Creating an APA Essay Template: Formatting for Success
Those students who grew up with computer and keyboarding functions or have a special interest in the technology may wonder why so many have difficulty with this writing skill. If you are from my generation who grew up prior to the world of the computer, you may remember typing college papers on manual typewriters and carbon paper. We can commiserate having to learn word processing and formatting functions for college. It is necessary. Every one of those early papers took me twice as long as it should have because I was so poor at the computer. Smart phones and iPads are not adequate for the rigors of college. You are required to have an adequate computer (the catalog has the specifications) to be a GU student. It does not have to be an expensive, fancy computer, but you must have one. You should not be in this course without having your own computer that functions properly. Although I bought a Word for Dummies book decades ago, you do not have to. There are now an enormous array of helpful resources for you.

Thesis Statements: Mapping the Direction and Preparing the Way
The thesis statement is the most critical aspect of your paper. Why, you ask? Have you ever gotten into the car for a road trip without the slightest idea of where you were going, what you would do, or how long you would be gone? Probably not. Planning is essential for a great journey. Knowing where you are going dictates many things: how much money do I need, what should I pack, and what I will do there? If you asked me to join that mysterious car trip, most likely I would refuse.
Writing is much the same. Without a clear purpose for the point we are trying to make, how do we know what references to gather, how to organize the information, and how to engage the reader to read our work? The thesis statement provides the purpose for your ‘road trip’ and encourages the reader to take a front seat for a wonderful adventure.
The thesis statement establishes important information for the writer and the reader in the first paragraph:
What is the topic?
What is the claim?
What is the evidence to verify the claim?
Placing this information into the last sentence of the introduction becomes the purpose and the map for the contents of the writing.
A potential thesis statement for a simple essay on elder healthcare might look like this:
Quality healthcare for Medicare patients is reduced due to inadequate coverage of service expenses, decreased ability to pay for medications, and inconsistent healthcare delivery for all populations.
Now let’s break it down to see if this thesis statement is strong by presenting the topic, the claim, and three supporting facts to be discussed.
Quality healthcare for Medicare patients [the topic] [focused more narrowly for a simple paper] is reduced [the claim] due to inadequate coverage of service expenses , decreased ability to pay for medications , and inconsistent healthcare delivery for all populations  [three supporting facts].
These “facts” at this point are really assertions. The assertions become more factual (and less opinion) as you add scholarly citations and references. The more of these, the stronger your assertion is seen as factual.
Yes, it looks like we have a compelling purpose statement. Not only does this inform the reader, but it actually provides the outline for your paper right here! Nice! This is wonderful place to start, but as you go through your researched sources, you may find that you need to adjust the thesis statement somewhat. That’s okay. You have your initial map, and everyone knows where you are headed!

Benefits and Drawbacks of Divesting Fossil Fuel Company
The environmental issues is the main trend that is concerned by most of the organization worldwide. Those concerns spread through the activist group and are affecting financial sector as well. By pressurizing universities’ endowment fund to divest the fossil fuel companies, the activists urge for the funds to “invest responsibly” by moving their money out of the non-environmental friendly companies. They aim to indirectly create the new market norms and change the way people perceive those companies which will stigmatized them if they do not adapt to the more innovative and more sustainable ways of doing business. However, the fiduciary duty of the financial professionals is a big issue to be discussed if the fund manager will consider divesting fossil fuel companies on whether there is a conflict on investing responsibly and maximizing profit or not. By the definition of the fiduciary duty, Boatright (2008) explained that “A fiduciary duty may be defined as the duty of a person in a position of trust to act solely in the interest of the beneficiary, without gaining any material benefit except with the knowledge and consent of this person.” We may need to reinterpret its definition in accordance to the ongoing situation in order to see if we can add the environmental and sustainable elements to this duty without compromising the sole existing definition of the fiduciary duty itself. I have done research on the topics about this, and here are the advantages, disadvantages, and some discussion on the fiduciary duty on divesting from fossil fuel firms. Divesting from fossil fuel companies is likely to yield three main advantages. Firstly, it may encourage the change toward more innovative and sustainable form of fuel. There was a proverb stated that “The stone age did not end when we ran out of stones” this is to say that when we discover a better form of fossil fuel substitution, it will be no longer the main form of fuel for our world. For example, the development of alternative energy source. By divesting from those companies, we can stimulate them to intensify their research and development in order to move on to more sustainable fuel. After their successful adaptation, those stocks may become attractive for investing responsibly again and we may reinvest in their stocks. Secondly, according to Smith School’s Stranded Assets (2013), we can indirectly influence the market by changing their norms, which is the last stage the activists hope to archive, affecting their ability to finance themselves in both debt and equity. By doing this, all fossil fuel company in the sector will be affected by the wave created by norm changing. This will result in the same way as the first advantage, but on a lot bigger scale, because the market itself is the main force that can directly affect the stock price. Thirdly, the research by Hoepner and Schopohl (2016) shows that there are no difference in terms of risk and return between the portfolio that excluding some sectors of stocks and the traditional portfolio that does not has any constrains. However, the exclusion portfolio in this research only excludes the securities after they are accused of violating the code of ethics. This findings is a very solid reason for divesting fossil fuel companies, as many people believe that these firms can generate higher return for their portfolio. By getting indifferent return, people will be motivated to seek for abnormal return opportunities by moving their money to more innovative firms with higher growth potential. These advantages can benefit the university and the students by signaling to the whole nation that our university would like to take the leading role in tackling with global warming and other environmental issues. This can also potentially use for a marketing purpose of the university, as it may ranked the university up for being seriously concerned about environment and may attract more scholars and academics in this particular area to joining the university. The university may also benefit from the new investment perspective of its endowment fund, as it can gives higher profit if invest properly. This will enhance the ability to fund any new project which will definitely benefit both university and students, the university can provide better facility for learning and the students will be get a more competitive edge from learning in such environment. There are also three disadvantages for divesting from fossil fuel companies. Firstly, the university’s endowment fund cannot heavily affect the shares price of those firms due to the low proportion of the fund’s holding in this sector. The Stranded Assets by Smith School (2013) shows that the average university endowment fund in the USA hold the fossil fuel companies stocks for about 2% of their fund, and about 4% in the UK’s. This proportion cannot significantly affect the stock price even though the funds liquidate all of their portion. Moreover, there may be some players that are willing to immediately buy these stocks after the fund sold their shares, as the price will be attractive for that period of time. Therefore, the university cannot hope to directly impact the market trend solely on this activity. Secondly, such activity may incur additional transaction cost generated by this activity to the fund itself, which may decrease its profit for some period, especially for the University of Reading, which 12.7% of the endowment fund is invested in fossil fuel related companies. If the trustee of the fund could not find any attractive investment opportunity, this movement will do more harm than good, at least in short term, to the fund and the university. Thirdly, to see the significant effect of this divestment, we will have to be patience. The impact on the sector would not be observable within one or two years, the university is likely to suffer from the divestment, again if the fund managers could not find attractive investment alternatives. Moreover, there are no distinct lists of the targeted company that is not environmental responsible to divest, which means that this will increase the marginal cost for the fund to do the research on those fossil fuel companies to divest. I also believe that divestment is not a solution for climate change, as stated in the article “Why Fossil Fuel Divestment is a Misguiding Tactic” by The Guardian (2015) as this is can be only served as a mean for increasing people’s awareness about the issue and it can be considered only a symbolic act while the real threats to the climate such as deforestation, short-lived greenhouse gas, halocarbon are still exist. These disadvantages will affect the university in terms of the opportunity cost, which comes in the form of less financial supports, as the fund may not yield as what it used to provide. This may result in lower scholarship for students and lower capacity to fund the researches. I also believe that by divesting its holding in fossil fuel companies, the university also give up its right as the owner of the companies which means that the university cannot influence the companies to move into a more sustainable way that may eventually increase the benefits to the shareholders. For the issues about the fiduciary duty of the trustee, as I stated before, the trustee should aim to provide their beneficiary with highest benefit. Therefore, it should hope to maximize the profit of this endowment fund. I completely agree with Drew Faust’s Fossil Fuel Divestment Statement to the members of the Harvard Community (2013) on the topic that the university’s endowment fund has a single purpose, to support the academic mission, and it should not be used for any other purposes. To put the fund in any political position is to put the university in a risky position, as the money in the fund are from philanthropists with different view in politics. However, they share the same perspective in funding academic advancement, taking side in this political activity may result in fund withdrawal from the disagreed benefactors. I insist that fossil fuel divestment will breach the fiduciary duty of the endowment fund’s trustee, the fund must remain politically neutral to secure the risk position of the university and to serve the fund’s only single purpose. If the fund is going to divest, it should be a strategic adjustment of the portfolio in order to maximizing profit for the university, not for expressing the view on the particular topic in the society. On the other hand, I agree with the activists’ view about thinking long-term, not through the channel of divesting. Divestment is, in my opinion, meaningless as we still use the fossil fuel in our everyday life, such as our car petrol, our electricity which is produced by fossil fuel or even our home heating system powered by gas. We can act with long-term attitude by implementing a more productive ways such as influencing the current fossil fuel firms as a shareholder to move them to the good direction, fueling the breakthrough research about alternative energy and fuel, funding for innovative architecture and engineering. All of these ways can be originated from a good academic institution, their research, and proper funding is crucial for the growth of the academics. Hence, the trustee should put their best effort in the fund to keep advancing the academic goals. The campaigns should not about the fossil fuel alone, it should aim to tackle all of the problem stated above to be truly archive the solution to the environmental problems. I believe the conflict in fiduciary duty can be solved by the fund manager try to take part in the fossil fuel company that the fund invested in through voting rights and keep monitor their use of fund through the company’s report. The endowment fund should also keep looking for the new investment strategy which involve alternative energies and other responsible firm in a case that those companies could give higher yield than the current fossil fuel firm, then that would create a win-win situation for the fund, the university, and the students. The other good way is forming the new committee to keep reviewing if the fund invest sustainably and responsible, This committee may consist of students from the university and specialized fund manager. This method is already implemented by some leading American university such as Harvard. Finally, I recommend the University of Reading’s endowment fund not to divest for the stated reasons. I would suggest the fund to keep monitor the company, keep being aware of the situation in the market and use the recommendations stated above. While the environment issues are the important concerns for everyone, one should not focus only on the companies, but should focus also the people. People are the one responsible for the climate change and should be educated about the problem properly, in order to change their mind set to make it become more responsible for their selfish actions that caused climate change. I insist that the interest of the beneficiary is still remains an undisputed duty of the trustee and the fund managers must put their full effort to see it happen. References Andreas G. F. Rohinton Mistry is one among these writers. He is of Indian origin and belongs to Parsi community. Mistry developed as a significant and notable literary figure during the contemporary periods. He was an Indo-Canadian novelist and short story writer. He was born in 1952 in Bombay and immigrated to Canada in 1975. He studied English and Philosophy as a part-time scholar at the University of Toronto. His notable fictional works are Such a Long Journey (1991), A Fine Balance (1995), and Family Matter (2002) and non-fictions are Tales from Firozsha Baag (1987), Searching for Stevenson (1994), and The scream (2006). His works are intact with the major themes like religion, community, politics, human relationship, diaspora, alienation, nostalgia, and homelessness. Such a Long Journey His first novel, Such a Long Journey portrays the common lifestyle and anxieties of the Parsi community during post-Independent India, it also explores the social, political, and cultural chaos during the early sixties and seventies. The title of the novel, Such a Long Journey has been taken from the poem “The Journey of the magi” by T.S. Eliot. A cold coming we had of it, Just the worst time of the year For a journey, and such a long journey. (qtd in Mistry i) Eliot’s poem is extremely emblematic. The journey of the three wise man who wants to visit the birthplace of Jesus Christ undertakes a hazardous journey and overcome many problems and difficulties in life. Similarly, this novel is also symbolic representing the long journey of the Gustard Noble who overcomes many ups and downs in his life. The novel is set in Bombay against the milieu of the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971 which gave raise to new independent country, Bangladesh. It also deals with the major political issues like corruption, domination, and unlawful government. The novel has won many awards like Governor General’s Award, the commonwealth writers prize for the best manuscript and has also shortlisted for the Prestigious Booker Prize. Such a Long Journey is one of the remarkable and best works by Rohinton Mistry which portrays the realistic conditions and political history of the Indian society especially the life of the Parsi community before and after independence. Mistry has well studied the history, social and political condition of India during his stay in Bombay and has adapted it in the novel, which is interesting and traditionally significant. Jasbir Jain says that, Rohinton Mistry’s work raises a whole lot of other questions specifically related to the ‘homeland’ and political memory. Neither nostalgia nor memory in itself can account for this rootedness and preoccupation with the homeland and the environment boundaries of the city of birth. (qtd in Dhodiya 42) Such a Long Journey is an imaginative story which explores the life and anguish of the middle-class Parsi people. Amrijit Singh says, “Such a Long Journey is the story of Gustad Noble, the little man who holds on to his dignity, strength, and humanity in a sweltering tide of disappointment, confusion, betrayal and corruption” (214). The author describes the pitiable circumstances and the melancholic story of Gustad Noble, who is the protagonist of the novel. He belongs to the middle-class Parsi community, who worked as a clerk in a bank. Being a clerk, he has to face many problems in life. He was a dedicated family man, works very hard to uphold his family’s financial situation. Noble was a father of three children, elder son Sohrab, youngest son Darius and Roshan, his daughter. He lived in the Khodadad building with his family where most of the Parsis reside. Major Jimmy Bilimoria and Dinshawji are the faithful friends of him who also lived along with the Noble family in the Khodadad building. Parsi communities are shaken by the rise of Shiv Sena in Bombay, the party promises to give job for the middle-class people. The party is against the South Indian immigrants, typically immigrants from Tamil Nadu especially the job seekers. The party Shiv Sena in the novel is despised by the Parsi people as the supporters of the Shiv Sena ill-treated the individuals of the Parsi community as a “Parsi crow-eaters”. Furthermore offending the community’s funeral cremations, Dinshawji and Gustadare frightened that the Parsis might become “second-class citizens” in the future. Gustad says, “No future for minorities, with all these fascist Shiv Sena politics and Marathi language nonsense. It was going to be like the black people in America-twice as good as the white man to get half as much”(SLJ 7). The novel charmingly reveals the certain political conflicts which affected the life of ordinary middle-class people. Dr. Paymaster says, Our beloved country is a patient with disease at an advanced stage. Dressing the wound or sprinkling rose-water over it to hide the smell of decaying tissue is useless. Fine words and promises will not cure the patient. The decaying part must be removed. You see, the municipal corruption is merely the bad smell, which will disappear as soon as the decaying government at the Centre is removed. (SLJ 313) The above quote describes the present political condition of India. Government is the only root cause of all the troubles and problems which occurs in India. Such problematic people should be thrown out of the country. Gustad Noble’s hallucinations and ambitions are quite ambiguous. Many uncertain events have taken place in Noble’s life. Firstly, his friend Major Jimmy who is a gentleman and also philosopher to him, suddenly disappears from the Khodadad building. Secondly, his son Sohrab refuses to register as a scholar in IIT where he got the admission. Noble has a great hope for his son Sohrab’s future and wants to reclaim his family’s lost prosperity. But his dreams are spoiled and he loses his hope on him. Moreover, Sohrab’s unpleasant behavior during his sister’s birthday was unbelievable which shocked Noble and he wanted to know the reason behind his unacceptable behavior. Sohrab replies: “It’s not suddenly. I’m sick and tired of IIT, IIT, IIT all the time. I’m not interested in it, I’m not a jolly good fellow about it, and I’m not going there”. (SLJ 48) Sohrab discloses his wish to study Arts programme with his friends. Gustadwas unable to control his anger in front of his wife Dilnavaz, who herself was stumped, wants him to be quite. Noble says it is his obligation to look after his son’s future. Gustad fears that there is no life and occupation for the minorities in Bombay mainly due to unlawful government. Dinshawji reminds the good old days of the parsis: “What fun we used to haveâ€¦.parsis were the kings of banking in those days. Such respect we used to get. Now the whole atmosphere only has been spoiled. Ever since that Indira nationalized the banks”.(SLJ 38). Noble being an ordinary middle-class man had to face many trials in life. For example, the mysterious parcel which he had received from his friend Major Jimmy, slowly pulled him into a government deception including threats, corruption, and robbery which turns his life into a great tragedy. The mysterious parcel that contained ten lakh rupees invited a lot of trouble which puts him in addition to the existing problem. Moreover, the outside wall of the khodadad building that is considered as the ‘sacred wall’ and ‘security’ for his family is demolished by the government as a means of extending the road. These untoward incidents affects Noble so much that he feels frustrated and alienated. The wall is symbolic of the Parsi community. Once it is destroyed, Noble feels that the security of the Parsi community is under threat. Nilufer Bharucha says that “the wall both includes and excludes. It is protective as well as reductive. It protects theParsee community from the ingressof the engulfing Indian world. However, it also makes this world isolationist” (123). The problems multiplied when Noble found that his friend Major Jimmy Bilimoria was arrested. He is one of his close friends and also like a second father to Noble’s children. He utters about his difficulties and India’s political situation during the tenure of Indira Gandhi as the prime minister. Major Jimmy was instructed through the phone by the PM Indira Gandhi to withdraw the sum of 60 lakh rupees from the SBI bank on the emergency basis. Later, police found that it was illegal money and PM refuses to accept that she was directly involved in the money scandal. Major Jimmy was arrested and tortured by the police. He was imprisoned for four years. Finally, he becomes bedridden and died due to heart attack before the period of his imprisonment gets over. This pitiable condition of the Major in the novel is very painful. Mistry beautifully describes the sorrowful situation of the Parsi people through Major Jimmy: On the bed lay nothing more than a shadow. The shadow of the powerfully built army man who once lived in Khodadad building. His hairline had receded, and sunken cheeks made the bones jut sharp and grotesque. The regal handlebar mustache was no more. His eyes had disappeared within their sockets. The neck, what he could see of it, was as scrawny as poor behest Dinshawji’s while under the sheet there seemed barely a trace of those strong shoulders and deep chest which Gustard and Dilnavaz used to point out as a good example to their sons, reminding them always to walk erect, with chest out and stomach in, like Major Uncle. (SLJ 267) When Gustard returns from the funeral of Major Jimmy, Dilnavaz asks her son to speak to his father. But Sohrab refuses to speak to his father because he says to his mother about the father’s reaction towards him: it’s no use. I spoilt all his dreams, he is not interested in me anymore. (SLJ 321).The family is disintegrated due to politics. The distress of the Parsi community is well portrayed in Such a Long Journey. The inhabitants of Khodadad building represents the unity among the Parsi community. Mistry hints that when that wall is destroyed the community collapses. Mani Meitei notices that: though Mistry is highly imbued with an original writer’s imagination in the development of a flawless story in Such a Long Journey, his awareness of the contemporary social and political situation of India, particularly the period of the 1971 Indo-Pak war, is extremely exciting. As a realist, he wields the weapon of satire, which makes him a ruthless artist, a harsh political satirist and a devout critic of war. (9) Mistry portrays the agony of Parsi community during the reign of Indira Gandhi. The Parsi community stands as a marginalized minority community. Their sense of displacement is perfectly picturized by Mistry thus: “Tell me what happens to my life, Rubbed out, just like that? Tell me” (SLJ 74). Not only Gustad is affected but also the whole community which lives in the Khodadad building suffers. Gustad tries to bring in unity among the Hindus and the Parsis, but gets deeply hurt when the building collapses. His enthusiasm, thoughts, and desires was destroyed. Firstly, unexpected departure of major Billimoria from the Khodadad building. Secondly, his daughter Roshan’s illness, thirdly, Sohrab’s disloyalty and finally tragic death of his friends makes him to suffer more. In addition to this, the Khodadad building collapses. Mistry stoically says “it was becoming too much to bear, Roshan’s sickness, Jimmy’s treachery, Dinshawji stupidity, sohrab’s betrayal, nothing but worry and sorrow and disappointment piling up around him, walling him in, and threatening to crush him. Here’s what he said regarding leadership development: Was your development as a leader formal (structured such as a class or workshop), informal (unstructured such as everyday experiences, observations of what other leaders did or failed to do), or both? His development as a leader was both formal and informal. The moment one enters the military, at least in the U.S. Air Force, thats when one’s leadership development begins. The military branch also provides formal courses and schools dedicated toward teaching airmen leadership development. Did you pursue leadership development opportunities on your own, or did others present you with specific opportunities? He pursued opportunities as well as have them presented before him by others. Though, according to him, leadership responsibility in the military varies depending on rank. Were you mentored by another leader as part of your leadership development? What were the leadership insights you learned from the mentoring process? Mr. Johnson was mentored by many leaders during his time in the Air Force. He even became one such mentor for those who served under him. As captain, he was a sponsor for a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate who got out of pilot training named Kenneth Bibb. He taught him how to be noticed and how to present himself as a leader. Currently, Kenneth Bibb is a Major General commanding the 18th Air Force and is a recipient of the Legion of Merit. He also mentored a staff sergeant who served under him in Belgium. Through Mr. Johnson’s mentoring process, this airman managed to receive the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) of the Year for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa (USAFE). Currently, that individual is the chief master sergeant of the 3rd Air Force in Ramstein AFB, Germany. What would you change or add about the path of your own leadership development up to this point? He wish he had a mentor the way he mentored others in the Air Force. Had he received the same support, treatment, and mentorship he gave to those around him, he may have gone as far as those individuals or further. I worked with Putri for almost 10 years. Putri’s development as a leader came from both ends of the spectrum; structured – from attending different classes, workshops and seminars and unstructured – as many of her day to day experiences developed her as a leader. During her tenure, she was presented with leadership opportunities in her career field. Her mentor, our Human Resources Director, held such a high learning curve. Our mentor and leader observed that leadership was imbedded in her. As opportunities became available, she was a step ahead, hence, making her qualified for the next opportunity. Quarterly, she was asked to attend workshops and seminars and bi-annually, learn a different segment of Human Resources. As a part of her leadership development, she also had to mentor me in the path similar to hers. What she learned during this mentoring process was the ability to see different leadership traits. She named several leaders and knew which leadership traits they held. Looking back, she stated that she would not change a single thing from the opportunities or the experiences she had during her development as a leader. There were very many high points I discovered during our interview. I was able to point out that every person in our department were very similar in our leadership traits. I realized that we all were leaders and our mentor was able to point that out from the very beginning of our leadership development. We were set up for success and it seemed like we were a step ahead in the hospitality industry.
