Comparing Before Sunrise with Before Sunset admission essay help Language and Culture assignment help

Postmodern condition in cinema implies a deviation from the mean in terms of conventional narratives. Before Sunrise doesn’t end with both Jesse and Celine staying together in love. Sunrise ends on a cliffhanger leaving the audience caught in suspense with the desire to know if they both come back and meet six months later at the train station. Most of the conventional love stories end happily with the two lovers uniting.

Even Sunset does a great job in being unconventional in its ending where Jesse misses his plane to stay with Celine thus forcing the audience to ask questions such as, what is next for the two? The concept of “Generation X” traits makes reference to the generation of people born after the cold war era and is typically referred to as the Slacker generation. This reference comes from stats showing that males in this age classification earned less and worked less yet had a higher education background.

Members of this age classification reflect the philosophy of “working to live not living to work”. From the film one could tell that both characters were educated, through their dialogues. Another trait with high prevalence in Generation X is the individualism of the person. The ability to be self sufficient, ambitious, and adaptive to tolerate different lifestyles makes Generation X not only an interesting member to be but also an interesting generation to study.

In Before Sunset the audience sees Celine as a single woman in her thirties working to live, a typical portrayal of a Gen X female. Jesse in the sequel as well also contemplates divorce from his wife, which is again another gen X tendency. The film ends with Jesse acknowledging that he’s going to miss his flight, one cannot help but wonder if this means he is prepared to leave his wife back home in New York, or if he and Celine have a future together in store. One thing the audience can certainly appreciate from this film is the way ymbolism and analogies are used to eternalize love.

For example in Before Sunrise when Jesse introduces the concept of souls “OK, well this was my thought: 50,000 years ago, there are not even a million people on the planet. 10,000 years ago, there’s, like, two million people on the planet. Now there’s between five and six billion people on the planet, right? Now, if we all have our own, like, individual, unique soul, right, where do they all come from? You know, are modern souls only a fraction of the original souls?

Cause if they are, that represents a 5,000 to 1 split of each soul in the last 50,000 years, which is, like, a blip in the Earth’s time. You know, so at best we’re like these tiny fractions of people, you know, walking… I mean, is that why we’re so scattered? You know, is that why we’re all so specialized? ” In the context of the conversation of love I interpreted this quote alongside the belief that every individual has a soul mate. The idea of a soul and soul mate is arguably illogical however for the purposes of my argument lets assume it is logical much like Jesse did in his quote.

So Adam and Eve were soul mates but with the division of souls down through the generations I interpreted that Jesse and Celine fractions of the original soul mates fated to find one another eventually. With the immense human population your soul mate could be anyone. In fact 1 in every 5000 people could have a fraction of that eternal soul. Celine, I believe was a fraction of Jesse’s true love and through their conversations they developed a special bond. These two films are not your typical romance films because they offer a story the audience can relate to.

They’re not your typical fairy tale love stories; Jesse is certainly no prince charming by any means. He is your typical broken hearted average Joe traveling the Europe for his sense of purpose. Celine was not your typical princess looking to be saved either. She was independent in the sense that she traveled by herself, went to school, lived and worked by herself. Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, demonstrated a post modernist perspective in film, which digresses from the conventional Romance film.

Jesse and Celine are your prototypical Generation X members; throughout both films they display traits such as individualism and being progressive. The symbolism of love can be found through out the film as Jesse and Celine contemplate the existence of souls. This is evident in the application of the soul mates concept provided in the following paragraph. I truly enjoyed the way these films inspired me to think differently about love and life. For their story not to end in typical fashion I was left with the opportunity to wonder what was next. How is reality so different?
