Teamworking is not a “success story” for all companies

Business Communications Teamworking is not a “success story” for all companies.

Teamworking is not a “success story” for all companies after all !! A review of Knights-McCabe in Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered: The Meaning and Experience of Teamworking for Employees in An Automobile Company

Instructions:

A critical review of the essay. Critical thinking is one of the most important skills and abilities you need in studies, academic work as well as in your professional career. The purpose of this first assignment is for you to engage critically with academic studies, the kinds of sources you are supposed to be using in your assignments in general.

The aim is not to just summarise or reproduce the article under review in a short form, or critique the structure or the language of the text, but to examine what the article discusses and how it does so. Critiquing someone else’s work will help you become more reflective of your own writing and thinking as well as appreciate the work done by others.

Assignment 1 is to write a critical review of one of the three articles listed at the end of this document.

1. Full bibliographic information of all the sources used at the end under References. The reference(s) should be in Harvard style. In the main text, make clear what the article under review is. You can do this by giving your review a title and then referring to the article in the subtitle. For example: Scientific management never went away: A review of [Author]’s [Article title].

2. A brief summary of the article. (DO NOT just paraphrase the abstract of the article. The abstracts are seldom good summaries.)

– Summarize the main points the author discusses
– Identify what the author’s (main) argument is
This summary should be brief, a paragraph or two at the most. The aim of this section is to tell the reader what the article under review is about in general.
You can add details when you discuss the article further.

3. A detailed analysis of the article show that you have thought critically about its content. When assessing the article and the author(s)’s argument, you may wish to consider the following:

– How is the argument made? Is it clear? How it is put together? (Remember, an argument has three parts: a claim, a rationale and evidence/support.)
– Discuss the central argument, the main point of the article further, with more detail.
– Consider evidence the author relies on? How does the evidence support the central argument? What does the evidence allow, and not allow, to say?
– How does the author link the evidence with the claim they are putting forward?
– What does the author assume you already know? Does it seem reasonable to assume that? Who is the article for, what kind of audience?
– Are you persuaded by the argument? Why/why not? What in particular convinces you, gives you pause or makes you suspicious?
– Is the author’s position conventional? critical? controversial?
– What are the limitations of the argument or the approach adopted in the study?
– What does the study allow us now to do? What do we now know that we did not know before? (That is, what is the contribution of the study?)

Note that you WILL NOT be able to include all of these points in your 1000-word review essay. You need to make choices and FOCUS on some elements and make your text coherent. Remember, ‘critique’ does not mean finding fault in, let alone rubbishing the study in question. Critique is about critical reflection, assessment and contextualisation, that is, evaluating the strengths and limitations of the study. All published studies have these elements. Also, bear in mind that these studies have already gone through a rigorous peer review and they have been deemed to meet the publishing criteria of top journals. You will not find ‘easy’ mistakes in them.

For this assignment please select one or two companies that in the opinion of your group show that in the last three years they are examples of poor, good or improved practice. If it is practical and viable, you may also choose to do a comparative study where two organisations in one sector are used to demonstrate your analysis. In this case you are encouraged to address both good and bad practice. Please then provide: a) a detailed analysis of the characteristics and events that underpin your views.

Please support this viewpoint by using both company and external sources. (40%) b) your analysis of the lessons that can be learned and generally applied from the results of good or improving practices. (60%) And remember please that while you can use materials published by companies you should not rely on their unsupported assertions any more than you should rely on those of their critics. Your objective is to carry out a balanced and objective review. Suggested sources: o Company annual reports, publicity and web pages. o The Economist, Financial Times, on-line news services, company reports and websites, other business media.
