Describe two trends in broadcasting large scale events that would be applicable to Scotland 2028
BEST BUY Describe two trends in broadcasting large scale events that would be applicable to Scotland 2028.
Case study:
The cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, realising the changing nature of global events, have decided on an ambitious bid to host the 2028 Olympic Games. The cities realise they do not each have the facilities to host all the events and would want to work in partnership to ensure the event is viable. They also realise that traditionally one major city or capital hosts the event but they believe they can offer something new and exciting within the rules of the bidding process.
Olympics Scotland (OS) is the organisation which has been set-up to investigate the feasibility of the event, they would in turn be the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG). The first milestone is to secure partners to support the bid. After that, OS will need to convince the British Olympic Association (BOA). The primary bid needs to be in place by 2019 when the BOA has to decide which UK application to support if there are competing bids. If successful, a subsequent bid will be created for the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The final bid will take some time to complete and would eventually be submitted to the IOC in 2021.
The inspiration for this has come from the success of the Olympic Games London 2012; with its 10,500 athletes, 180,000 staff/contractors/volunteers, 300 medal events over 32 sports and the coinciding Cultural Olympiad. The cities feel that they are equipped to produce a world class event with the support of national and local government, associated national devolved public bodies, businesses and the media. It is also the case that Glasgow is seen as having a proven track record in producing mega sporting events of the calibre of the Olympic Games after the positive impact of the Commonwealth Games 2014, the International Athletics and the World Gymnastics Championship 2015.
Questions:
1. Discuss the reasons for central, devolved and local government involvement in the event (one reason for each), using examples of published strategies and previous sporting events to support your answer. (Extended response)
2. Compare the differing approaches taken by the governments of Scotland and England in respect of the Event Industry. (Restricted response)
3. Analyse with reference to at least one example, the influence and involvement the media plays in large scale sporting events. (Restricted response)
4. Describe two trends in broadcasting large scale events that would be applicable to Scotland 2028. (Restricted response)
5. Discuss two current online and subscription media trends that Olympic Scotland would have to consider when producing the games. (Extended response)
