She left a good career in the hotel industry to act on a long-held desire to be part of a charitable organization focusing on helping turtles on the Omani beaches. World has an obsession for fair skin. Unilever launched Fair & Lovely cream, which has subsequently spawned numerous whitening face cleansers, shower gels and even body lotions that claim to lighten the skin. The world’s whitening-cream market is worth over $432bn and growing at 18% per year. Last year, people reportedly consumed more skin-whitening products, than Coca-Cola.

Many celebrities regularly endorse these products. No one has taken a stance against the trend and said “Dark is Beautiful” which challenges the belief that success and beauty are determined by skin colour. People should be comfortable in their own skin and realize that there is more to life than skin colour. There is a long history behind the obsession with skin colour, owing to region and culture. These advertisements are very racist. It’s deeply ingrained. But there is so much pressure by peer groups, magazines, billboards and TV adverts that perpetuate this idea that fair is the ideal.
