Faith is something very important in a person’s development. I believe we all develop a faith in something. It could be faith in ourselves, or a higher being. Fowler writes an interesting article. Personally, I believe faith development is interconnected to other developmental processes. For example, children use their imaginations to tell stories particularly with good and evil. They have a hard time differentiating between fantasy and truth (Fowler, 2004). As they start to reach middle childhood, they start to grow in knowledge and develop their own values. Before they reach this age, they generally believe the faith of their parents. Now, that they are reaching different stages of development, their faith will grow and change too. Middle childhood allows for more logical thinking and better able to shape their experiences and meanings (Fowler, 2004). They start becoming independent in their thinking. I think this clearly shows that faith development is connected to other areas of development.
Another example of them being connected is during the synthetic stage. Identity and ideology are starting to be lived out and become a matter of importance. If they are issues from childhood, there can be issues later on when trying to construct identity and ideology as an adolescent (Fowler, 2004). I believe as children grow and develop through the different stages of cognitive development, their ability to develop their faith on a more real and personal level will happen. Most of us take on what our families have taught us early on, but as we develop more cognitive skills our perceptions change. We can start to evalutate what we know as truth. Adults are more reflective thinkers and can recognize that there are multiple perspectives to what we believe as truth (Fowler, 2004). This cannot happen without developing this way of thinking. I do believe faith development is dependent on how we develop in other areas.
I grew up in a Christian home. Faith was always an important part of my family. I can remember always going to church as a child. My parents made sure we were always involved in sunday school, awanas, youth, and any other events that were being held. As a child I believed what my teachers at church taught me. Honestly, my faith grew as I grew, and I developed more understanding of what I was being told. I became a believer at age 11. My youth leaders were very vital in my growth. I do not believe I fully grasped my faith and having a biblical worldview until I reached late high school or college. Fowler pointed out that faith continues to develop throughout life (2004). This is very true. I am still learning and growing as a middle aged adult. I have seen in my own children how their faith development has changed as they have gone through certain stages of development. My oldest son got saved at age 5, but he only knew it as he wanted to be good and go to Heaven. Now that he is 18, those thoughts have definitely changed. He understands more of what it means to have salvation and to truly follow God. All of this happens as we grow and reach the different stages of development.

As I read the article of James Fowler, and his stages of faith in relation to the developmental concepts I have learned in this course. I find myself agreeing with faith theorists who recognize the complex interplay of factors that impact our faith development. The development of faith, is much like other aspects of human development, it involves movement from one stage to another and is rarely systematic or predictable. In many cases, people reach chronologic and biological adulthood while reflecting structural stages of faith that are typical of early or middle childhood or adolescence. Spiritual nurture and maturity, combined with a person’s spiritual grasp and obedience has a deep impact on the individuals stride and strength of faith.
My impressions of faith development in relation to the individual development processes are deeply tied together. The interconnection is deeply tired to the individual’s ability to understand the depths of the faith they have choses. I have a dear friend who is Muslim, and his whole life has been all about the Ala and the Muslim faith. He is the most faithful follower of a religion I know! His grandfather is Muslim, his father is Muslim and he is Muslim. He tells me all the time that if I were born in the Middle East, with Muslim parents, I too would be Muslim. There is much truth in this statement, although I have a choice to decide whom I may follow, as a Muslim, I will most likely follow what is socially accepted and is the social norm. James Fowler states, “…the process of gradual maturation and reworking of faith, as when an individual moves from, faith development can continue to mature across the life cycle. The following is an illustration childhood to adolescence, and from adolescence to adulthood. Like cognitive, moral, or ego development:” (Fowler, 2004)
In my own personal experiences, my faith as a child was like that of a Genie in a bottle. I believed that God was a distant cosmic God with very little interest in me or mankind; however, as I matured in my young adult years, I realized, the Genie in the bottle is fictitious and not productive. It was not until I had become a young adult myself that I realized my desperate need for Jesus to save me and set me free! As fowler discovered, “First, there is the process of gradual maturation and reworking of faith, as when an individual moves from, faith development can continue to mature across the life cycle.” (Fowler, 2004)  This process was not awarded me the benefits of an open mind! I understood, my life is not about me, but about others. Others first and then self, everyone had to come first this day. It was not until I became an adult that I understood that I really needed Jesus to forgive me and cleans me from my sin that I was finely free from the bondage of sin!
