Writing the Research Paper for HA 470

Writing the Research Paper for HA 470.

Chapter One – Introduction

Write approximately 2 paragraphs about the variables of your study (dependent and independent variables). These paragraphs should stimulate the interest of the reader and provide a rationale for the study.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose statement is usually one or two sentences (not more than 2 sentences). The purpose statement usually contains the variables of interest and the characteristics of the participants.

For example: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between stress levels and alcohol consumption among Monroe College students.

Significance of the Study

This section tells the reader why the study is needed. For this paragraph, the researcher uses information from the literature to justify the need. It usually attempts to show:

a.       gaps in the literature

b.      insufficient knowledge in the subject area

c.       validation

Delimitations

This refers to the scope of the study. It describes:

a.       the number and kinds of participants

b.      the variables in the study

c.       instruments utilized in the study (survey, interview, focus groups etc.)

d.      duration of the study

e.       analytical procedures

The above is usually summarized because it will be covered in details in the Methodology section.

Limitations

All studies have limitations. Limitations refer to weaknesses in the study. These weaknesses often relate to the following:

a.       sampling errors – ex. Small sample size limits generalization of the study

b.      uncontrolled variables

c.       faulty instrumentation

d.      representativeness of the data

e.       compromises to internal and external validity

Assumptions

Assumptions are primarily derived from the literature. Researchers assume that the participants answer the questions honestly and correctly; that they are able to read and understand the survey questions; that they follow the instructions carefully; that the test instrument is valid and reliable.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is an educated guess. Your hypothesis should be testable, and should be presented in a clear, and explicit form. Your hypothesis must be clearly aligned with the purpose statement. The null hypothesis and research hypothesis must be stated. Chapter 5 of your test gives examples of null and research hypotheses.

Definitions of Terms

This section contains the meanings of terms and concepts used in your study.

Chapter 2 – Literature Review

The best way to identify what to include in the literature review is to examine your research question(s). Focus on the variables and concepts embedded in your research question(s).

Begin chapter 2 with a statement that describes the purpose of the chapter. Then tell the reader how the literature is organized. You might have to revise this statement as you add or subtract information from Chapter 2. Immediately below the introductory paragraph of Chapter 2, you may provide information that explains the search terms that you used and describe the databases that were used to obtain your information. (Chapter 3 of your text will guide you). Only include the search terms that helped you to find information about your study.

After reading several published literature of the variables of interest, you will need to synthesize them. Synthesizing involves taking similar studies and looking at topics that they have in common, (or different) to make themes. Write you literature review in past tense. For example, Brown and Foster (2013) conducted a research on ….. This section of your paper should be 4-6 pages.
