Land degradation is an issue of increasing concern to most countries. It is a concept in which the value of the environment is affected by one or more combination of human induced processes acting upon the land. It also means the deterioration in the quantity of land or soil that affects phenomena such as floods and bushfires. The land degradation threatens not only the viability of agriculture, but also water quality, human health, biodiversity and the fundamental ecological processes on which all life depend. The loss of arable land has been caused by a number of factors, many or most of which are tied to human development and agriculture used. The major causes are land clearance such as clear cutting and deforestation, agriculture activities, irrigation salinity and over drafting, livestock including overgrazing, pollution and industrialization. Overgrazing is a common problem in many parts of Australia. It is caused by animals, generally sheep, cattle, or other feral animals, all concentrated in the one area, all feeding on the grass and shrubs. Grass and shrubs hold the soil firmly together. The removal of grass and shrubs leaves the soil bare and susceptible to wind and water erosion. The soil can be broken up or compacted by hooves, this makes the problem worse. Irrigation salinity is when the irrigation water, used to provide water for crops and pasture, seeps down to the water table, with all the dissolved salts, rises and kills the crops and grass, as they are not used to the salty soils. Deforestation is the complete removal of a forest ecosystem and conversion of the land to another type of landscape. It differs from clear-cutting, which entails complete removal of all standing trees but leaves the soil in a condition to regrow a new forest if seeds are available. Over drafting is the process of extracting groundwater beyond the safe yield or equilibrium yield of the aquifer. Since every groundwater basin recharges at a different rate depending upon precipitation, vegetative cover and soil conservation practices, the quantity of groundwater that can be safely pumped varies greatly among regions of the world and even within provinces. Some aquifers require a very long time to recharge and thus the process of over drafting can have consequences of effectively drying up certain sub-surface water supplies. Land Degradation Processes The main outcome of land degradation is a substantial reduction in the productivity of land. The land degradation processes include soil erosion, nutrient depletion, salinization, desertification and soil acidification or alkalinisation. Soil erosion is a natural process that removes soil from the land. The critical aspect of soil erosion for our purpose here is that the rate of the process is highly dependent on human actions. Natural rates of soil erosion are lower for soil with a good cover of vegetation than for bare soil. In fact, any human actions that uncover soil (farming, logging, building, overgrazing, fires, etc.) greatly enhance soil erosion rates. Soil salinization is the concentration of salts in the surface or near surface of soils. It involves the processes of salt accumulation in the upper rooting zone so that many plants are inhibited or prohibited from normal growth. Human induced salinization is a major problem in drylands and is often associated with large-scale irrigation. Dryland Salinity When drylands are irrigated, the water evaporates quickly, leaving behind previously dissolved salts. These salts can collect, since there is little rain to flash the system. The salt in the soil inhibits the uptake of water by plant roots and the soil can no longer sustain a vegetative cover. Irrigation Salinity Irrigation salinity is when the irrigation water, used to provide water for crops and pasture, seeps down to the water table, with all the dissolved salts, rises and kills the crops and grass, as they are not used to the salty soils. Nutrients loss is an important problem in regions of low-input agriculture, such as Africa. In such regions, when crops are harvested, essential nutrients are taken away in the crop and not replaced. Desertification occurs whenever a non-desert area starts to exhibit the characteristics of a true desert. The term was coined by the United Nations in 1977. The main cause of desertification is not drought, but mismanagement of land, including overgrazing and felling of trees and brushwood for fuels. Soil acidification is when certain chemicals are used on the soil, for various reasons including pesticides, removal of salt from the surface and the soil, acid rain, the growth of certain crops, certain animal wastes and etc, these chemicals are often absorbed into the soil and become part of the soil-structure. With these chemicals now part of the soil, the soil may become acidic and therefore crops and pastures will not grow. Soil acidification can lead to a productivity decline up to and equal to 50%. Soil akalinisation is clay soils with high pH (> 9), a poor soil structure and a low infiltration capacity. Alkali soils owe their unfavorable physico-chemical properties mainly to the dominating presence of sodium carbonate which causes the soil to swell. Sometimes these soils are also referred to as (alkaline) sodic soils. Effect of degradation Several land degradation affected a significant portion of the arable lands, decreasing the wealth and economic development of nations. Land degradation cancels out advanced by improved crop yields and reduced population growth. As the land resource, base becomes less productive, food security is comprised and competition for dwindling resources increases. As discussed in previous weeks, a supervisor is ultimately responsible for the quality of care; therefore, the supervisor must have relevant data to make informed decisions. Many supervisors watch videotapes of a supervisee’s therapy sessions and give feedback about the supervisee’s techniques, as well as recommendations for treatment planning. Clients are aware that the supervisor is ultimately in charge and directing the provided care.
In contrast, consultation involves a psychologist who is responsible for providing treatment and who seeks feedback from a colleague. The consultant is aware of information provided only by the treating clinician in a consultation. This lack of access to information may result in less accurate feedback but can provide the consultant some flexibility and creativity that might otherwise be missing if the consultant was responsible for the treatment. The consultant understands that he or she does not have all the facts and therefore must rely on the treating clinician’s good-faith judgment to incorporate suggestions into the treatment plan. One of the “purest” forms of consulting is the case method of instruction, whereby a workshop faculty member is asked about a case and provides feedback only within the context of that workshop. For example, Sam from Oldham (diagnosed with depression) described a rather stunning story of ethics guidance violations by his psychiatrists. According to the patient, the psychiatrist that he was meant to see did not meet him and did not explain the reasons for that. Instead, he appointed a “junior” to take care of the patient. This fact did not disappoint Sam as the junior made an impression of a qualified and bright future doctor in need of practice. However, the junior failed to be supportive. After the talk with the patient he went to discuss the issue with the psychiatrist and came back to announce that Sam had personality disorders, and this was not curable. He did not suggest a line of treatment, and, according to the patient, was tactless and unsupportive. What is important to mention, Sam had had suicidal ideation that was on the record, and the junior was aware of that. Ethical issues are difficult to measure, describe, and explain. Even though different associations may develop their own moral codes, in either case, they are mostly guided by the universal principles of what is, to put it simple, good and bad. We will use “The Principles of Medical Ethics” as presented by American Psychiatric Association ([APA], 2013). This ethics code contains general rules, specific advice and includes comments that are concerned with the details of a psychiatrist work. Even though the British psychologists are not expected to follow APA code, they are expected to perform their duties ethically. The case described by Sam appears to be most unethical. Both the psychiatrist and the junior violated a number of ethics rules, being questionably careless with the information concerning the patient and failing to be compassionate and supportive. All of these requirements are emphasized in the “Principles” (APA, 2013, pp. 3, 6). However, the most critical lapse of the junior that seems to be a proof of his incompetence, is the fact that he failed to offer support to a vulnerable patient, which may deteriorate his state and possibly even endanger his life. It is true that the idea of supportiveness can be perceived differently by different people. Still, given the specifics of the job, the junior was supposed to be more sensitive to the state of the patient and to take into account the possible consequences of his words and actions. According to APA (2013) a psychiatrist “shall, while caring for a patient, regard responsibility to the patient as paramount” (p. 10). Yet, no such concern was demonstrated by the junior from the story. He must have heard of various ethics codes, which means that his behavior cannot be explained by ignorance. It appears that the key problem from which all of the above-mentioned violations stem from is the lack of concern. For fairness’s sake, it should be pointed out that the junior could have learned this kind of neglect from his mentor. The psychiatrist’s behavior also betrays a shocking lack of concern with the state of the patient. Letting an incompetent doctor take care of a vulnerable patient is most unethical. Therefore, to avoid this kind of lapses, the responsibility of a doctor should be emphasized, promoted by the mentors and, most importantly, understood by the medical students. A Culture Smash From Moldova To America English Literature Essay

Chang-Rae Lee’s article, “Mute in an English-Only World” illustrates exactly how I felt when I stepped off the airplane. I felt voiceless even though I could speak. About a month after we arrived in the U.S., my dad enrolled me and my sister into elementary school. That is where I faced my number one obstacle: learning the English language. Most of the time, as my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Rigden was explaining an assignment, I was dozing off or daydreaming about being home again. Because I did not understand anything the teacher said or asked me, my grades suffered greatly. In Moldova, I loved waking up in the morning, getting ready for school, and going to school. I was used to getting As and being one of the best students in my class. In Moldova, education was considered not a persons top priority but I wanted to be the best so I studied hard. Coming to the U.S., however, totally changed what kind of grades I earned. Instead of the usual As, my new usual grades were Fs and Ds. I went from being at the top of the class all the way to the bottom. I was overwhelmed with sad and disappointment with myself. I was uncertain of my abilities and scared to take a risk at speaking in English. But I got over the fear and I decided to do something about my low grades and I tried harder in studying English. Going to church is a really important part in my family’s culture. As a family we go to church every Sunday and other times on the weekdays. Going to church in America, however, was torture for me. The sermons were awesome because they were in Russian and I understood them. Fellowship afterward, however, was my main problem. Girls and boys my age were talking in English and having fun after church. They would joke around with each other and ask me a question or two, but I did not understand them, so I thought they were making fun of me because I couldn’t speak English. Because of my paranoid thinking, I was by myself most of the time. Even though the church youth and I were united through one culture and one faith in Jesus Christ, we were separated because of the language barrier. Being afraid of talking in English, I tried to stay as far away from it as possible. Trying to evade the English language, however, wasn’t easy, since it was everywhere. The only place I could go to relax and be myself is my home. When I would come home, I felt like my problems temporarily disappeared. At home, I could communicate with people who shared my language and had the same views as I did. At home, I didn’t have to pretend to be someone I wasn’t. It was a safe place to go, rest, and regain my “enthusiasm” of learning the English language. I was very afraid of speaking in English out loud to people because I still had a big accent, in time, however, I learned and became more fluent. After a year of painfully trying to learn the English language, I was finally beginning to see some positive results. I finally learned the English language and became a could’ve talked easily without much of an accent. However, another problem transpired. Later on, I became fluent in writing, reading, and speaking the English language. However, once I learned the English language wasn’t all that perfect either. After that, I became my mom’s personal interpreter. Since I was the oldest child in my family, I had to constantly be by my mom’s side. For example, once my mom was in the hospital and the nurse gave her a paper she needed to sign in order for the doctor to see her. I had to translate every disease first in English to myself and then in russian to my mom. It took a long time I had I had to go to appointments, stores, and gas stations to help my mom. It was exciting at first, but after a little while I became less enthusiastic about it. Today, it’s much easier for me to speak in English to my dad, sister, and brother. Although sometimes speaking in English causes arguments when my mom is there because she doesn’t understand us, we can’t help but converse in it because that’s the language we’ve heard and learned since coming to the United States. Sometimes this causes my parents to panic because they’re losing their children to a new, different, and frightening culture. My younger sister and brother and sometimes even I forget words and phrases in Russian as a result my mom sometimes gets mad because we can’t speak in Russian that fluently anymore and she cant speak English at all so it creates a gap between us. American fashion was another thing that I have noticed that’s different between the culture I came from to the culture I came into. In Moldova people liked to dress to impress. They dressed modestly and with style, as if by going to the store they have to make a fashion statement. Here, however is just the opposite. People in the United States don’t really care or try hard to impress. I see people walking around, and shopping in their pajamas, looking like they just got out of bed. I’ve lived in the U.S. for 9 years now and whether I wanted to or not, in some ways I changed to the American culture. So even though it’s not normal for me to shop in my pajamas or wear a dress and heels to the mall, I will be wearing a comfortable shirt and jeans. Our culture is close-knit and supports strong family ties. American people, however, are more independent and self-reliant than people who come from the Slavic cultures. For example here in America, there’s a tradition that when a child is 18 years old, she usually moves away from her parent’s house. In my culture, the children don’t leave their parents until they get married. Even if the couple is married if they have no money and need a place to stay, they can come back and live with one of their parents. That is another difference that I noticed between my culture and society. In conclusion, coming to the United States with the Moldavian culture, right into the American one, gave me and my family quit a culture shock. I can easily relate to those people that have mixed cultural backgrounds because I am a combination of two cultures myself. I was born into the Moldavian culture but I grew up in the American one. I’m a part of two cultures that shaped the person that I am today.
