Why the Soviets Lost their War in Afghanistan Research Paper

Why the Soviets Lost their War in Afghanistan Research Paper. Introduction On December 27, 1979, the world woke up to the news of the invasion of puny Afghanistan in Asia by the then super power of the Soviet Union. The news brought with it the surmise that this was a war that Afghanistan, a disunited country with limited military resources, would not stand up to the military might of the Soviet Union, leading to the foregone conclusion that in a short while of time, Afghanistan would become another satellite country of the Soviet Union, joining the many satellite countries like Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary that the Soviet Union had taken over, since the end of the Second World War. Protests were naturally expected from the United States of America (U.S.A.), the NATO countries, and other nations friendly with the U.S.A. and the NATO powers. They would remain protests only, just as would be the noises that would emanate from the United Nations (U.N). Gradually they were expected to die out. Afghanistan would have to virtually fight its own physical battles against the Soviet Union, and fait accompli the small nation of Afghanistan would be gobbled up by the mighty super power of the Soviet Union. Initially, the course of events could find no fault with the surmise that Afghanistan was a lost country, as more and more parts of the country swiftly came under the control of the Soviet Union. However, gradually the speed of the advance of the Soviet Union slowed, and even though most of the country was in their hands, they were soon facing strong resistance from the resilient Afghans in their pockets of strength. It was becoming clear that this was turning out to be a war of as attrition, and the more determined of the opponents would carry the day. The light at the end of the tunnel for the Afghans was glowing bright. The Soviets had not come prepared for a war of attrition, and the Afghans with ever growing support from the Americans in terms of military supplies were proving a hard nut to crack, in terms of total dominance. The war between the Soviet Union dragged on for nearly a decade, and in the early months of 1989, a tired, disappointed, and disgraced Soviet Union started pulling out its battle weary troops, not wanting to lose any soldiers to what had become a lost cause. Afghanistan had surprised the world by first withstanding total domination by the Soviet Union, and then driving the troops of the Soviet Union out of the country. Another super power had bitten the dust to a determined opponent, brining back memories of war between the U.S.A. and Vietnam. Background Moves by the Soviet Union to control the country of Afghanistan started earlier than the attempted physical invasion of Afghanistan. This was the consequence to its desire to expand its influence in Asia, and get closer to the prized warm water ports of the Arabian Sea. Through a bloody coup in April 27, 1978, a puppet communist government was established under President Nur M. Taraki. The government of Nur M. Taraki was not a popular government, and not surprisingly resistance to the government sprung up in different parts of the country that essentially consisted of several warrior tribes. The first major outburst of this resistance took hardly a year to happen, when in March 1979 a bloody uprising took place in the city of Herat. The uprising was put down, but the casualties included 100 Soviet Union citizens, which was a foreboding of things to come, and the possible time when the Soviet Union realized that it may be forced to actually occupy the country, if it wanted to control it (NavrozWhy the Soviets Lost their War in Afghanistan Research Paper

I’m working on a english report and need a sample draft to help me learn.

Essay 2 Part 1 OverviewIn Essay 2, you will be practicing research, synthesis, satirical argument, and self-reflection. Essay 2 has three parts: a synthesis and response, a satirical argument, and a reflection, each of which has unique instructions and will be submitted as a stand alone assignment in Canvas. Part 1, the Synthesis and Response, must be completed FIRST and will be submitted before you write the satire. For Part 1, students will be asked to identify an American social and/or political issue they would like to satirize LATER (when they write Part 2). In this part of the assignment, students will use popular and scholarly research to learn about the American political and/or social issue they would like to later satirize. This synthesis and response will ensure that students understand the context of the issue before they begin to craft their satirical argument. As explained in the Synthesis handout and shown in the Synthesis Student Sample, synthesis is the process of bringing together materials to support a single point. You will be practicing synthesis in this paper by using research to support your own claim about an American issue. Please choose your topic wisely. Choose something controversial that you can satirize later. Once you submit the synthesis, you are stuck with whatever topic you have chosen, so make sure it is something you can research and satirize. Source Requirements:You must fully introduce, quote from, and fluidly integrate four sources in this synthesis and response. Use only 4 sources (no more and no fewer) and make sure they come from the following categories:2 of the 4 sources must be from peer-reviewed academic journal article found in JSTOR or EbscoHost through the MSJC Library Databases. These sources will give you credible information about the context of the issue you’re exploring, including the history, cultural relevance, or studies conducted on this issue. If you are unfamiliar with using the databases, refer to the Library Research Page: Navigating the Databases. The other 2 sources should be popular sources from newspapers, magazines, or websites or from other MSJC databases such as Issues and Controversies or Opposing Viewpoints. Thesis Question:Your thesis will answer the following question:What is your stand on this American social or political issue and why?Guiding Questions to ConsiderAs you conduct your research, you should be seeking to find out the following types of information so that you can LATER satirize this issue from a knowledgeable perspective:What is the history of this issue (when did it begin? how did it begin? where did it begin? Dig deep here–look at systems and roots)Who (specifically) is affected by this issue? How are they affected?Who or what is causing or maintaining the issue? Who or what is to blame for it’s continued presence in American culture and society and why? What currently is going on in regards to this issue? What are people doing about it (if anything)? What’s at stake if this issue is not solved? What are the consequences of this issue? What are different sides of this issue saying about it? What is the counter-argument to your position and why do you not accept it? Organization: This paper must include a full introduction paragraph that introduces the topic, the sources, and the thesis. After the introduction, the paper must include multiple body paragraphs that follow the SCREAM model; in each body paragraph, material from each of the research sources must be integrated to support the student’s claims. Each body paragraph should contain at least one quote and be synthesized to support your ideas. The paper must wrap up with a conclusion paragraph.Citations and MLA Format This paper must be in MLA format. It must include in-text citations for all quoted and paraphrased material. All sources must be introduced and credited. A Works Cited for all sources used in the paper is mandatory. Failure to cite (i.e. plagiarism) will result in a non-passing grade on the paper.InstructionsYou must do the following in this paper:include a unique and creative title that sets the tone for your paperbegin with a fully developed introduction paragraph that introduces the topic and asserts the thesis statement (which must directly answer the question above)develop an argument to support the thesis that includes evidence (quotes and paraphrases with in-text citations) from four credible sources, taking care to adhere to the source requirements abovebegin each body paragraph with a subclaim that helps develop the argumentfollow the SCREAM model in each body paragraph, including evidence in each body paragraphintroduce your sources fully as you use themcite all quotes and paraphrases with MLA formatted in-text citationsexplain all evidence to show the reader how the evidence supports the subclaim and the thesiswrap it up with a succinct conclusionwrite in 3rd person (no I, me, my, myself, we, our, your, or you)proofread for grammar and mechanical errorsmeet and stay within the word count of 1,000-1,300 wordsObjectivesThis activity is designed to support the following Learning Objectives:Examine complex reading assignments through inquiry based reading and learning.Develop and state clearly a unifying thesis or proposition that examines a line of inquiry on an appropriately limited topic.Select examples, details, and other evidence to support or validate the thesis and other generalizations and integrate them into an organized, coherent sequence that clearly and logically develops an argument.Employ principles of inductive and deductive logic to support and develop ideas in written assignments that reflect causality and causal skepticism, analysis, inference, and synthesis of sources and conceptsCompose essays using precise diction that communicates unambiguously, demonstrating maturity of style and thought and a sense of audience.Examine and evaluate appropriate college-level resources through research in support of a productive research question.Integrate source material into papers using summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation, a system of note-taking and documentation and appropriately documenting sources (using MLA or another universally known system of documentation).
