Ethics and Compromise Case Study

Aristotle, Aquinas, and Augustine are great philosophers who devoted their time towards explaining the concept of justice and fairness in society. The writings of these philosophers can be applied to the scenario at hand and guide human resource management on how ethics and compromise can be achieved at the place of work.

According to Aristotle, there is particular justice and universal justice (obedience to laws). Particular justice entails corrective or distributive justice where the state needs to distribute or divide goods citizens based on merit (Huppes-Cluysenaer & Coelho, 2013). Based on the universal justice, it is evident that Thomas has a duty to obey the law; and the Human resource department must act fairly by punishing him for breaking the laws that forbid providing misleading or false information.

The notion of justice for Augustine entails giving each man his due, but his application is grounded on commitments of Christian philosophy. Justice to him is serving God only, and such means serving others well. Justice is critical distinction between political states (which do not exist) and the political states that exist on the planet (Kevin, 2013).The Roman Empire was not synonymous with God’s city since it did not have true justice and because there was not justice, Rome could not be seen as a commonwealth or an ideal state. Earthly kingdoms are unable to possess justice, but a relative state where one is more just compared to the other.

Though imperfect, city-states should serve divine purpose and serve as vehicle to maintain order and the state need to be ruled rightly. Through punishment fear, the state can maintain order where wicked men are checked. Rulers normally punish the guilty and are justified to punish sins that are against nature, and it is right for them to punish the sins that are ‘against the laws’, and ‘against the customs.’ Rulers are allowed to establish laws which are not in conflicts with God’s laws and citizens have a duty to obey their leaders; they lack right of civil disobedience (Kevin, 2013).With regards to this, the human resource department has a duty to terminate the service of Thomas for being untrue when he claimed some educational success. Thomas had a duty of ensuring that he obeys the code or laws of the company and provides correct information that should guide human resource management in the process of hiring. When he resorted to lying, he became guilty (broke the laws) and as such, he is entitled to punishment.

According to Aquinas, it is not possible fulfilling justice demands by only considering what is required by legal justice. Also there is need for a special justice—virtue governing people’s interactions with every individual. Different from the general justice, this justice will direct one, not to the community’s good, but good of neighbor, colleagues and the people one interacts with on regular basis (Austin, 2017). General justice with basic precepts like do not murder helps in preserving common good; however, situations are different and because of this, considering what could be just should go beyond such general precepts. It is critical to consider the needs of individuals when applying such precepts—the particular justice concern is good of the individual, not the common good.

In this situation, Thomas’s action to lie about his transcript can be excused. Even though the policy prescribes termination for employees who lie or provide misleading information, Thomas was probably forced to lie so that he could secure a job opportunity and become economically empowered. The Human resource department must give him a chance to explain why he lied and give him a chance to continue working for the company. After all, he is a great asset to the business as he has been described as an excellent worker, named employee of the month 4 times, and he is employee of the year.

In sum, Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas provide clear guidance to be used when dealing with the scenario. While Augustine and Aristotle claim that the subordinates have a duty to obey the laws of the land and if they broke them, they must be severely punished. Aquinas thinks that the case of every person should be considered according to the particular justice.
