shared understanding of how men and women, boys and girls, should look and act. Perhaps the media use such consistent behaviors and amplify them and this impacts the perception of a person, the choices they make, and what the society values. However, the gender roles that exist in the media then turn into an obscure portrayal what it takes to be a man or a woman in today’s world (Grau, Stacy & Yorgos, 2016).

The best ways of solving sexist stereotypes in the society ensuring that people are receive the necessary education about feminism, and through movies, which will assist individuals to change their traditional thoughts about the value of a woman in the society. As such, not only men realize the value of a woman, but also the women themselves realizing their own value. Educating to stop gender inequality is the major idea in the article.
