Between 1865 and 1877, the southern states were slowly but surely brought back into the United States after the Civil War ended in 1865. This short period, 1865-1877, is referred to as Reconstruction. As you read in Chapter 16, southern states had to agree to the preservation and application of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments which prohibited slavery, secured equal rights under the law regardless of race, and granted the right to vote to all men regardless of race, respectively. However, white southerners violently stripped many of these rights from black communities in the wake of Reconstruction. The violence enacted against black communities was rarely punished in the courts of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the rest of the South. The close of Chapter 16 details some of the ways in which southern whites terrorized southern blacks.
