Female Spectatorship and the Femme Fatale

Female Spectatorship and the Femme Fatale.

Description Dr. Uruburu RTVF 157 Female Spectatorship and the Femme Fatale Paper topic (5 pages, typed/hard copy). The classic noir femme fatale who rose to prominence in the WWII years (1941-1945) regularly defied or transgressed social norms and subverted patriarchal traditions or conventions. Some of the most famous are Brigid O’Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon (1941), Phyllis Dietrichson in Double Indemnity (1944) and Vera (no last name) in Detour (1945). Seen as a threat to all those institutions and social constructions that afforded women very little agency, the duplicitous, sexually aggressive, and often lethal single woman (or a woman plotting to become a widow) was a source of great cultural unease in the black and white world of noir. And then there is Ellen Berent in the 1945 film Leave Her to Heaven, perhaps the most frightening femme fatale we have seen. Discuss how Ellen’s character subverts and/or perverts the post-war expectations of audiences and the typical tropes of the femme fatale. Consider how she is the inversion of the usual aggressively seductive woman and is instead a “monster” of domesticity who inhabits the roles assigned by modern patriarchy with a vengeance. How does she compare to any of the other more typical femme fatales we have seen thus far?

Briefing Note to review the current responses to illegal drug use

Briefing Note to review the current responses to illegal drug use.

Background Context: In NSW six people, aged between 18 and 23, died after taking pills at music festivals between September 2018 and December 2019. In QLD, a 24-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, died at the Rabbits Eat Lettuce festival in April 2019. The festival had moved to QLD due to tightening of laws surrounding music festivals in NSW. In July 2019, the NSW Coroner held an inquest into the NSW deaths; the inquest is underway at present. There has been no inquest conducted in QLD. Australia’s national approach to drug policy is one of harm minimisation; the federal government released its National Drug Strategy 2017-2026 in 2017. State governments have tried a range of policy initiatives to address drug related deaths at music festivals, including increasing visible police presence and more stringent requirements on promoters. Most recently, in 2018, the Groovin the Moo Festival held in Canberra was the first in Australia to trial pill testing. This was conducted in order to reduce harm to those who choose to participate in taking pills at music events. The results of this first trial were positive and led to a second trial, which the QLD Government sent down a representative to observe. Due to these recent deaths, the QLD Government has decided to review existing approaches and consider new ones to avoid further deaths at music festivals. Task: The QLD Premier has requested a Briefing Note to review the current responses to illegal drug use at music festivals and consider the best approach for the state going forward. To complete this assessment you will need to complete independent research to develop various policy options, including a specific recommendation. You will need to follow the very specific template provided, and meet the detailed CRA. Your work will benefit from drawing upon a range of government and scholarly sources, such as departmental reports and peer-reviewed journal articles. Here are some introductory media resources to introduce you to the topic before beginning your own research (do not cite these in your Briefing Note): SMH article ‘NSW Coroner to hold hearing into music festival deaths’ ABC News – Health article: ‘Six claims about pill testing—and whether or not they’re true’ Brisbane Times article: ‘Pill-testing ‘would send the wrong message’, LNP convention hears’

Benefits of using induction loop based systems

Benefits of using induction loop based systems.

Introduction The City Council wishes to increase the number of people travelling by bicycle in the city. This has a number of benefits, both for the health of individuals and will reduce wear on road surfaces, saving the City money in the longer term. A problem which has been highlighted concerns the responsiveness of sensors at traffic light controlled junctions; currently these are not designed to detect cyclists.

The following report contains evaluation and recommendations for replacing the old system and replacing them with a new, more cycle-friendly system. Background Your text here [600 words maximum] You should include sections on: • Brief overview of different types of detection systems, benefits of using induction loop based systems • How induction loops work to detect traffic • Construction materials used in bicycles that can be detected by the induction loop (hint: what about carbon fibre bicycles?)

Proposed designs Your text here [400 words maximum] You should summarise what the designs are and the analysis you’ve done on them from Table 1. How would you make the optimum bicycle position clear to cyclists? Comparison between rectangular and circular induction loops Your text here [300 words maximum] State any assumptions you made in your calculations. Draw conclusions from your inductance calculations for the rectangular and circular loops, what are the trends and what conclusions can you draw for the best option for use in a traffic light sensor system for cycling (physical dimensions will also need to be considered here). The actual data should be included in the table at the end of the document. Other designs Your text here [300 words maximum] Any other shapes for induction loops that you have provided (show designs in Table 1, maximum of 2). Explain why you chose these shapes and evaluate if they are better or worse than the other shapes provided.
