Assignment 1: In Chapter 8, Performance Management and Appraisals are highlighted. This week, I’m challenging you to really think about this. Here’s the scenario:You are the ‘boss’ of the Business Administration Department at this community college. Part of your job is setting performance objectives (using Management by Objectives MBO) with each instructor. It is now time for you to set meaningful performance objectives with the HR instructor (me). You will set the objectives in August, 2020, and then appraise the instructor’s performance (me) at the end of the semester in December, 2020 for this course. 1. You are to convince me (HR instructor) in your posting of a key objective that I will be measured on. You are to define what that objective is, why it is important, and how you will measure me. Assume we will discuss it fully, but I need to be convinced as this is joint objective setting session. I want to know what expectations are and what you will be looking at to judge my performance. And, you know I don’t want any SURPRISES at my performance review at the end of the course. Because I am pretty sure you need an example, let me give you ONE or TWO HERE (do not use these!!!)1. Proposed Objective: Instructor follows Wake Tech Attendance policy during the semester. Reason it is important: Wake Tech receives funding based on number of students who attend, so financial measures are impacted if an instructor does not do his/her job. How to measure this: Boss will analyze the attendance reporting each week and ensure that students are being withdrawn on a timely basis.2. Objective: Instructor’s ability to communicate effectively.Reason it is important: Student enrollment and retention in class will not be good if any instructor cannot communicate effectively and efficiently. How to measure this: Boss will analyze the course evaluations done at end of semester and look for comments reflecting instructor’s abilities to communicate. Selecting The Most Suitable Procurement Route Construction Essay
Understand that due to the terrible weather and severe storm, a significant damage was happened to Cinnamon Grand hotels. As a result, the hotel management board requested for advice on selecting an appropriate procurement route after deciding to reconstruct the destroyed buildings. There are a few procurement routes could be selected amongst traditional procurement route and non-traditional procurement routes which includes Design and Build, Management Contracting and Construction Management. In general, Traditional method is more favored by public project because it satisfies public accountability, Design and Build method is more for inexperienced client who desire cost certainty and fast track projects, Management Contracting method is usually adopted by experienced client who does not take cost certainty as their priority, similar to Construction Management. Selecting an appropriate procurement route will directly benefit the client in many perspectives, such as time saving, cost saving, risk avoidance, quality control, price competition and so on. Provided information states that you do not have an in-house executive to advise the reconstruction; you will obtain a financial assistance of estimated 120 million; you intend to re-open the business latest by 28th February 2015. Thurs, the most important issues which you are highly concerned are risk allocation, price certainty and project duration. Two points each will be allocated to the most suitable procurement route. Besides, you are also concerned about site control, quality control, complexity and heritage. One point will be allocated to the most suitable procurement route. Table 1 shows the matrix for making decision on how to select a suitable procurement route. Table 1: Matrix of selecting the most suitable procurement route Traditional Procurement Design and Build Management Contracting Construction Management Risk Allocation ᵃ 1 2 Price Certainty ᵇ 2 2 Project Duration ᶜ 1 2 1 1 Site Control ᵈ 1 1 Quality Control ᵉ 1 1 1 Complexity ᶠ1 1 Total 6 7 3 3 2. Factors Affecting the Selection of Procurement Route 2.1 Risk Allocation Risks can be classified as design risks and construction risks. It is crucial for you to know much risk it can bear and how to pass the risks to the contractor; especially in this case, you do not have a team of specialists who are capable of advising on the design nor the reconstruction. Amongst all the procurement routes, Design and Build method will allow you to pass almost all the design and construction risks to the contractor, at a price. Traditional procurement method distributes risks to both insured consultant and contractor equally, while Management Contracting and Construction Management have a disadvantage of retaining most of the risks to employer. Therefore, Design and Build and Traditional methods are most suitable for Cinnamon Grand to minimise risks ᵃ. 2.2 Price Certainty Price certainty is always a prior concern in private projects, because preventing overrunning budget plays a big part for private client. It has been highlighted in the key issues by Cinnamon Grand saying price certainty is most important. Traditional method provides a high level of price certainty because it relied on competitive tender, usually the Contactor with the lowest tender price will be accepted, although sometimes negotiation happens. Other advantages of Traditional method are competitive fairness, which means all tenderers’ prices will be based on same design drawings issued by Consultant, and a relatively low tender preparation cost comparing to the rest methods. Design and Build method also ensures a firm cost as most contracts will be let on a lump sum basis, it is also unlikely to have design changes, because contractor’s responsibilities of both design and construction will increase the buildability and minimise the variation. Management Contracting and Construction Management are at disadvantage as the actual project cost will only be know when all the work packages have been let. In order to make the price competitive, the best way of obtaining price certainty is through Traditional method or Design and Build method ᵇ. 2.3 Project Duration Time is essence for those who want quick return on the investment, especially for private client. There are two ways to avoid project delays, one is to start project as early as possible, the other is to end project as early as possible. As I know that the date of commencement is on 1st March 2014 and the date of completion is on 28th February 2015, which means the time for construction is really crucial. Fortunately, the decision has been made in August 2012, giving us one and a half year head start on doing whatever necessary preparation works, for example, to carry out brief, design and competition. The late worksite handover date seems to be suitable to use Traditional method, however, under certain circumstances of any variation order incurred, Contractor reserve the right to claim extension of time, this will affect the crucial construction period and cause project delays. Therefore, even though Traditional method allows design works can be start early, it still has a medium risk of project delays because the design responsibility does not lie with Contractor. Same applies to Management Contracting and Construction Management as well. Although Management Contracting and Construction Management allow design and construction works to be carried out concurrently, Management Contracting takes more time on selecting a management input and then subcontractors, and Construction Management makes you have to deal with many subcontractors and no single subcontractor is solely responsible for the date of completion. So since there is a long preparation period from August 2012 to March 2014, I suggest that Competitive Design and Build (two-stage tendering) method will be best suitable to meet the time requirement ᶜ, not only because it avoids delay to the commencement date, but also ensures the completion date with buildability and single point of contract and responsibility. 2.4 Site Control In order to provide a good service while the construction is going on, work site must be well managed in every perspective including safety, planning, noise and etc. The advantage of Management Contracting and Construction Management methods is having a shorter communication line between you and subcontractors, so that to ensure a faster response to decisions. On the other hand, Traditional and Design and Build method do not have control of subcontractors, because there is no contractual relationship between you and subcontractors. Thus, Management Contracting and Construction Management methods will be best suitable to control work site ᵈ. However, it is still possible for other procurement methods to keep the work site well managed by improving the contract requirements and specifications. 2.5 Quality Control Traditional method has a low quality risk because most of the design works are done by insured Consultants who working directly for you. Management Contracting and Construction Management methods also have a low quality risk because a close link will be established between you, Consultants and Contractors, to allow buildibility. Even though when under certain circumstances, design quality may be compromised duo to pressure from employer. Design and Build method has a relatively high quality risk because the whole design and build process is solely undertaken by Contractor, which may slightly affects the quality level. All above mentioned procumbent methods except Design and Build method are suitable to enhance quality control and heritage ᵉ. Even so, the possible affected quality using Design and Build method also depends on how experienced the employer is and how accurate is the requirements stated in the contracts document. So I think it will not be a difficult task for such an experienced client in renovation of buildings like Cinnamon Grand. 2.6 Complexity Project’s complexity can be identified by the types of physical services involved, the number of sub-contractors, resources in term of labour, plant and materials, the level of technology and the uniqueness of project activities (Songer and Molenaar, 1997). Traditional method and Design and Build method are more suitable for simple or medium-scaled buildings like this particular project, while Management Contracting and Construction Management methods cater for larger and more complex buildings. Considering all types of complexities mentioned, the core concept still revolves around time and cost as the primary purpose is to re-open the hotel business to make money. And the construction period for phase two is only one month time. So I suggest that in order to encourage time saving, Design and Build method should be selected ᶠrather than Traditional methods, because all construction works will be conducted by Contractor alone while Traditional method has different specialists doing high technology multimedia facilities and air conditioning system. 3. Recommendations There is no single procumbent method suitable for all kinds of projects, advantages and disadvantages can only be determined according to clients’ concerns and priorities. Therefore, by referring to the result formulated in Table 1, I suggest that the most suitable procurement route should be Competitive Design and Build.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy within Social Work
order essay cheap Cognitive Behavioural Therapy within Social Work. One of the best things about working in the field of social work is how broad and diverse the field is. For social workers, no matter what field setting one decides to work in, theoretical orientation is always practiced. According to Cade (2016), the importance of theoretical orientation is to inform the clinician’s attention on session goals and interventions. It is also designed as the clinician’s viewpoint for how to solve and/or treat a problem (Cade, 2016). For me, the theoretical orientation that I connect and use the most is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). American Psychological Association (2019) states that “CBT is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorder, alcohol and drug use problems, martial problems, eating disorders and severe mental illness.” CBT focuses on treating the problem by changing the thinking pattern of the clients. CBT is used as a learning to process, learn coping skills that a client will be able to apply into their daily lives. Most clinicians use CBT because it is a theoretical orientation that has proven to be tried and true. When working with individuals’, clinicians use CBT because it is evidence-based, and individuals have found success. Clinicians meet the clients where they are at. The clinicians will work with the clients thought process and help them process their needs and help them change their interpretation of a behavior or situation to produce a resolution. According to National Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (2019), one of the many benefits of using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that clinicians are working with individuals to get better instead of feeling better. Discourses establishes our understanding of what our client’s needs are and shapes our understanding of how to respond to their need, and discourses shape social work practice (Healy, 2014). Discourses may even cause clients to face challenges to getting their needs met because our thoughts and actions are shaped by the language practices of discourses; and social workers are able to challenge the ways that we view and respond to client’s needs. (Healy, 2014).Clients may even have personal discourses that have kept them from making positive changes in their lives. Some of these discourses may have come from themselves, their environment, family members, close friends, etc. and they can influence how clients respond to difficult situations. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is essential to assist clients successfully address their issues, by identifying the problem and building on their current resources and building on their strengths. Before becoming a social worker, I would say some of the discourses and misconceptions that I had were that social workers only “took children from families” and that therapy was only an idea if you had reached a breaking point. Within in the African American community, therapy is looked down on. So often, we are told “you don’t need Jesus, you need prayer”. Mental health and therapy were such a taboo topic. Within the past few years we have started to hear the African- American community talk about mental health and therapy. Within the past few year, actress Tarija P Henson has created a mental health foundation, The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation (Lane 2018). This past year actor, Michael B Jordan discussed publicly that he went to therapy after showing symptoms of depression after finishing a role in “Black Panther” (Lane 2019). With many more African American celebrities speaking up, it is making therapy not a “hush hush” topic. More African Americans are becoming receptive towards therapy and realizing that you can have both, Jesus and therapy. The main features of CBT have not only influenced my leadership style and preferences, but it enhanced my leadership skills. Working in the field of substance abuse and mental health, I work with my clients about the specific problems, how we can treat the problem, and focus on their goals so they continue living a health life. We focus on their triggers and give them the skills that they need to manage/cope with their mental illness or staying sober. I believe this translates in my leadership style. As a leader, I am expected to work and help my clients find realistic goals and coping skills in stable times or in times of crisis. Transformational theory is the leadership theory that aligns with my leadership style. The main characteristics of Transformational theory are vision, appropriate degree of risk taking, energy and determination, provision for challenges and encouragement for teammates (Van Wart, 2013, p.558). Upon learning about CBT, the model was very attractive and fit my leadership style, and I was able to take some features of this theory to implement in my leadership style, which has allowed me to be goal oriented, identify strengths even in the midst of difficulty and empower other to achieve goals. Utilizing CBT has helped me to help my clients realize the strengths the possess, the self-love that they didn’t realize they had. Under this type of leadership style, my clients and future employees would feel encouraged to perform to the best of their ability and use their strengths to complete tasks. References (n.d.). Across Time and Space: Solving the Mysteries of the Ancient Cultures Essay
Nowadays, in the era when the humankind has reached the bar people never thought they will ever be able to, it is hard to believe that thousands of years ago, there were different cultures and a completely different civilization, just as well-developed as ours, only in a different way. One of the most famous and the least explored, the Sumerian civilization is worth taking a closer look at. The first issue to discuss, the Uruk vase is closely connected to worshipping of Inanna, the Sumerian Goddess. The impressions of animals and grain of the vase speak for themselves, making it clear that the vase was supposed to be used in the ceremonies worshipping fertility. Cuneiform is the method of writing which was invented before people learned how to produce paper. Carving letters in clay tablets, people managed to keep certain information. As for the Stele of Naram-Sin, the artifact tells the story of the king who was considered to be nearly divine. An obvious element of the ancient worship, the stele offered an innovation I writing art for the Sumerians, since it is written in a horizontal format instead of the old-time diagonal one. Standing motionlessly in the calmness of The Square Temple, Votive Statues are supposed to represent the people who used to come of the temple to pray. The exact copies of the then men and women, these statues are a great study of the Sumerian traditions and even fashion. A peculiar alternative for alphabet, hieroglyphs are specifics signs which are meant to define certain people, objects, notions or phenomena. They are used to write down information. For instance, Japanese and Chinese people use hieroglyphs instead of letters. Considered to be the symbol of Egypt unification, the Palettes of King Narmer have the impression of the pharaoh with the crown of Upper Egypt on the one side and him wearing the crown of Lower Egypt on the reverse. The two impressions are supposed to symbolize that Egypt became an entity. Get your 100% original paper on any topic done in as little as 3 hours Learn More The elements that most people associate with such cultures as the Egyptian one, mastabas are the burial place with rooms in it for the tombs of the diseased. Another element of the Egyptian culture, serdab is the chamber in a mastaba. An integral element of a serdab, a serdab sculpture, such as the statue of King Djoser, was supposed to be a kind of homage to the diseased person and to serve as a specific “reservoir” for the soul of the diseased. Placed in the serdab, it was supposed to be the necessary element of the Egyptian burial tradition. The modern world knows Hatshepsut, the famous pharaoh of Egypt, only owing to the fragmentary sculptures. Most of them depict the pharaoh in her royal dresses and devoted to her royal routines. However, some of the statues portray her as Osiris. Speaking about the Nanna Ziggurat, the Sumerian temple, one must mention that it was apparently built to honor Nanna, the Sumerian deity of the night and moonlight. Unlike Nanna Ziggurat, which was made of mud bricks, the Pyramid of Djoser was made of stone blocks; however, the two still look much alike, with their pyramidal structure and sharp angles. Thus, it is clear that the Sumerian people, as well as the people of the Ancient Egypt, reached the peaks which the present-day world has never heard of. Though the has-been kings of the universe knew nothing about the technological discoveries of the present-day science, they still managed to create the culture which still remains a mystery and is filled with the most incredible legends. Taking a closer look at their artworks, one can reach the ancient culture and see the magnificence of the human race.
