1) Please summarize the overall argument of the TedTalk
Students will be able to synthesize the thematic historical influences that shaped the modern history of the United States.
Students will be able to detect the lessons, patterns, or characteristics from historical events to better understand present-day happenings.
Module Learning Outcomes:
Students will understand the broad contours of Reconstruction, westward expansion, the Gilded Age, and the growth of cities up to 1900.
Students will analyze the connections between the failures of Reconstruction and modern racial inequality.
Between 1865 and 1877, the southern states were slowly but surely brought back into the United States after the Civil War ended in 1865. This short period, 1865-1877, is referred to as Reconstruction. As you read in Chapter 16, southern states had to agree to the preservation and application of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments which prohibited slavery, secured equal rights under the law regardless of race, and granted the right to vote to all men regardless of race, respectively. However, white southerners violently stripped many of these rights from black communities in the wake of Reconstruction. The violence enacted against black communities was rarely punished in the courts of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the rest of the South. The close of Chapter 16 details some of the ways in which southern whites terrorized southern blacks.
For this discussion, you have a choice. You can either watch this TedTalk by Bryan Stevenson (Links to an external site.)or this Tedtalk by Michelle Alexander (Links to an external site.). Both Stevenson and Alexander at the forefront at the battle for justice in the legal system so feel free to watch both!
Then, in your discussion:
1) Please summarize the overall argument of the TedTalk that you watched
2) Then, make an evidence-based argument (using the textbook, the TedTalk, and any other sources that you want) that there is or is not a connection between racial injustices from the 1870s – 1900 and those in the 21st century. Is the model of racial injustice established after Reconstruction a similar model to today or are these two eras not comparable? There is not a wrong answer here. Just be sure to support your argument with evidence.
Your discussion post should be at least 250 words (due Saturday night) and your two posts (at least 75 words each) are due on Sunday night.
Please be sure to remain respectful in your post and your replies, especially. Intellectual disagreements are useful because they prompt us to look at the world differently.
