Ethical implications for both the service users and the organisation

• Evaluate characteristics of best practices for medical practices (LO1 Ethical implications for both the service users and the organisation.

Write a critical account of the ethical implications for both the service users and the organisation in the given case study.

Case study:

Shahana was born in Wolverhampton in 1992 to Bangladeshi parents. She had no previous experience of working in social care, except for a lot of voluntary work in the community and helping to care for her elderly grandmother. Shahana was a second year social care student. She had a part-time job as a carer in a private residential home for older people. She did this for the experience.

Shahana was encouraged to spend time with the service users and got to know a number of them quite quickly. For example, she spent the first few days in one unit and got to know a group of four women. This group sat together and were very talkative. She noticed that one of them was called “Joan” by the staff and “Julia” by her three friends.

When Shahana asked why, the woman explained that “Joan” was her “official” name and “official” people, like doctors and nurses, always call her that. However, she’d always been “Julia” to friends and family. Shahana then asked what she would like the staff to call her and she said, “Julia”. Shahana passed this on to her key worker, who informed the other staff.

Shahana tried to talk to all the residents in the unit. However, one man was very unresponsive. In the second week, she took him a drink from the trolley and he told her that he didn’t want anything from a “dirty Paki”. Another care assistant overheard and told her to report this to the manager as an incident of racist abuse. However, Shahana felt that the man was in his own home and she should not judge him for his attitudes. She did not report the incident and tried to avoid him…..
