For this project you will analyze a full-length, peer-reviewed article in a discipline of your choice, published in an academic journal. The purpose of this paper—and a primary purpose of WRIT 1302—is to actively explore the varying disciplinary features of genres. This project begins that exploration by paying close attention to the scholarly article as a genre. Your audience for this assignment is your classroom community of classmates and instructor.
Ultimately, a genre analysis should do three things: (1) make a point about the subject article, (2) read as a critical analysis with strong supporting points and examples from the primary source, and (3) demonstrate understanding of both rhetorical elements and academic conventions.

Your article of choice should be finalized by Friday, Feb.4th within the discussion board . Minimum article length for this paper should be no fewer than 10 pages, (not including citation pages) and be published within the past 10 years.
Composing a Genre Analysis
Using the following guiding questions, define and describe the basic genre features of the article you’ve chosen to study:
1. What is the rhetorical context? Consider the author, purpose, audience, and topic of the article you’ve chosen to study.
2. What conventions are present in the text? Consider the structure, language, tone, and reference conventions of the article.
3. Why is this article representative of the genre of article you have chosen? You made need to refer to chapters 7, 8, 9, or 10 depending upon the genre and academic discipline you are working with for this analysis paper.
Once you have described the genre features of the article, consider the choices the writer or writers made when they wrote the article: Why did they write the article in the way that they did? How do these genre features work together? To what degree does the subject article adhere to the expected conventions of a scholarly article? (See Chapter 6 in Insider’s Guide. You might also find it helpful to peek ahead to Explain how you know the article is or is not representative of the genre.
Be sure to stay focused on the rhetorical and genre features of the article. Do not get bogged down with the issue discussed in the article. Your concern is not what the author says, but how the author says it.
The introduction to your paper should name the article you will analyze, describe the primary methods you will use to analyze its genre features, and explain the goal of your analysis – to analyze an academic article and learn more about the rhetorical context and structure.
The body of your paper might be organized around the two guiding questions, or you might focus on one or two of the genre features that are of specific interest in your article. Of course, you can subdivide the features you are analyzing to address specific elements of the larger categories. For example, if you were analyzing conventions of language, you could address the use of qualifiers, the use of first person, and so on, providing examples from the article and commenting on their usefulness for the writer.
In your conclusion, reflect on what you’ve found. Are there other rhetorical or genre-related issues still to be addressed? What other rhetorical strategies could be explored to analyze the work further? How effective are the strategies the author used, given the intended audience?
