Human Services in Criminal Justice System Trends Evaluation
In the recent past, domestic violence has begun to be recognized as one of the biggest problems which the society faces. In history, domestic violence was viewed as acceptable, commonplace, and it was not even talked about. Children together with their mothers were considered to be property of their fathers or husbands. They held no legal stand and also lacked legal escape from the abuse and torture which they endured in silence. It was acceptable for a man to practice full control of his children and wife through acts of violence. However, in recent years, domestic violence has been recognized as a real issue and it is considered as a serious crime in almost all the countries in the world. Children together with women have been given a voice within the legal structure and help or safety can only be just a phone call away. The message to the victims has changed and the approach in how the situation is handled has undergone a drastic metamorphosis. The message to the abusers is no longer that this behavior is a sign of manhood but that it is a sign of weakness. Many people who in a position to help are stepping forward in order to assist the victims to the resources they require in improving their situation.
Recent and Contemporary Issues
Illegalizing domestic violence has been a very slow process. Even up to date, people are still struggling to put the issue under control and gain justice to everyone living with domestic violence. All too often, the victims are reluctant to report or follow through with the complaints. Domestic violence can be categorized in various forms such as; child abuse, intimate partner abuse, and elder abuse. A lot of reasons may contribute to one not coming out to report a case of domestic violence or follow through with the complaint. The common cause of this is fear. Individuals who are involved in any form of violent relationship or who in the past have experienced severe forms of violence are less likely to get involved or participate in surveys or even might not be willing to share their experiences due to their concern of safety, or their unresolved emotional trauma. Many of these people feel ashamed and alone due to what they are undergoing and this contributes to them not speaking out against the abusers. If the victims do not bring these issues to light, this will never be completely rectified. Programs which are aimed to intervene in such issues have been established. Medical practitioners have been adequately trained and made aware of domestic abuse signs together with the symptoms prompting them to question the people who they thing they are undergoing domestic violence. This gives the victims a safer environment where they can share what is happening as well as making them aware that they are not alone and they do not have to undergo such trauma alone.
The intimate partner abuse has been happening at a higher rate compared to all other forms of domestic violence, with the female gender being the common victims. A report given by the National Coalition against Domestic Violence shows that; in average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by their intimate partners in the United States alone. In a single year, this is equivalent to more than 10 million people. Statistics have further proved that 1 in every 3 women will be victims of some form of physical violence by their intimate partners and 1 win every 4 men will at some point in their lives become victims of domestic violence. Nationwide, the hotlines which are aimed to assist domestic violence victims receive over 20,000 calls every single day. Less than half, that is 34 percent of people, will seek medical attention for the injuries which have been inflicted by their intimate partners.
As the trend of domestic violence continue, despite all the efforts to curb the menace, alternative solutions are being realized. One of the emerging trends is that most of the state courts are starting to develop some special domestic violence courts. These specialized courts consolidate judges, court personnel, prosecutors, and other domestic violence resources into a single central system which is designed to facilitate a more effective response to domestic violence cases. The approach to the issue has addressed most of the issues which surround it, not only the abuse itself, but providing a more beneficial outcome to the victims. Having such types of problem solving courts which are solely focusing on these issues has helped in bringing into attention and acceptance of the matter to the public. This is extremely very important to the future of the criminal justice system because the more the awareness of the problem, together with the public accepting that this is an issue which requires to be addressed, the more the victims will become comfortable with coming forward and raising their voice. The intimate partner abuse has reportedly dropped with 64 percent between the years 1994 and 2010. All thanks to the public awareness campaigns, subsequent training of the police force and prosecutors to recognize the intimate partner violence as a crime, and the national legislation protecting the victims, rather than as a private matter. The message to the victims has changed to, they are not alone and they can seek help out there than the way it used to be.
