California Prison System—How Do You Fix It?

California Prison System—How Do You Fix It?.

On May 23, 2011, the United States Supreme Court ordered California to reduce the number of inmates housed in state prisons by over 35,000 prisoners over a 2-year period. Immediately after this decision, California policy makers began to examine how to implement this change. In making this evaluation, they examined the impact on the prison system and the possible impact on the general population. Additionally, they began to identify types of offenders and crimes that might be best suited for release.

International Relations/Affairs

Research paper outline

  1. Introduction
    1. Thesis:
      1. Based on the political and economical reason, to what extent the refugees and displaced people in Syria migrate to other countries but somehow suffer from the humanitarian and migration intervention?
    2. Background
      1. Intention to migration:
        1. Despite these generalizations, in practice the international community seems to intervene less according to the rights violated, and more in response to large population movements. Migration flows are now being increasingly connected to political, social, economic, and environmental security concerns. (Abell 535)
        2. The international intervention is not really helping the Syrian
          1. S. will admit 10,000 Syrian refugees and resettlement over the next 12 month
          2. Syrians crossed into Jordan at a rate of 1,500-2,000 per day
          3. EU strengthening the borders
  • Why:
    1. The national border (threat to countries)
    2. Migration process
  1. Conclude: Although the Western countries welcome and support the Syrian Refugee by accepting them to their borders, some politicians are worried about the harm from the new-comers and therefore delay the help to them. E.g. Trump speech about Muslim. To map out the linkage and conflict between the Syrian refugees and the humanitarian and migration intervention
  • Point 1: What they are suffering into? economic
    1. Main idea: Syrian face the difficulties on economic sustainability, like daily supplies and self-security issues. (economic impacts on individual refugees and their livelihood + host countries and population
    2. Supporting evidence:
      1. Drought, securitization of water (Erika 294)
      2. Poverty
  • Insecurity and safety issue
  1. => continuing disadvantage economic environment
  1. Conclusion: Syrian fled to different countries and seek for better living environment.
  1. Point 2: contradiction on migration policy about refugee and asylum
    1. Main idea: On the political and international policy side, the Western countries have difficulties to offer a lot of help to refugees and asylum-seekers.
    2. Supporting evidence:
      1. Long before the current violence, this was a country of multifaceted problems: unemployment, income inequality, suppression of minorities, suppression of opposition is just a few issues to name. (Yazgan 181)
    3. Point 3 : political interest behind the humanitarian aid
      1. Main idea: The Western countries consider national security and borders in the first place and beyond the refugee crisis, after the terrorism happened in the United States and France. The Western countries have tightened the policy on migration, refugees, and asylum-seeker. (copy from somewhere, rephrase!)
      2. Supporting evidence:
        1. relevance of foreign policy objectives and practices in migration policy making; Syrian policy in particular has influenced how it has responded differently to Syrians’ mass influx. (Aras193)
      3. Conclusion
        1. Syrian have to flee from their homeland because of different insecurity on political and economical reasons.
        2. Although the Western countries are willing to assist financially and accepting the refugees, the continuing of ISIS attacks challenge and threat the countries on national security.
        3. As Europe have a high mobility within different countries, people see the acceptance of refugee is only harming and creating more damage.

Robert Creeley and Ted Berrigan- Confessional Poem & Johanna Drucker and the Plague of Technology

Robert Creeley and Ted Berrigan- Confessional Poem & Johanna Drucker and the Plague of Technology.

Please read and become familiar with “Poetry Foundation Selections (5 Poems)” by Robert Creeley and “Wrong Train”, “Red Shift” and “10 Things I Do Everyday” by Ted Berrigan at the Electronic Poetry Center (www.epc.buffalo.edu). Each of the poets writes in a manner that is often called “confessional” in that their art directly addresses their everyday lives/feelings/intellect, etc. Creeley and Berrigan do not hide behind their art, but relish the human experience, be it happy, sad or somewhere in between. They tell their readers exactly what they are feeling/thinking at any given moment in their lives. Please write a 250-300 word page that addresses how each poet contemplates the human experience; of being a human being in the age of the postmodern experience. Do the poets delight in existence? Do they complain about and/or despise humanity? Do they celebrate their lives and ask us to join in the fun? Is there a common theme or insight into life that the three poets share? You may choose to compare how each uses imagery, or how common everyday experience is used to make written art by Creeley and Berrigan. You might think of how they each approach death, anger, technology, or any number of common elements in our lives. Each of these men want their readers to fully understand the depth of human emotion/intellect that fills them. I would suggest making a few common connections between their poems and writing your post using those connections as a primary theme. (PAGE 2) Johanna Drucker displays a negative view of postmodern, technology-based American society in her poems “Toxic Democracy” and “Sanction Status”, which can be found within the sequence “11 Works from VisCults” under her name at the Electronic Poetry Center (www.epc.buffalo.edu). Using one or both of those poems, please specifically address how Drucker explains herself as a poet who is struggling to find humanity in the 21st century world of mechanized, industrial language. You might address what you believe her attitude is toward interpersonal communication in the age of technology, or why she seems to use sarcasm so often when addressing the present moment in western culture. Your essay should be about 600 words in length and should specifically cite at least one or more moments/quotes from Drucker’s writing as a way of making your analysis that is specific to her work. No outside research is necessary or allowed for this assignment. It’s meant to be a good, old-fashioned analysis by you (the student) of a poet (Johanna Drucker).
