The value of courage shows in many parts of the story such as when he has his attle with Grendel, when he faces Grendel’s mother, and when he battles his son, the dragon. One of the best quotes representing courage is when he says, “IVe never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in this tower dares to face me. ” Though he is old, weak, and not near in the condition he used to be, he chooses to face his demons and right his wrongs by slaying his son and saving the people he rules. As he begins the battle with Grendel’s mother, he yells, “Let my famous old sword stay in your hands: I shall shape glory with Hrunting, or death will hurry me from this earth! ” He is in no way afraid to die for what he is fghting for and makes it known by jumping into fghts without fear for his own safety. In the end while he was fighting alongside his companion, Wiglaf, “The old king is mortally wounded. ” He dies saving his people by courageously slaying the monster he created.

The last quote in the story, “And so Beowulfs followers rode, mourning their beloved leader, crying that no better king had ever lived, no prince so mild, no man so open to his people, so deserving of praise,” shows that even though his courageous attitude toward life go him killed, he got what he really desired. He lived his life meeting every challenge so fearlessly, and when he died he was remembered for his honor and bravery.
