This week we’re looking more closely at character and dialogue. For your assignment, write a story similar to Ron Rash’s “The Harvest.”
Write from the point of view of a child. In “The Harvest” the child is the “I” character. It’s the boy who is helping his dad and uncle harvest. We see everything through his eyes.
Notice that there are two stories happening at the same time:
Story #1: The boy is helping his dad and uncle harvest cabbages for the neighbor.
Story #2: The neighbor has died in a farming accident.
Which is the REAL story? The neighbor’s death, obviously. But we learn about the neighbor’s death via the top story (story #1), the boy and the men harvesting.
How do we learn about that more important story? Through the dialogue. What the characters say while they work and carry out the whole task of the cabbage harvest shows us that most important (and terribly sad) underlying story.
Take a closer look at “The Harvest” to see all the ways story #2 rises through the dialogue of story #1.
Most good pieces of short fiction will operate this way. A top story, or a story #1 will seem to be the main thing happening, but over the course of the narrative, we find out that there’s actually something much more important, a story #2 or bottom story, going on underneath the action.
Here’s what I want you to do:
Tell a story from a child’s point of view. Have that child learn about something that’s happened by listening to the dialogue of two adults. It might help you to outline things before you start. Who is your child? Who are the adults? What are they doing (story #1)? What’s the more important thing that’s happened (story #2)? Remember that your characters have to be DOING SOMETHING. They can’t be just having a conversation. Make sure to create a world and action for them to inhabit!

Each of you has been responsible to be an active contributor in the task force process. You have already submitted your group deliverables. Now, submit your portion of the response plan (the portion that you contributed) as an assignment. If easier, you can submit the entire plan and very clearly note which pieces you did, for example by highlighting your specific contributions.
In addition, you will submit a short process report talking about the process. Your report should cover all of the following:
1. Start with an introduction paragraph.
2. Outline and evaluate your work contributions to the task force (My role on the Task Force was HR Director). Be specific. If you were unable to meet certain obligations, talk candidly about why that was and how you would address this in a work situation (I met all obligations on time).
3. Talk about how the process was for you, including areas of challenge (time management, inter-group conflicting ideas, changing leadership styles, shared document work, stress, etc.). (No issues, No conflict in the group, very pleasant experience).
4. Share an instance where you had to advocate strongly as a leader in your discipline (BUS) with fellow task force members of other disciplines. How did that go? What do you wish you had done differently, and what are you proud of? (All group members respected everyone’s opinions and discipline, no one had to advocate; we all worked well together).
5. What did you find to be the benefit of developing this plan in a group? Is this method better than individual work, or would it have been more meaningful for you to do this by yourself? (Group setting is better, less workload for one individual).
6. Close your report by discussing where you feel you excelled and where you feel you could have been a stronger collaborator on the task force. Share how we can support you in growing in interdisciplinary collaborations going forward in your degree program (A great asset to the team, well-rounded contributor to the team).

I think that religion can give people a sense of hope and purpose in their lives. However, religion can also destroy people’s lives. Many wars have been fought over religion, and also it has reunited people. It has also mentally, physically, and spiritually brought protection and healing to people in times of suffering, pain, despair, and loneliness (Kurtz, 2015). I believe that religion can be both good and bad depending on how it is used and experienced.
There exists as lot of beliefs and practices which an essential for a tradition to be called a religion. Some of these may focus on dependence on a greater power like a God or gods in order to get through life, mural guidelines or rules which the followers must live by or try to practice on their each and everyday lives, different symbols, rituals, idols, or a timeline which guide followers back to where the religion came from and how it came to being. Religion is a way of life which is founded upon apprehending sacredness in existence.
A religion cannot be put in a simple box, but rather each one of them can have similar elements and which may look different from one religion to another. For instance, the practice of confessing and forgiveness, where a Christian believe that by only praying, confessing, and asking for forgiveness, he or she is forgiven without having to talk to anyone else other than God. On the other hand, Catholicism believes that one must step in to a booth and speak to a priest who acts as a mediator between sinners and God (Kadar, Scott, Hipp, Belavich, Butfer, Rye & Zinnbauer, 2015).
Different issues arise when it comes to religions, or even a single religion, simply because religion cannot fit into a simple box. There exists so many different religions in the world and every individual within a religion experiences something different as compared to another person, hence it becomes hard to make solid assumptions about any religion. Different religions have different rules and guidelines and even stories which make them different from each other. For example in Islam, women religious experience may primarily be centered in homes, and men may be centered more on the Mosque. A teenager or a child may have less or more of a religious connection or experience than an elder or adult person may have in his or her entire lifetime. Every human being has totally different experiences from another and this is what makes religions complicated at times.
Some religions believe in one God, while others believe in many gods. Others do not believe in existence of any God, but rather believe in ancestors and nature spirits, and others believe in living in particular ways in achieving reincarnation or enlightenment from one life to the next. However, most of religions encourage morals and values, and positive goals. People learn how to love, tolerance, unity, hope, peace, and treating others in humane manner. Religious people can support one another and encourage families to stay together (Young & Killick, 2017).
One must first define its meaning, and whether it is something which can fit in his or her life. A religion is a philosophy which is based on one’s spiritual belief, and it helps in healing the spiritual side of a person, and eventually it will permeate into the dynamics of life. Therefore, being religious is a choice, perhaps, a good choice for people who need to learn and understand their ways of lives, and that of others.
