Your task for this exercise is to begin to conceive a question that you would like to spend considerable time researching (and eventually answering, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves). That may sound like an easy task, but it’s not. The question must be one that can be researched, in other words one for which research materials exist. It must be of a realistic scope — we are talking about a research project here, not a dissertation. It must be within the scope of some discipline in the humanities. Again, the humanities include history, philosophy and religion, language and literature, the arts (fine art, performing art, art history), and cultural studies. It must be a question for which you cannot simply look up the answer; your research will contribute to the answer, but ultimately, the answer will derive from your own critical thinking combined with your synthesis of existing scholarship. And it must be one for which you do not already have the answer in mind.Start by discussing what branch of the humanities your interest falls under. Provide some background for the topic. Research questions do not appear out of the ether; they arise from what is currently known. For example, I am currently working on a project that examines how one author was influenced by an earlier one. I did not discover this connection: the more recent author made several overt references to the earlier one, and biographers have long known about these connections and how much the more recent author loved the earlier one’s work. But my project focuses on ways the more recent author included subtle references to the earlier one in his most famous novel — references that my research so far suggests that no one else has noticed. Your topic, too, will doubtless arise out of work that other scholars have done. What is already known about your topic that you can build on? And where can you contribute your own ideas? Establishing what is already known and accepted about your topic helps you ground your question in reality and clarify what still needs answers, and thus helps focus your research. End by stating your question as clearly and concisely as you can. Once you have established your main research question, expand on it by offering at least three more specific questions (these do not necessarily have to be how or why questions, though they can be, and again how and why questions are more productive) that will help you answer the main one. Briefly explain your rationale for these questions: how will they help you answer the main question?GuidelinesThe odds that your first attempt at framing such a question will be successful are virtually nil, so at this stage, I am asking you in effect to think aloud here. However, keeping three principles in mind will help:1) The scale of abstraction is key  — When students think of researching a question, they almost always start out too broad (too high on the scale). In the past, students have told me that they wanted to research such topics as the effect of music on people’s mental states, how Shakespeare’s plays have been adapted to films, and the influence of religion on art. Each of those could fill not just a book but a whole shelf or even room of books. Eventually, each student produced a good research project because they quickly narrowed their focus to something manageable, but the broader your original question, the more work you will need to do to accomplish that task. Almost inevitably, the process of research will force you to narrow your focus as you go, but starting out with a reasonable level of ambition will make your life easier.2) Some questions are more productive than others — Think in terms of how and why questions. Questions that begin with who, what, when, and where elicit facts, and facts usually take almost no time to state. How and why  questions demand rich, complex answers driven not just by evidence but by logical reasoning. (Note that how and why can be replaced with nearly synonymous phrases like In what way or For what reason; the point is the type of question, not the exact wording.) We call those kinds of questions productive because answering them allows you — indeed, requires you — to write at length, which presumably is your goal. The realization that you have nothing left to say before you have written as much as you had planned to write is discouraging, and sometimes panic-inducing; the discovery that you have more to say usually comes as a relief.3) Your question should be conceptual, not practical. First, humanities disciplines tend to focus on conceptual questions. Scholars in the humanities tend to focus on persuading their readers to see something in a new way, rather than persuading them to take an action. Second, practical questions are harder to answer than conceptual questions because a persuasive practical argument must virtually always be founded on a persuasive conceptual one. Put more simply, you cannot effectively tell people what they should do unless you convince them that you understand the situation well.Your entire document should be 300-350 words, not including your header and any quotations.Structure always matters. I suggest this document consist of two paragraphs, one discussing the background of the topic and your interest in it and the second stating the main research question and discussing the other questions you will need to answer in order to resolve it.
